We are a retired couple living in the French (Midi) Pyrenees about 1 hour from the border with Spain. We have a home 800m up the mountain which we share with our two dogs (a French adopted Pyreneen sheepdog (sheepdog NOT mountain dog) and a chocolate labrador) and two cats (a French adopted ginger Tom and an English moggy). We look to escape the harsher climate from January until end March approx (although the weather seems to be different each year!) and for a change of scenery at any time of year, preferably somewhere in Spain becuase we want to drive ourselves South in our 4x4 taking our dogs with us. However we are open to sitting for shorter periods without dogs(if we can get someone to sit our pets) in other areas We can leave our cats behind if we have to! We are fit and not used to just lazing around despite being retired. We walk and garden and whilst both of us are great respecters of whatever environment we are in, one of us in particular, is a brilliant handyman. We love all animals and here we are surrounded by cows, horses, wildboar, deer etc. We also would consider house swaps if anyone wants a change of scenery. We like all of nature, and are happy with mountains/countryside and sea. We can also provide references if neeeded and/or send pics of our home. However, lucky for us Mickey has excellent “grandparents” and would be fine visiting Grammy and Grandpa for a bit. We understand parents of pets can be very specific and we can appreciate that. Any specific instructions will be followed. Rest assured your pets are in caring and loving hands. We both prefer a pet-sitting house sitting situation, but are open to any sort of house sitting situation that may present itself. Unfortunately, neither of us have any experience with horses, pigs, etc. Both graduates of The University of New Hampshire, we are used to harsh cold climates (Tim loves to ski), but would love a warm winter escape (Emily loves the beach). We are a professional young-ish couple (33 & 43) with 2 quiet, well behaved boys (10 & 7). We love nature and animals of all shapes and sizes. We always have pets of our own (cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, fish, etc) and feel that a house isn’t a home without them. We will be having our pets babysat if we take on an assignment overseas though. We are honest and reliable and respectful of other people’s property, belongings and wishes. We own 2 houses of our own and know how we would expect others to care for them and therefore would do the same. My partner (of 17 years) has been a chef for nearly 30 years, and I am a catering manager / administrator. We both have backgrounds in rural areas and aren’t afraid of getting a bit dirty out in the garden, looking after farm animals, and performing general handyman jobs as required (yes, even I can change a tap washer!). I grew up on a self-sufficient farm in the far South West of Western Australia without power or phone, so isolation and rural life isn’t an issue. That’s not to say that I’m not lost without my phone and internet nowadays, but I love the country lifestyle. My husband has lived and worked in remote areas as well, and owned horses which may be of some benefit on certain assignments. We love the quiet life. Our children are adaptable and love the outdoors. They both like sports as well as reading, drawing and other artistic hobbies. In fact, give our eldest son a good book and a sunny spot to sit and he’ll be amused for hours! We are more than happy to look after pets, farm animals, gardens (pot plants, veggie patches etc), perform maintenance, house cleaning, and would also consider caretaking a B & B or boutique hotel, as our hospitality background lends itself to that. We would prefer a minimum of 6 months (but ideally a year or more if the right assignment comes along). We can be flexible though, and our dates are not set in stone.

Recently I found a nice place in the Dominican Republic for a winter holiday. But then thought - wait a minute, what about a dog or two to walk? A purring cat to stroke? Some eager animals at dinnertime? Petsitting has spoiled me. Top-notch references. After both my housesits in the last year (dogs, a cat, and a koi) the homeowners said I'm their best-ever pet/housesitter. I'm caring, calm, responsible, a homeowner and a gardener, and non smoker. I’m a fit and active wildlife specialist running a small conservation business in the UK. Because of the seasonal nature of my work and accommodation in the UK, and my long-term aim to move to France, I choose to spend time over the winter months increasing my knowledge of life in rural France and becoming more familiar with its rustic culture and diverse geography and wildlife. I speak reasonable French – not fluent - but sufficient to have had some great conversations with the locals and get invited over for an aperatif or two ! House-sitting has been a practical and enjoyable way of achieving this over the past three winters …… as several home-owners will testify. I have taken on some wonderful assignments, met many interesting characters and, hopefully, given a number of home-owners in France the satisfaction of knowing that their property (and occupants) have been well cared for while they’ve been away. I’ve been back to one gite three times in three years so I hope that says something ! I should be available from late November 2010 through until early March 2011 although this will be flexible. I would prefer a working assignment (property renovation, decorating or DIY, garden maintenance) but will also happily consider just home and/or pet(s)-sitting for the winter months. Rural remoteness is not a problem – in fact it’s probably preferred, especially if the geography and wildlife are interesting ! Transport-wise, I have my own small (French) van plus tools including strimmer and chainsaw if needed. Although I don’t charge for basic house-sitting/pet-minding etc., if any paid additional work (as above) is needed, I’m more than happy to help out and would only charge very basic rates (to be negotiated) as this would help me get through the winter. Previous assignments have included painting and decorating a whole gite (inside and out), dry-lining and re-tiling a bathroom, brush-cutting a walnut grove and various garden maintenance jobs (strimming, hedge-cutting, bramble-clearance and chain-sawing). I also raised two abandoned kittens when I worked on a ranch out in California. Two shy, traumatized litte meows came to be two friendly, cuddly, bold and beautiful cats. I have some experience with horses, sheep, chickens, donkeys, goats, and the general farm animal crowd as well. I'm not afraid of yardwork or gardening either!

It's true. Reliable, conscientious, huge animal lover, non-smoker, virtuous, honest, clean, neat, respectful. So what's the catch? I have a small beta-personality chihuahua mutt that travels with me. To her credit, she gets along very well with all animals, particularly cats (they essentially ignore her once they realize she's a wimp). And she's potty trained and does not destroy furniture.
