I'm looking for a mature couple or friends to live in my traditional house on the island of Syros, for the winter, while I'm travelling. Must be responsible and independant and since Greece is a summer destination, it's better if you have a 'project' such as writing or painting as nothing much happens on the island in the winter!
I run a cat care and neutering charity and have a colony of about twenty five cats who live outside around my house and about five house cats, so I'm seeking cat friendly people who will feed and look after them all. From time to time it's necessary to take them to the vet, and administer pills and spot-on treatments. But more important, the carers must be prepared to get to know the colony and be sympathetic to their requirements. In addition there is the usual care of the house, routine cleaning and outside plant care. If the sitters have DIY skills, there are always plenty of small projects around my house and grounds.
The house is situated in a traditionally Greek village by the sea, which has a good beach and a fishing harbour. hops, supermarkets, banks, a theatre, cinema, hospital and many bars and tavernas. The stone built house has three small bedrooms a dining room, TV snug and jasmine covered veranda. The shower room has solar hot water and a washing machine and there is a dishwasher, full size cooker and microwave in the kitchen. There are many books, games, jigsaws and dvds to keep you amused. There is also a laptop computer, printer, scanner and wi fi access. A walled garden provides a sheltered outside space for the many sunny but windy winter days. A few uneven steps lead down to the house, which is mostly on one level. There is a small mini market for bread and essentials, a couple of bars and tavernas that stay open all year within a few minutes walk. About three hundred residents live here all winter and there is a regular but infrequent bus service to the main town, about 11 kilometres away, which has a population of 25,000 and good facilities including a cinema, theatre, shops, bars, tavernas, hospital and banks. Syros is served by several daily ferries from Piraeus (Athens) and onwards to nearby islands. There is also an airport with a connection to Athens on six days a week.
You must be animal lovers and cat friendly. Winter in Greece can be cold, wet and windy, but there are also many warm sunny days when it's good to sit outside. The winter is a good time to explore the island - perfect if you enjoy coastal or hill walking. Greek islands are safe environments, the locals are friendly, free fresh vegetables arrive regularly and the troubles of Athens are a long way away. The house doesn't have central heating, there are electric and gas heaters and electric blankets. I will pay Internet and local phone calls, animal food and vetinary bills but will ask house-sitters to pay for gas, electricity, additional phone calls and water. Use of car would be negotiable.
