About this assignment

Hi there. Firstly, a little bit about us...... We are Sharon and Jason; a couple in our early fifties who are on our third renovation project in Spain.

Obviously you would have to understand that as this is a renovation project that things are definitely not perfect! However, the house is nice and comfortable The bathroom is has nearly been refurbished, and the installation of the pool is complete . The garden is a work in progress though June is obviously a way away and I´m hoping most of this will have been dealt with by then!

In June, we are going away to see family to celebrate my dad's 90th birthday.

At the start of October, we are going on holiday (1 week away from the area, returning to the house on 8th October for 1 night, then leaving again on the 9th for a few days in Madrid / return approx 11th October).

We need animal sitters (either a couple or an independent self sufficient person) to look after our animals - 3 dogs (one elderly), 1 cat and 4 chickens.

We ask that you arrive a few days early to get to know the animals and find out their routine.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE ANIMAL SITS, COULD YOU PLEASE SPECIFY IF YOU ARE INQUIRING ABOUT THE JUNE DATES OR THE OCTOBER DATES. Thank you.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Obviously we would ask that you are comfortable with big dogs and enjoy spending time with animals in general. Charlie is currently 14 and has 1 eye and arthritis but is a big fluff ball. Lola is 12 and looks scary (boxer / ridgeback cross) but is soppy and soft. Zeus is nearly 3 years old, a German Shepherd pup so is typically naughty and has a lot of energy. Petra is our 10 year old cat and wants attention when it suits her! The 4 chickens reside in a large complex so there is very little that needs to be done for them (aside from feeding and keeping water topped up).

Daily duties would be feeding the animals (basic medication for Charlie); poo pick up (sorry, but with 3 dogs it’s a necessity!); give the dogs a bit of exercise in the morning and evening (extra exercise on top of this especially for Zeus is always welcome in order to tire him out!)

We would also be very grateful if you were happy to keep the house clean for our return (or as clean as it can be being a renovation project!).

What are the good features of the property and location

It would be best if you have your own transport as we are fairly isolated and there is no public transport to speak of. The little village of La Hoya is a 10 minute walk away and a locally renowned restaurant is only a 5 minute walk away but it is only open in the day time. The outskirts of Elche are a 5 minute drive away, La Marina beach 15 minutes away, and other little surrounding towns just a little further than that. Unfortunately we cannot accept anyone who has their own animals as our cat would not be happy!

We do have a left hand drive manual car that someone over the age of 25 can possibly use (clean licence required) - to be discussed further if you feel you may want to take us up on this offer. We would ask that you´d be prepared to take us to and from Alicante airport though.

You would have your own bedroom and there's a good wifi connection. If you want excitement this may not be the place for you, but if you want to explore in the day time and then relax in the evening on the terrace and look at the stars then this may be the place for you.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

You would have to understand that as this is a renovation project that things are definitely not perfect! There is rubble and dirt and all the additional 'joys' that come with renovating! We don't have mod cons (like air con); the house has a more 'homey' feel to it. But we would obviously make things as clean and tidy as possible.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

Testimonials

Charlie, Lola, Zeus and Petra in the countryside

I immediately felt at ease with Sharon and Jason, and their 3 darling dogs and Petra the cat princess. Also Charlie, Lola and Zeus were at ease ánd respectful with me immediately and are very obedient and sweet. Petra took a bit more time to lay down next to me, as cats can be. Zeus is very exited when bringing the food, or going for a walk in the morning, he would jump around like an athlete, so amusing to see. I had a very peaceful time at their place in the campo. Close to the village and seaside, you will need a car. Sharon was always very responsive when a question came up and she had very detailed notes prepared, which was very helpful. It was my first sit with 3 big dogs, it went very very well! I loved throwing ball with Zeus. The house is small but very practical and has everything one could need. The best is that I made new friends! Both the animals and their owners! Thanks Sharon and Jason for your trust and warmth! Dominique, 2/2024

Splendid housesit

We have just had the pleasure of housesitting for Jason and Sharon, Zeus, Charlie, Lola, Petra the "Queen"! Not forgetting Jess and her adorable troupe of curious kittens. Casita where we stayed was fabulous, comfy and homely. Instructions as to how to feed all the animals was clear and no trouble. The use of the pool was a welcomed treat, yet the coast is 20 minutes away. The town of Delores is just up the road and everything you need is there. We were lucky to spend a number of great evenings with Jason and Sharon, great conversations over food and of course vino! We have certainly made friends and will keep in touch, updating them on our own journey through Spain and Portugal. Maureen and Noel

Perfect sitting opportunity

We recently had the great pleasure of sitting for Sharon and Jason at their home near Elche and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We were given clear instructions regarding facilities and care of the animals and the owners couldn't have been more helpful. The house is spacious and tidy and well equipped with a very comfortable veranda. The animals are an absolute joy and no trouble at all. They all have very sweet natures and are very quick to make friends with you! The house is only a few kilometers from the nearest town with ample facilities, including, bars, restaurants and supermarkets. The coast is also within easy reach. We have no hesitation in recommending this sitting opportunity to other house-sitters.

Beautiful Home and Orchard Near Alicante

My wife and I spent two weeks enthralled by the Alicante area of Spain. Jason and Sharon were wonderful home owners who welcomed us with open arms to their beautiful home and orchard. Charlie and Lola, the canine hosts, greeted us with wags and kisses. Petra and Tigre, the sister and brother kitties, were cuddly and happy to have us in their home. The chickens laid eggs everyday so breakfast was good. Sharon and Jason were very clear with instructions and communicated throughout with everything we needed to know to be effective house sitters. We took short trips everyday to areas of interest: beaches, mountains, castles, cultural areas, and especially old town Elche. Elche was in the festival season, so we spent three days watching parades and witnessing the very very extensive fireworks the last night. If you haven't seen the Elche fireworks display, it's the best we have ever seen anywhere. Sharon, Jason and the neighbors are wonderful people to know. We spent two evenings with the neighbors, enjoying snacks and beverages. Sharon, Jason and the neighbors gave us excellent advice on places of value to see in the region. We all enjoyed our time in Elche and would like to return some time. We want to keep contact with Jason and Sharon and see them again some time. Warren and Diane Poehler New Zealand

Great people, pets, and home!

We spent about 12 days on this assignment, including 2 days with Sharon and Jason after they returned from holiday. We used bikes and buses to get around. Elche is a charming small city not far away by bus. The dogs and cats are easy to take care of. They have a large fenced in garden to roam at will. Their home is comfortable with well equipped kitchen. We would do this assignment again, if in fall or spring. We are now Facebook friends.
