Mature dependable duo, content to live in fairly isolated area with extreme weather conditions. Used to, or willing to learn about alternative energy and the quirks of Spanish houses. Own car. Strong enough to start a generator. Kind enough to give a dog a cuddle. Available from end of July to take over from our current house sitters. We are also looking for possible relief house sitters we can call on in emergencies. Maybe you are considering a move to Spain or can work via the internet and would like a change of scenery. The house is for sale if you are looking to try before you buy! The sit is a minimum of two months.
Care of house, 2 outside cats ( 1 almost tame ferral and 1 nutty domestic) and one rescued dog - a boy who is in sometimes but prefers wandering the campo. One walk a day in the cool evenings is something he enjoys but not essential every day. Watering the garden weekly in high summer (we have very few plants but some are still young and need watering). Maintaining water and solar battery levels. Maintaining small pool and pump system. Painting and small DIY jobs only if you choose to be busy.
The views are amazing. See photos. Front views are to the distant Med and in winter you may see Africa. To the rear are the snow capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada dotted with the white washed villages of the Alpujarra. Splendid isolation but with good neighbours in (long) walking distance and towns of Cadiar and Albondón 10 minutes drive away in either direction. Amazing renovated and well insulated house with outbuildings set within almond groves and vines. Splash pool. Garden/harvest as much or as little as you like in 1 hectare of land. Sell a few almonds. Internet connected (25 euros each month - sitters usually just buy dog food for us). Mains water (non officially potable but we drink it in tea etc and cook with it) and massive storage tank, fosa septica, full solar power, bottled gas.
Mountain weather. Very hot and dry in Summer and sometimes very cold in winter with monsoon style rain and spectacular storms a few days a year. You will need your own transport due to the location. If you can climb a ladder, start a generator and build a fire, you'll be grand!
This was our first-time house sitting and it all came about very quickly. Alison's previous sitters had a change of plan and so she needed someone on relatively short notice. But we were keen and got to Spain in time for a hand-over. The house was large and well maintained, clean and in working order so we didn't have too much to do. The main chore was keeping the 3 dogs and 3 cats, later 4 cats, happy and healthy and ensuring the solar system was maintained. The house-sitters manual, which Alison had prepared, was very handy and as detailed as one would need and Alison was very quick to answer additional queries quickly via email or phone. We had no real problems whilst there. A visit to the vet and a bit of trimming and tidying the plot and the house. A great summer.
We had the absolute pleasure to house sit for Ali and Ian at their amazing cortijo in the stunning Alpujarras. The house is incredibly beautiful and cosy, with views to die for. You see the sea and the snowy mountains from the porch. There is as much or as little to do as you chose. The three dogs and three cats are the best animals one could ask for. Sweet and cuddly, but never demanding. Maintaining the solar and pool are very easy. There are instructions to follow that are very straightforward. Ali and Ian are excellent at answering any and all questions at all times. They are both extremely friendly and easy going and gave us the possibility to make it our home.
Jon and I have been the house-sitters here since April 2018. The three dogs are gentle, happy and healthy and have safe, free range of the landscape here. You can take a choice of any mountain track to off-lead walk them on. I have wandered for hours a day with them in secluded bliss with my camera and notepad. There is no traffic, livestock or neighbours to worry about - dog walking doesn’t get better than this. They are, however, lead and house trained and behave very well with other dogs and cats and are a breeze in social environments such as occasional trips to the vets. The cats have a fabulous environment in the workshop with their own access. All they require is feeding, watering and of course a good old back-rub when passing. The house is not just beautiful but fully functional and 100% equipped, located amid almond groves, vineyards, figs and other fruits. The solar power system is excellent with a back up generator for the occasional overcast day. Ian and Ali are kind and generous, extremely approachable, and prompt to respond to any queries or questions. There are helpful and friendly English speaking friends and neighbours dotted over the valleys close enough to help if ever needed, yet far enough away for your own seclusion if that’s your preference. A stunning, 15 minute drive downhill is the whitewashed town of Cadiar. It has a healthy mix of both Alpujarran and Ex-Pat residents with a few nice tapas bars, one English run bar and a supermarket. It is with a heavy heart we have to say goodbye in March and return to the UK. Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions/queries.
