This sit is ideal for someone/a couple who can manage and feel confident in a slightly more rustic and rural setting. If you like nature, this is the perfect sit for you :)
We have two dogs, two young cats who will be about 6 months in April, and a tiny flock of ducks. We also have a couple dozen house plants.
We're looking for an active person or couple, preferably with a good sense of the temperament and requirements of northern breeds. Our two dogs, Moro (6) and Juni (3), are husky/malamute mixes that are accustomed to having someone around. They're happiest when they get a good amount of exercise! We like to take them on daily neighborhood walks and a couple of hikes a week.
The cats playful, sweet and snuggly. They'll need to be fed 3x a day as they're still young.
The ducks are pretty easy as well, they will need to be fed and have their water freshened every morning and evening. *It will most likely be warm enough for us set their spring-fed pond back up, which flows continuously, into a french drain* We do the deep litter method and so adding hay/wood chips every couple of days is pretty easy. We also like to let them out a few times a week, but they come home on their own at dusk. One of the females is currently giving us an egg every day!
We are located on an acre at the end of a dirt road, in the quiet and lush forests of Vermont. There is a spring-fed stream flowing through the property. The house is an a-frame (ish) cabin with one bedroom and a guest room. We have everything you could need.
The surrounding area is full of hiking, beautiful roads to drive on, and plenty of quaint towns and farms. Brattleboro is about 15 minutes away, there's a cute downtown with shops, breweries, restaurants, and an amazing co-op. Keene, NH is about 40 minutes away, a lot of good restaurants and things to do there as well.
It will be spring, there is still a possibility of snow in April, but it's usually more mud-luscious and turning green! In the event of snow, our road is well-maintained during snow storms and we have a snowblower for the driveway (which is fairly short). The house is small and we heat it with a wood-stove, there is plenty of wood for you!
We spent a little over 2 weeks sitting Fern and Ben's happy collection of kittens, dogs, and ducks. Fern and Ben were lovely hosts and took care to make sure we had clear instructions, resources, and everything else we needed to feel welcome and comfortable in their home. The cabin is extremely cozy and easy to fall in love with! The snow and stove were easy to manage and the neighbors were all very kind. The kittens were cute little bundles of energy! Naturally they were a little rambunctious but had all the adorableness to match. We had a lot of fun playing and cuddling with them. Moro and Juni are beautiful, sweet dogs that are as fun as they are well-behaved. It's clear how much time, effort and love Fern and Ben have put into raising these dogs - and they are truly amazing! We totally fell in love with them. The ducks were also super cute, easy to take care of, and generous enough to give us eggs in the middle of winter! Overall, we highly recommend sitting for Fern and Ben. They are gracious, generous, fun and thoughtful people and we enjoyed their company very much. Brattleboro and Vermont is an awesome place to visit in the winter (or summer, we hear!). Lots of fun stuff to do and beautiful things to see; it's definitely worth the trip. We hope to see you two sometime again. Huge thank you for everything and best wishes!
