About this assignment

We are looking for a quiet, reliable sitter who will respect and enjoy our home, garden and animals and take good care of everything while we are away. We have 2 collies who will need to be walked every day.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

For this assignment our house sitters will care for our 2 Collies, Sky and Ted and also feed and water Merlin our cat and small bunch of bantams, chickens and ducks. The occasional bit of garden maintenance is always appreciated.

What are the good features of the property and location

We are in a beautiful, tranquil, rural location with all the walking you could want just out of the house. We have a couple of bikes that could be available. Craignee is a small, traditional cottage and we also have a a yurt in the garden which is fully equipped for a wonderful away-from-it-all experience. Depending on the time of year, our house sitters can help themselves to eggs from the birds and fruit and veg from the garden and polytunnel. We're only a mile from the village with a shop and community cafe. Thornhill nearby has a full range of shops, cafes and restaurants. The house is ideally placed for getting around the many interesting sights of Dumfries and Galloway.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

We are 1 1/2 miles from the nearest village and bus stop so you will need your own transport. But it’s a lovely peaceful location that isn’t remote. You will need to be happy walking 2 collies on leads - but the area is very quiet with unlimited walking straight out of the house.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

A wonderful, peaceful sit with friendly, loveable pets

Susan and Rob were wonderful hosts. Their communication before the sit was really clear and as soon as we arrived they made us feel welcome, made us a cuppa and showed us the ropes. Within minutes, the animals had warmed to us and we soon became firm friends. The house is situated in a beautiful rural area but not too far from a nearby town for amenities. This sit was probably the most peaceful and relaxing we have ever experienced. Sky and Ted are beautiful border collies, both very friendly, good on the lead and quiet around the house. The cats were very fun to have around, especially Meg who is a real character. Susan explained how to care for the ducks and chickens and we enjoyed the daily routines of egg collecting, feeding etc. Susan and Rob also kindly let us help ourselves to some fresh produce from their garden. All in all, this was a fantastic sit and we would highly recommend it.

Wonderful house-sit in Southern Scotland

The cottage is in a beautiful setting in Dumfriesshire a couple of miles up a single track road from Penpont that goes up in to the hills. Just sheep, birdsong and the Scaur River tumbling alongside down the valley. Susan and Rob were friendly, relaxed and ever helpful about anything to do with the cottage and locality. The Collies, Ted and Skye are charmers. They are eager to please and obedient to a whistle or call. They are also quite young and do need supervision, that is, to be on a lead with people or animals about. This is because of excitement, not aggression. There are endless amazing walks all around you can share with sheep or complete solitude, including Iron Age forts on either side of the river if you feel up to a climb. Cycling up the valley road too is peaceful and the views rate with any we have experienced in our house-sitting around Europe. May 2018 was wonderful weather, at times a little too hot for helping out in the garden and polytunnel. Also fantastic were omelettes from a mix of hen, bantam hen and ducks eggs. Not to forget cats Meg and Merlin the friendliest tabby you will ever meet. Add the lovely neighbours Renee and John into the mix and this is a house-sit you will really wow over.
