About this assignment

We are looking for a house/dog sitter who is going to focus on the upkeep of our home as well as enforce the rules we have set in place for our dogs-an "alpha." We are also seeking someone who will be mindful of our house plants that will need watering as well.

It might also be noted that our dogs are fed a raw-food diet (largely meat), so vegetarians and vegans, please be warned. You must be comfortable taking a 15 minute public boat into town to buy groceries and to run various other errands. Spanish is not required by our house sitter, but is highly recommended.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Responsibilities include cleaning and taking care our house, watering indoor and porch plants (we have gardeners for the rest of our yard), keeping our dogs off of our furniture (must be strictly enforced due to allergies), and implementing a raw-food diet for our dogs.

We have two dogs: Scout, an American Dingo who is 7 years old and Boo Radley, a Guatemalan mutt who is a one year old. Both Scout and Boo are very well behaved and they both have pretty funny personalities. Scout is older and a bit more human-like and Boo is an energetic b-o-y. They love to go on walks and swim. We love to take our dogs everywhere we go, and we hope this will be the same for you. You may leave them in the house for up to 6 hours, but this is not encouraged on a regular basis. Boo is crate-trained and Scout is good on her own.

Other than that, we just want to share our lovely home and location with you. Who knows, maybe you will fall in love with Lake Atitlán too.

What are the good features of the property and location

We live on the Lake Atitlán-a beautiful fresh water lake (water temperature at an awakening 72 degrees F/22 degrees C) that is surrounded by volcanoes. From our porch, you can see Volcán Tomilán and from the roof of our external bedroom, you can see all three volcanoes-Tolimán, Atitlán, & San Pedro. Hiking, kayaking, yoga, and scuba diving are all offered here in Santa Cruz and around the lake.

We live in a valley of Santa Cruz called Paxanax ("Posh-a-nosh") which is very secluded and quiet. There are about 15 other houses in our valley and two hotels where you can grab a bite to eat. We are also only a 15-20 minute walk from the center of Santa Cruz. Our unique house has two bedrooms and 1 1/2 baths and we do have hot showers and internet too!

We will pay the cost of rent, internet (maximum of one device), and all other utilities except for laundry which is charged by load (washer/dryer available).

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

We need someone who is highly committed to staying with our dogs for the duration of our absence. Please note that the location of our house is only accessible by boat and that there is a very steep walk up the path once you have landed on our dock. You will not need a car for this job. We also have harmless spiders and scorpions (it's rare to be stung, but if you are it's like a bee sting) that will occasionally pop up (spiders more than scorpions).

There are places to eat in Santa Cruz (hotels and a couple of restaurants), but there is no grocery store or market if you run out of something. If you are a smoker, please note that smoking is not allowed inside of our home. Lastly, if you are not a clean person by nature, this may not be the job for you.

Our dates are not set in stone, so please apply with flexibility in mind.
