I am looking for a responsible adventuresome couple to care for my lakeside property and my loving dog and cat. Knowledge of engines (water pumps, generator) is important as well as an avid interest in gardening. I would like to have the right couple stay at least 6 months. A working knowledge of Spanish is absolutely vital and experience living outside of the first world a must. This is an off the grid property with a large solar system and our own water system.
Taking care of gardens, supervising the local gardener, operating the water pump to fill water system and acting as host if the main house is rented. A percentage of the rent would be offered in exchange for extra responsibilities while hosting. A handyman type of person would be suitable. Someone who is capable of doing small repairs and adjustments if necessary, especially light plumbing.
The property is located on the shore of Lake Atitlan, a volcanic lake famous for its serene beauty. It is boat access only but just a 5 minute boat ride across the bay to Santiago, a traditional Guatemalan town. It is a gardener´s paradise with extensive flower beds throughout. The simple but fully equipped caretaker´s cottage has been completely remodeled and both houses have breathtaking views of the two inactive volcanoes and the town of Santiago across the bay.
We use a portable internet modem and have good signal.
You will be in an exotic, colorful environment. The Mayan traditions and dress are still honored in this area of Guatemala. A love of serenity and nature is also a must as the property is close to but not part of any other communities. I would expect the couple to be present on the property during the night and on days the gardener is not working except when we have made other arrangements. You must have a working knowledge of Spanish. And be capable and willing to take responsibility to oversee the systems and machines such as water pumps, motors, etc. The property is isolated but very close to civilization so you have to appreciate solitude. Your airfare would be your own responsibility. A $500 bond is required and will be held in trust and returned when you leave if there is no damage to the property or contents. References are appreciated.
Note that while the map points to Panajachel, the actual location is a half hour boat ride around the lake, across the bay from Santiago.
