About this sitter
We are two friends, Canadian citizens living part of the year in Sweden and part of the year in Australia (and sometimes home to Canada during the summer to see family). And sometimes housesitting around the world because we love the experiences we have when caretaking pets and homes. We have many excellent references and verified testimonials from previous sits, so please just ask.
Why they want to house sit
One of us is a university professor (science) and the other is a retired teacher. We travel a great deal for work, mostly for extended periods while conducting research in different laboratories around the world. We discovered housesitting as it seems like a great solution for people like ourselves who travel more than 6 months a year because we really prefer to live in a house rather than a hotel. We love pets, and are much happier coming home to take the dog for a walk or cuddle with the cat. Work related travel makes it impractical to have pets of our own, but we both love dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, horses and we can even take care of chameleons!
We do not smoke or drink, and prefer a quiet evening sharing the peace of your home with your pets. We are very security conscious and will always ensure that your property is protected. Our motto is to 'treat it like our own,' so you know you will come home to a clean, well-cared for house.
Their experience
We have experience and expertise in pet and farm animal care, as well as carpentry and building upkeep. We love gardening and will take good care of your plants, and can also handle most property maintenance problems as they arise. Karen is retired, so is keen to do pet and garden care, and loves to keep busy around the house. As people who have owned (and still own) houses ourselves, we understand what it is to keep up a property and leave it in excellent condition. We have owned both urban and rural properties, on the grid and off the grid, with alternative power, including generators, solar, wood stove heat, etc., so we are comfortable in just about any setting. We've taken care of several homes with swimming pools and are familiar with their care and maintenance.
One year in Norway while housesitting, we finished off a bathroom renovation, landscaped the property and repaired the bicycles and outbuildings. In Sweden, we planted the garden for the returning owners who were pleasantly surprised to come home to a blooming veggie patch. We have taken care of a sheep station in Western Australia, a ski chalet in Switzerland, a farm/nature reserve in Costa Rica and many other beautiful homes and estates in various parts of Europe, USA, New Zealand and Asia. We've taken care of all sorts of pets, including horses and bees. We love to take dogs out on walks and runs.

What can they bring to the assignment
Mostly when we are housesitting, Aly needs quiet time for writing and working on manuscripts, so our only requirement is good internet. One of us is generally home most of the day, and very happy to undertake projects and gardening as well as pet care.
We are both energetic, outdoor-loving people, who daily run, walk, swim, or bicycle, and enjoy exploring new places. Housesitting is a wonderful opportunity to experience a new place without being tourists.
We are happy to provide our many excellent references from previous housesits, we have never received anything less than 5* as sitters (and have completed more than 75 house sits over the past twelve years).

We had the absolute pleasure of having Alyssa and her husband stay in our home for 10 days while we were away—and we couldn’t have asked for better sitters! I cannot give Karen enough stars. From our first meet I knew she would be the perfect sitter. Excellent communication, house and garden care fantastic but most importantly she took amazing care of my old, anxious, deaf and blind with special needs dog - nothing bothered Karen. An excellent housesitter
Karen was an excellent housesitter who really went above and beyond, not just in the care she provided to our border collie - with far more frequent beach trips than we're able to provide - but also in the care she took for our plants and garden, working to rehabilitate some plants and the lawn.

Great house sitter!
Alyssa was a great house sitter. Easy, well organised communication beforehand, and a friendly 24hours or so together before we left. We came back to a clean and tidy house with no problems at all. Alyssa picked fruit in the garden for us, made us jam and froze a load more! She is a very experienced house sitter and we were very happy with the experience.

Organised, self sufficient, gets on with it and both the cat and dog loved her, especially Cindy who went on long walks every day. I can't recommend them enough
We have used friends and family over the past 20 years and having been let down on more than one occasion we decided to use complete strangers hence trying to find someone who we thought would tick all the boxes. Not only did they tick all the boxes they were absolutely outstanding in all that they did. Our house was immaculate,even better than I left it for them.They sent constant updates and pictures which really reassured us. Monkey (our dog)was having the time of his life and I'm sure he wasn't that excited to see us as he had to say goodbye to Karen and Aly. I can't recommend them enough they were perfect in every way

Wonderful pet sitters

Excellent housesitters
The summary is: Karen and Alyssa were excellent housesitters. We hadn't had a sitter for this long before (6 weeks), and being out of the country the whole time made it all the more important that we had trust that they would take care of our house and pets. The house was immaculate upon our return, and the pets were all great. They especially took great care of Stella, taking her on long walks every day and giving her lots of love. Their communication was excellent, they would send on updates and photos and respond to all of our emails quickly. Our old and failing cat, Milo, was well tended to, and Karen took up the task of giving him IV fluids three times a week, which was a big ask and an important job. And Karen put my garden to bed for the winter way better than I would have, something I greatly appreciated. We would highly recommend them for taking care of your house and pets, especially for a longer sit as we had.

You won't be disappointed
Aly was a thorough, thoughtful and caring pet and house sitter who graciously helped us out at very short notice, and for a very short sit, even though she was interstate at the time of our first contact, which meant we couldn't actually meet before our departure and her arrival. We are new to using Aussie House Sitters and so naturally we had some initial apprehensions. However, there has certainly not been any reason to doubt the process and quality of sitters that we have had the pleasure of inviting into our homes and trust with our pets and garden. Aly was a great communicator, seeking clarification when the situation called for it. She clearly gave ample attention to our two cats who I believe are still are looking for her. We can highly recommend Aly, you won't be disappointed.

We would be hard pressed to find a better housesitter than Karen. She treated our aging kitty like she was a princess with cozy sleeping arrangements, special treats, lots of interaction and daily grooming. She took fabulous care of our home and property through winter storms and blue skies. Everything was organized, neat and tidy when we returned home after four months away. Karen was a great communicator while we were away with frequent, lively updates. When we returned home, she had a hot meal waiting and stories of her stay in our small town. She's fun to talk with. I hope our paths cross again. Unfortunately Alyssa's employment situation changed, and we weren't able to meet her.

It will be very hard to find someone better than Alyssa as a sitter. VERY hard! So if you're reading this review and not sure if Alyssa is a good sitter, let me tell you this: she deserves all 5 stars and you'll be so lucky to have her. She stayed in our Santa Fe house for almost 4 weeks. She was fantastic with our dog, taking him for long hikes, walking him, making sure he was happy and healthy. Her long emails proving us detailed updates and pics, gave us a peace of mind from the start. Our house was immaculate when we returned and she even bought us some fruits and cooked for us. I can go on and on about the way she cared for our dog and our house. Dogo misses her already. Thank you Alyssa for being so wonderful!

We were very pleased with Karen and Aly. They were very good about communicating with us about what was happening at the home front while we were traveling, and that put us at ease. We knew Kevin and Buster were being well cared for because of their frequent and thorough descriptions about them and their behavior, and the photos they sent. Likewise, they let us know in detail about any problems that came up, such as a series of power outages that had been happening in our absence - more than usual. We worried about this because Aly needs the internet to work, and this was disruptive, even though there is a generator here. The genny is loud, and would have made communication on Zoom or Skype challenging, to say the least. Fortunately, they had cell phones with data that could be used when outages occurred - something we recommend to anyone who visits this area. Karen and Aly were eager to learn about the area, the wildlife here, and to simply experience the tropics in a way they hadn't before. They followed instructions to the letter (which is very important here), and took care of any issues when they came up. They weren't squeamish about the critters that routinely visit us, like the land crabs, or the tiny (and harmless) cat-eyed snake or the giant (and equally harmless) iguana we call the Garden Dragon. They didn't mind being awakened by our noisy howler monkeys, toucans, and parrots, either! They had the opportunity to experience some of the extreme weather of the tropical wet season while they were here, and enjoyed the storms. The tropical downpours are an amazing thing to see, along with the spectacular sunsets that follow! Karen is very handy around the house, and found several little projects to do to keep busy. She worked alongside our gardeners to keep the rainforest from completely taking over the property - a challenging task at this time of year! It helped that Karen and Aly speak Spanish and could communicate with them easily. They kept our place spotless and notified us of things they had noticed that needed attention when we returned. When we were due to return, they wrote a detailed list of things we needed to shop for on our way home, and we found this very helpful. We would recommend Aly and Karen, without hesitation, and would have them back if their schedule worked with ours and they wanted to experience this remote paradise again!

Rainforest farm Costa Rica sit
We have had many sitters over the years and never had people as excellent as Alyssa and Karen. Due to Covid we had not been able to look after the place ourselves much in the last year. Besides being really professional about housesitting and knowledgeable about animals, other culture's people, gardens, internet, and house maintenance- they made us feel like it was about as good as if we were there except they had all the fun! There were so many improvements made and I would trust them with any task. Their housesitting resume is almost intimidating and though they are both powerhouses, they turned out to be so sweet and kind and super easy going. No one before them has ever left EVERYTHING done. They kindly also helped me with a potential replacement when it was time to move on. We hope they will come back sometime!

I couldn't recommend them more highly
Aly and Karen spent nearly 3 months taking great care of my Oregon property. They were in communication as needed, and always available if I wanted to check in. They organized things, planted bulbs that are popping up now that I'm home, kept my home safe. I couldn't recommend them more highly. We became friends! Extremely happy
Karen and Alyssa looked after our house and dog Rocket for a month while we were overseas. They were fantastic house sitters and provided regular email updates while we were away. They faced a few challenges, including Rocket getting sick and a leaking watering system, but they managed to deal with it all with no problems and kept us up to date with everything. When we returned, the house was sparkling clean, the garden was in great condition (we even had a few additions) and Rocket was fit and well (possibly due to the extra-long walks with Karen). Overall we were extremely happy with Karen and Alyssa and would recommend them to anyone.

I hope she will come back again
Aly has just completed a month house sit for us in Vancouver and I cant recommend her highly enough. From our initial email contact, to talking on the phone, the flexibility allowed for our confirmation of flight dates and the time she would arrive on our departure day, she made the whole process efficient and effortless. Aly also grasped immediately how special Sparkle is to us, (especially after the recent loss of our other dog) and over the month we were away she sent us lovely emails updating us on how they were getting on and what adventures they were having together, something our children loved hearing about. We had no doubt Sparkle was in great hands. Upon our arrival back, the house was immaculate, a beautiful bunch of flowers awaited, milk and provisions in the fridge and a rather 'miffed' dog greeted us, one who has subsequently been sitting at the front door waiting for her friend to come back. She has clearly been treasured for the month we were away and we are so grateful to Aly for looking after her so well. A wonderful couple for minding your home!
Alyssa and Karen came to Ecuador to watch our home while we traveled.They were wonderful house sitters as well as a couple we enjoyed spending time with after our return. They kept in touch with us every few days during our month-long trip, made friends in town while we were gone, and the house was in perfect condition when we arrived back home. The garden, which can be unruly, was very well taken care of even at this time of year, which is our driest season. You would be wise to choose them to watch your home while you are away. Highly recommended
From the first communication via email and skype, during our trip, to the handing over of the house on the last day, communication with Alyssa and Karen was pleasant, smooth and reliable. We have quite a lot of pets, all with their own little quirks, and Karen and Alyssa took to them right away. It was obvious they have a great heart for pets and the dogs clearly missed them when they were gone! It was a relief to have peace of mind while travelling, in the knowledge that the house and pets were in good and dependable hands. They left the house and garden in a great and clean condition. We would not hesitate to highly recommend Alyssa and Karen for house- and petsitting!

I couldn't have found a better sitter
This was my first time having a home/cat sitter, and Aly made me feel very comfortable and confident of my choice to do so. My husband and I would have no problems at all recommending Alyssa and Karen as house sitters. They looked after our home, our gardens and our beloved pets, 3 dogs, better than we could of hoped for. Karen and Aly are capable and honest ladies who looked after our dog and house for eight weeks. The house and car were kept neat and tidy and the dog was well looked after and really enjoyed their stay with him. Would I have these ladies dog sit again? Definitely. Thank you Karen and Aly.

This was our first time and we were delighted to find Alyssa and Karen. We would give them a 5 star rating for everything. Our active border collie had regular walks and runs and probably much more outdoor fun than usual. Our cat was similarly happy. The house and garden were very well cared for and we felt that everything was safe and in good hands. Not only are Karen and Alyssa honest, responsible and trustworthy , they are both interesting and interested people - it was a real pleasure to get to know them. We would recommend them to anyone wanting to leave their house and pets in the safe and caring hands of two willing, helpful, honest and reliable people.
