About this sitter

We are both Chartered Accountants from Perth, Western Australia. Paul is semi-retired after selling his accountancy practice a few years ago and Joanna works online. We are both mature professional adults, non smokers, very clean and tidy people, love cooking, taking long walks and travelling.
From 2013 – 2017 we spent a lot of time travelling in Europe, especially Spain, Portugal and Malta. Paul’s family was originally from Malta, and he still has some family there, so sometimes we stay there and rent a house for 6 months. Joanna emigrated from the UK to Australia 10 years ago, and she still has her house in the UK, so we often go back there for a visit too.
We do not have too many family ties, Joanna’s family still live in the UK and she has no children. Paul has siblings in Perth Australia and 2 children, but they are grown up and busy with their own lives.
In May 2018 we decided to start housesitting because we wanted to see more of Australia. We are very glad that we did and over the course of 8 months we drove along the coast from Perth to Queensland and completed 10 house sits. We are now back in Europe for an extended stay and we’re waiting to see where this wonderful world of housesitting will take us!
We can both drive (manual and automatic cars), we hold full (and clean, with no endorsements) driving licences and we always obtain International Driving Licences before travelling overseas. Paul has a Maltese Passport, Joanna has UK passport and we both have Australian passports too.
We both have Western Australian police clearance certificates and are happy to provide these on request.
Paul can speak Maltese and Joanna knows the basics of Spanish and French. However, we have travelled to many different countries now, and have the translate App on our phones which always means we can get by.
We regularly check our phones and email messages. We have WhatsApp, Viber, Skype and email as our main contact methods.

Why they want to house sit

Before we signed up to a couple of different housesitting websites we did a few housesitting jobs for friends (in Australia and also Spain). This wet our appetite and we knew it was something we would love to do on a more long term basis.
With this in mind, we decided to start housesitting because it gives us greater opportunities to “live like a local” in different locations and explore areas we might not otherwise visit. Housesitting gives us the chance to experience living in many different environments, and have pets (even if only for the short term) that we cannot have ourselves whilst living our current lifestyle.
We never like to rush our travels (luckily we do not have to), and staying in any one particular location, whether that be a village, town or city for a few weeks, is the best experience anyone can get.

Although we have our own homes, they are rented out and we don’t have any commitments. This means we have the flexibility to be able to housesit, and put all our energy into offering a 5star service and take the best possible care of your homes and pets.
Whilst we love travelling, we really appreciate the home comforts of being able to cook, see some TV or relax into a lounge chair to read. We find gardening quite therapeutic and get a lot of joy from taking care of pets.
Since we both work from ‘home’ we can be around for your pets most of the time if they prefer to have company. We do like to go out to explore the local area, visit local towns and sightsee, but we will always check with you first about the lengths of time we can leave your pets alone.
Being accountants, we have looked after people’s finances for years. Finances are very precious to people, just like your home and pets. We have the mindset to take care of what is most precious to people, and we can be trusted to look after what is most precious to you.

Their experience

In order to be prepared for housesitting overseas, we decided to housesit whilst doing a road trip in our home country of Australia. We did 10 housesitting assignments which gave us a vast array of experience.
The houses and regions in Australia vary dramatically and we have looked after normal suburban homes, exclusive homes in Sydney, small duplexes / apartments and even a 90 acre property. There have been large gardens to care for, small yards, terraces and several pools. We’ve stayed in cities, small country towns, wine regions and houses backing onto the canals.
As for the pets, we’ve had the pleasure to care for:
Dogs…..large, ‘very large’, small, cautious, boisterous and some big softies. We have looked after 1, 2 and even 3 at a time. Some we have walked in forests and on beaches “off leash” and others have taken us for walk “on leash”!
Cats…… senior citizen cats, a beautiful Maine Coon, rescue cats, and the variety that just like to turn up and live you.
Fish (goldfish & tropical fish), an aviary of canaries & finches, rabbits, alpacas and even a worm farm.
We had experience in dispensing medication including ear drops, eye drops, oral tablet (via oral pill popper) and worming medication. We have also removed several ticks along the way.
We were lucky to be chosen from over 50+ applicants for a Christmas housesit in Sydney and from 100+ applicants for a housesit for a surgeon on the Sunshine Coast. Thankfully, they were very happy with their choice! We have completed housesits ranging from 1 – 6 weeks.
We are now in Europe and have completed 4 housesits so far throughout France and Switzerland. We will be travelling into Spain over the next few weeks to undertake housesits near Valencia and Almeria. We have been lucky enough to be able to use the owners cars whilst in Europe, and this has been a wonderful experience.
We find that once we have made contact, people feel more comfortable and at ease about letting us take care of their precious homes and pets. We like to explain our approach to housesitting and be methodical with the planning.
We only apply for assignments that we know we have the capability to complete to the full expectations of the owners. We love to housesit, and always do an assignment through choice, not necessity.
