We are a professional yet easy going Canadian couple (late 30s/early 40s) - community oriented with a passion for experiencing world cultures. We are also homebodies. We love spending quiet time tending a garden or cooking a nice dinner for two or snuggling with your pets. We have travelled and cared for homes and pets across Canada, USA, SE Asia and in Guatemala.
Ben: As a professional in the travel industry, I've lived and worked in 4 continents, and am extremely adaptable. Whether it's caring for your urban condo or aging farm, working with local staff in Spanish, or taking care of emergencies, I've done it all.
Lindsey: Growing up in the country, I spent most of my time outdoors with our horses, dogs and cats. Though I love the city and have been an urban dweller working in arts and events for the last decade, I also love to be away from it all and welcome the quiet of a rural lifestyle.
Together we bring international, household maintenance and trusted pet-care experience. Combined we've travelled to 70+ countries.
In addition to our mother tongue English, we speak Spanish and some French as well.
We are handy and know how to troubleshoot and take care of issues that can arise in both urban and rural settings. Together we own and manage multiple properties in Canada, and are quite handy and have experience with home repairs, construction, and of course dealing with issues as they come up.
We are currently looking for house sitting opportunities in Central America in the Jan to mid March 2020 period, and in Eastern Canada/USA in Nov/Dec 2019. For our Central American stay, proximity to nature is key, and though we love animals, they are not a must.
We are not hotel people, and we are long past our days of wanting to move quickly when we travel, but prefer to live and be in one place. We prefer the home environment, and housesitting affords us the opportunity to fully experience the communities we travel to - to meet people, and create meaningful connections with that place.
In addition, we grew up with and adore the companionship of pets, but don't have any of our own. Taking care of yours would be our pleasure.
We have lots of experience house sitting, from weekend stays nearby in Toronto for neighbours, friends and family, to lengthier housesits in Thailand and Singapore across several months in 2013. Our longest and most enjoyable house sitting experience was looking after an off-grid property for 8 months in 2014, in Lago Atitlan, Guatemala. Nestled on the side of San Pedro volcano, the property was perfect for us, as we wanted try out off-grid living. There, we managed the 2 houses on the property, loved and cared for the 3 dogs and 1 cat, managed the solar and complicated water systems, hosted guests who rented the property through short term online rental sites, supervised the local gardener, and were troubleshooters/jacks-of-all-trades on this 2 acre property.
Outside of housesitting specifically, much of our past experience applies to help us be great caretakers. Having grown up with pets of all sizes, we have a great rapport with the pets we care for. Whether it's going for a jog with a large energetic dog, or snuggling with a timid cat, we always strive to make a personal connection with your pets so they don't miss you too much!
Lindsey: I also have 7 years experience caring for a cat with renal failure. Through subcutaneous fluids and potassium supplements, Kitty was able to live a happy and comfortable life. Pets aren't just animals in the house, they're family... we understand that.
As multiple property owners and landlords, we are used to caring for and dealing with the small and large issues that sometimes arise with homeownership.
Working in international settings has given us years of experience in dealing with local staff, so connect with people even when there is a cultural or language barrier.
In thinking about our most notable and relevant qualities to housesitting, these stand out:
- honest, responsible, accountable, and fair
- homeowners and property managers ourselves
- adaptable and enjoy challenges
- experienced handy-people
- English, fluent Spanish, intermediate French
- respectful and caring
And finally, we're just neat and tidy people who take pride in our home and will treat your home with that same respect. We strongly believe in and live by the golden rule.
