Hello, I'm Nikolai! I am originally from Germany and I'm an outdoor lover: I have a lot of experience hiking and in my day-to-day work, I build machine learning models for birdsong identification. I’m a solo sitter and enjoy morning runs, meditation, and exploring new neighborhoods at a slow, local pace. I love longer sits (one week or more) so I can settle in and give pets a consistent routine, but I’m also very open to shorter assignments if I can fit them into my travel route. :)

Why they want to house sit

At the moment, I work remotely which gives me the freedom to live and work wherever I want, and so I often travel. What I miss, though, is caring for pets. I genuinely love the routine, the presence, and the companionship they bring. House sitting is my way of combining the freedom of remote work with the joy of looking after animals and maintaining a cozy, cared-for home.

In the past, I stayed in Airbnbs while traveling, but I often found them impersonal, and I became increasingly uncomfortable with their impact on local housing markets. That made me ask: how can I travel in a slower, more mindful way that contributes rather than takes?

When I discovered house sitting, it felt like the perfect fit. It allows me to settle into a place with purpose and care, while offering peace of mind and presence in return.

Their experience

In my youth, I had numerous rabbits during a period of over 10 years who lived in a large outdoor enclosure I constructed for them in the garden. They would also be allowed to roam in the garden during the day and it was always a great joy to see them enjoying life from the distance, or have them tug at my pants when they knew I was carrying a tasty treat. Over all these years, I really came to understand pets and the gentleness and attention to detail they require.

What can they bring to the assignment

I work from my laptop and have very flexible work hours, so I can easily adjust to the schedule and needs of pets or house maintenance throughout the day. I'm naturally an early bird, so watering plants or taking care of pets early in the morning aligns perfectly with my daily rhythm - I love the feeling of getting up early with a sense of purpose! :) Some of my rabbits had health problems, so I am used to administering medicine and I have learned to pay close attention to even subtle shifts in behavior of pets. I'm also very tech-savy and good with my hands (I built a complex enclosure for my rabbits from scratch once), so I'm also happy to handle any cleaning or practical maintenance tasks.
