About this sitter

We met 18 years ago while volunteering in Chile. Rich is from England and Melissa is from the USA. During our 6 months together in Chile, Rich had shared that he wanted to homeschool his future kids and travel with them to teach them about the world, Melissa was on board with the plan.

We have traveled with our kids since they were young as Rich worked for an organization based in Uganda; we have additionally been to Iceland, Egypt, and various places throughout the USA.

While traveling, animals, meeting new people and learning about other customs and cultures, trying new foods and experiences and doing it all together are the highlights.

We have just started our worldschooling journey and are looking forward to slowly moving around and making the most of opportunities that come our way.

Sophie is 11 years old and loves reading, cooking, learning about history, and making crafts with nature. Sophie wants to be an Egyptologist.

Emma is 8 and loves all animals, playing outside, drawing, baking and Pokémon. Emma wants to work for NASA when she is older.

Melissa is a licensed clinical Social Worker and worked as a mental health therapist prior to choosing to stay home and raise the girls. In the last 11 years she has been a Girl Scout leader, soccer coach, Sunday school teacher and superintendent, played in a handball choir, and an active member in homeschool cooperatives. When the girls were young, Melissa began working on an organic vegetable farm and the girls would be there too. When the farm closed we built a large garden with 3 other families, growing food for our families.

Rich has a masters degree in Sustainable International Development. He has run programs and worked for organizations in Uganda and Haiti. Most recently he ran a furniture bank in Massachusetts, connecting people coming out of homelessness with the items needed to turn an empty space into a home.

We have owned a home in Marlborough, Massachusetts for 13 years. Before setting off to travel full-time, we put in a new kitchen and bathroom, and updated all of the rooms ourselves, the girls helped too. We love working together to complete projects, which has helped to develop a deep respect for caring for people's spaces.

Why they want to house sit

We want to house and pet sit for others because we understand the importance of having your home and animals within it cared for in the same way you would. House and pet sitting also allows us to continue to travel on a small budget while feeding our love of animals.

Their experience

Over the past seven months, we’ve completed eight house-sits and two WWOOFing placements, gaining hands-on experience across a variety of settings. Our work has included caring for horses, goats, pigs, sheep (including during lambing season), dogs, cats, and other animals. This range of experience has made us adaptable, dependable, and confident in managing the diverse needs of both homes and animals.

What can they bring to the assignment

We bring a strong work ethic, reliability, and a genuine love for animals and rural living. With over seven months of hands-on experience across eight house-sits and two WWOOFing stays, we are confident in our ability to handle a wide range of responsibilities—including animal care (horses, livestock, pets), property upkeep, and garden or farm work. We’re respectful of the homes and communities we stay in, quick to learn routines, and committed to leaving each place better than we found it. You can count on us to care for your animals and property with the same attention we’d give our own
