About this sitter

Hello, I’m Kevin, a retired Australian originally from country Victoria. My home base is currently Tangier, Morocco, which makes it easier to explore Europe and beyond. I travel on my own and welcome house-sitting opportunities with or without pets.

My varied working life has included being an English teacher, social worker, bed-and-breakfast owner, café and gallery proprietor, and finally a registered mental health practitioner. These experiences have shaped my patience, compassion and practical approach to caring for people, homes and animals.

I’m currently in Rome and available to travel to Sicily or elsewhere in southern Italy at short notice, for sits lasting up to one month. Sicily is my first preference.

Why they want to house sit

Now retired, I’m looking forward to combining my love of travel with something I’ve always treasured: the companionship of animals. There’s something special about those everyday moments—a walk, a little play or simply sitting together.

House sitting gives me the chance to get to know a place at a slower pace while offering pet owners the reassurance that their animals and home are being cared for with warmth and respect. Having entrusted my own pets and home to others, I understand the peace of mind that makes it possible to enjoy time away.

Their experience

Pets have been part of my life since childhood and were much-loved members of our family as my daughters grew up. My eldest daughter is now 38, so caring for animals has been a thread running through many decades of my life.

Our family dogs have included Gypsy, a Labrador Retriever; Nelson and Rose, two Staffordshire Bull Terriers (Staffies); and Poppy, a Shih Tzu. We also shared our home with two domestic shorthair cats (moggies): Ruby, my eldest daughter’s cat, and Jess, my own rescue cat. My most recent pets are two rosy-faced lovebirds (small parrots). My family and I have cared for other people’s pets too.

As a former bed-and-breakfast owner and keen gardener with experience renovating houses, I also understand the care a home needs.

What can they bring to the assignment

I understand that pets are family, and leaving them in someone else’s care is an act of trust. I would take time to understand their personalities, follow your instructions and respect their familiar routines. Whether they need affection, play, quiet company or a little space, I would want them to feel safe, comfortable and loved while you’re away.

I take pride in keeping a home clean, tidy and well cared for. I notice small maintenance issues before they become bigger problems and would report anything needing attention, following your instructions, including contacting your preferred tradesperson. I would never undertake repairs or arrange work without your permission.

Two referees, based in the UK and Italy, shared accommodation with me while we were volunteering. They can speak to my reliability, cleanliness, trustworthiness and consideration for others.
