Hello home-owners! My name is Brian and I am a 34 year old animal lover with a B.A. in History of Art & Architecture and English Literature from the University of Pittsburgh.
My girlfriend, Berry, is a 36 year old animal lover with a degree in Studio Arts and International Communication from Allegheny College. She is a muralist, and a musician.
We live together in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in modest brick home that we're currently (and continuously) renovating. We live here with our twelve year old calico cat named Kitty whom we spoil with attention, affection, and cat-nip.
We are non-smokers with tenacious desires for travel, and equal likings for literature, libraries, and the arts.
We are quite people, often preferring to keep to ourselves, our books, drawings and writings. We both play the guitar as well, but exclusively soft, acoustic, folk-like music.
We are cat lovers to put it simply. I grew up around cats & kittens (indoor and outdoor both), litter-boxes, wet and dry food, cat nip, etc. Throughout my childhood my family kept an average of 4 cats around the house at a time, so I feel quite akin to them in general. (Somewhat embarrassingly, I have a small, line-drawing tattoo on my arm that confesses my affinity for the animal). Berry very much the same grew up around a variety of cats and dogs.
I also grew up around two large and energetic Dalmatian dogs (Farley and Darby) and a girl Golden Retriever (Teddy). They also were great friends over the years, and ones who kept me physically active all the while.
Primarily, we would like to continue careers as a reliable and trustworthy house-sitters, as a way to travel the world creatively and responsibly. We would like opportunities to get out of Pittsburgh and to surround ourselves with new sights and sensations, climates and street names.
We are open to most any house-sitting opportunities, but would prefer those that are for longer stays--those that will allow us to be settled in a place long enough to thoroughly get to know the area and its habits, ways and weathers...long enough to read and write regularly and productively.
Having grown up in a military family, I moved from town to town throughout my entire childhood and as a result, I have been given a strong inclination to travel.
Therefore, we would like to offer our services in exchange for a little time to be away in new and quiet places. And what could be better that being able to do so in the company of animals?!
We do have experience taking care of homes and animals...
I've cared for dogs and cats most routinely, however I was also responsible for the care of 5 chickens during a 3 montb house-sitting position in southern France, along with a gentleman of a cat named Francis. During this stay I mowed the lawn of the estate, kept care of the many house-plants, cleaned the chicken coop on the weekly basis, and kept in regular contact with the home-owners (who are delightful people and if they had not sold their home shortly after my time there I would certainly have returned).
A few autumns back, I spent 3 months in central Idaho keeping care of a lovely home and its two cats (Tiny and Peanut) while the home-owners were off cycling around Eastern Europe . There was no internet connection in the home, which was entirely suitable to me, but there was a wonderful library in town in which I was fortunate enough to be able to indulge so I had plenty of books to keep me company during the autumn and winter.
And over the autumn of 2011 I spent another 2.5 months house-sitting a beautiful home in Southern France. During this post, I cared for 4 large and loving dogs, and 10 cats (of every variety!). There was a degree of responsibility in dealing with this many animals, but they were all great friends to me, and I was still allowed a good deal of time to myself to read and write, and to explore the surrounding French countryside--which is spectacular if I might say. The family for which I house-sat was great--very understanding and generous in their want to make me comfortable during my stay, and as a result, we developed a nice rapport over our time working together.
Directly from France I made my way to Southwestern England, where I spent 2.5 winter months keeping watch of a cozy home and one sweet elderly cat. Situated in a small town, I was given the pleasure of getting to know the ins and outs of a market-town's amenities, as well as the surrounding pastoral settings. Here, again with access to the town library, I was able to read the winter through in the company of Madonna, the pleasant cat of the house. And while he was away, the home-owner and I maintained regular correspondence to keep us both informed about house and personal issues pertinent to the situation.
I have three times house-sat here in Pittsburgh (and I I've just agreed to do so a fourth time later this summer...!) for a young couple, and tended to their home and their two sweet Pommeranians (also arranged through mindmyhouse).
Berry and I have taken care of ill cats that have required extra/medical attention. We've been witness to multiple cat-pregnancies and helped rear kittens on the occasions.
We house sat this past summer in New Orleans, LA for a lovely couple, and watch over their home and collection of cute cats and dogs.
With years of homeowner experience, we can be sympathetic to the anxieties associated with leaving a home while traveling. We promise to care for your property as though it were our own. We are not afraid to work or to get dirty doing so, on home repairs or otherwise. We can tend to yards and gardens (Berry keeps a lovely herb and vegetable garden at the front of our home) and we have plenty of experience with tools and can fix basic household problems.
We can offer house-sitting and work-related references to attest to my respectability and reliability. We are financially responsible. We each have a valid driver's license. We are both avid bicyclists and maintain my own bicycles for transportation purposes.
We're not so particular about location...because my father was in the military and we moved as a family all over the United States, I easily adapt to new and various living situations, and love doing so in fact.
We both lived and studied abroad during University, (myself in Japan, Berry in Germany). A few years back I walked the entirety of the Appalachian Trail, so having to walk a distance to a store for grocery supplies is no problem at all!
We have traveled here and there internationally (Iceland, Ireland, England, Canada, the Bahamas, etc.) and have a great desire to travel more. I are excited for any climate (cold winters included)!
Thanks for your time!

Came back to a clean house and happy, well fed pets. Brian and his wife Berry are friendly and reliable. I would gladly have them house sit for me again.
