Top 100 Sitter Wanted listings – from the Archives

Here are 100 of our most interesting (in our opinion) sitter wanted listings.

Please note that these listings are in our database but they are not currently live on our website. Thus, you can’t contact any of these home owners until they choose to switch their listing to the ‘show’ mode when they next need to look for a house sitter. Sorry about that! The length of the assignments given are approximate only. These listings have been edited for punctuation and spelling, otherwise, they are presented the same as when written by each home owner’s fair hand!

Now that we are charging a small fee for annual house sitter memberships (from March 2008), we will be taking our service to the next level. Create your own alert for assignments in ‘all countries’ and see what we mean. Expect lots more listings as enticing as you see here!

1. Three Months in The Dominican Republic

Looking for a mature couple, with some practical abilities (we live in a solar powered house). You will find relative quietness (a luxury in the DR!) here and a beautiful surrounding landscape. The house is inside of a farm 500m from the farm workers house and 1km from the farm office. We have various tropical fruit trees, milk, eggs. Library, classical CDs, piano, TV for CD and VCR (No TV reception). Small swimming pool, 15km to nearest beach, 8km to mid-size town. Should enjoy living in a relatively isolated farm setting, a poor rural environment, there are no tourist amenities nearby. Some basic Spanish knowledge would be desirable.

Louie, the maine coon cat needs someone to look after him for a week in the Loire valley. Mature person(s) who likes cats and dogs and is happy to water the plants if needed. Need to be dependable and resourceful. We have two dogs, Rosé the Labrador, still quite boisterous at two years and Charlie Brown a small yorkie who looks more like a miniature Griffin and can be quite biddable. They are coming with us in September and October for our week away. That leaves Louis, the maine coon tabby cat who is supposed to be a great hunter, but rarely gets up from his sleep and naps. He needs feeding, changing his water, especially as he washes his paws in the water bowl and a general comb; which he likes. Lock up the house if not there and at night. Keep it clean and tidy and clean pool if it’s open, weather permitting. Water plants as necessary. House is over 200 years old, built in tuffeau stone situated in working village minutes away by car to Chinon. Situated in private gardens and heated swimming pool in summer, so not always open. 5. Eight Days in Somerset, England

Cosy cottage in pretty Somerset village. I am looking for a reliable, honest, responsible, cat-loving sitter to care for and enjoy my two cats and comfortable cottage from the 9th to 17th April. My cats are both ex-rescue and need to feel safe, secure and cared for, so you would need to give them plenty of love and attention. They are used to having someone around most of the time so ideally you would be too and certainly every night. The house is fairly easy maintenance so would just require the usual upkeep. The most important thing is that you respect my home and give my animals the love and care they need. The cottage is comfortable, warm and nicely furnished with lots of character and a lovely, large(ish) garden (which you wouldn't be expected to maintain). The village is attractive and very friendly and there is beautiful countryside and good walking all around. Bath and Bristol are less than an hour away and there's plenty of culture locally too. This assignment would suit one person or a couple. Non-smoker/s and non-meat-eater/s please, or you would ideally be happy to forgo these while in my home. The village is quiet with no pub, shop or even street lighting, but it's perfect if you are looking for peace and tranquillity for creative work, or just value them for their own sake. There are lots of changes of level in the house and the staircase is fairly steep and narrow so you would need to be able to manage these. If you think this could be for you I'd love to hear from you.

6. One Year Plus in Amsterdam, Netherlands

A comfortable modern home, close to Amsterdam, pet care and some human companionship are the main requirements! Someone who is interested in learning about other lifestyles, willing to take responsibility for themselves and their environment and looking for a long term - one year plus arrangement. A sense of humour, experience with animals, enjoys occasional human company and a willingness to share are all features of this assignment. Responsibilities are relatively light and therefore recommend this assignment would suit someone who has additional work interests that can be managed from a home base. Primarily to be in loco parentis for our five year old Shar Pei dog (occasional walks, low level activity), two independent cats (require feeding and TLC generally come and go as they please), 13 pond fish (occasional feeding each week), a few house plants - general light domestic duties e.g. cleaning up after oneself, looking after the pets and putting the bins out on a weekly basis, while this busy professional couple travel for work. You will have the freedom of the four bedroom house, own bathroom and plenty of time to undertake your own work related activities. Supervising suppliers carrying out any garden duties, pond or other maintenance activities would be required occasionally. Our home is modern, well equipped with wifi internet access, is close to fields, woods, a lake and the local town and requires little or no maintenance. The garden is very peaceful to sit in on a sunny afternoon, listening to the water trickle and watching the fish glide up and down. We are 15 minutes drive from an international airport, so great for those short European getaways, yet seldom will you hear much aircraft noise. Public transport is also a five minute walk away. We are 45 minutes from central Amsterdam and other cities if you like to explore. The local town has good sports and shopping facilities and if you really want to experience the Dutch lifestyle, use a bicycle to get around locally, it safe and great fun. We need someone for two weeks in the April school holidays, from the 18th to the 3rd May. You need to be self-sufficient, have your own car and be happy to live in an extremely quiet, riverside setting with just the animals and an orange orchard for neighbours. We have a very quiet tenant on the property who is there to sleep only three days a week. You may not even see him! Gisborne with its cafes, movies and lots of shops is only 15 minutes away and there is a dairy for the basics about five minutes drive away. You need to water plants, mow the lawn, fill the troughs for the sheep, collect the eggs, feed the cats and generally enjoy the property. That's it! Lovely, quiet, tranquil spot within easy reach of Gisborne city if you can't do without your cappucinos. The rewards will be great, as all our pets are very gentle and loving. We are hoping to combine our trip to England with a trip to Florida. So, therefore the long period away from home. Mature couples only, PLEASE.

16. Two Weeks Near Tokyo, Japan

Two-bed townhouse and little boy cat need your care for two weeks in summer (close to Tokyo!) A responsible, mature person or people to take care of one very loving, little boy, and mind the house for about two weeks in the Japanese summer. Daily care and attention for a very affectionate little indoor cat. Keeping the house running; watering the plants, bringing in the post, keeping things tidy, etc. Giving me regular updates on how things are going. I have a modern two floor terrace house. Two bedrooms, each with a double bed (the second room is on the small side but very comfortable), open-plan living, dining kitchen - all with aircon and two and a half bathrooms. We are in a nice, quiet, international courtyard with an enclosed, private patio. At the same time another ‘mind-my-housesitter’ will be across the courtyard, looking after two other cat friends, so there is a great support network here. It is a 10 minute walk to the train station and a 15 minute train ride to Shibuya station. I also have a bike you are welcome to use. My cat is a young boy with lots of energy. He will happily play on his own, but loves a cuddle and game or two. He is very vocal especially when he thinks you are off out, but give him a treat and he's fine. He is an indoor cat, with patio privileges, so please watch your feet as you come in. I need sitters for about two weeks in the summer; end of July and beginning of August and possibly sooner in March. I will contact shortlisted candidates as soon as possible.

17. Assignments in Dominican Republic

Horse ranch looking for help. I have a 15 acre horse ranch in the beautiful Caribbean and I need a good farm/garden hand to assist in its upkeep. Should be excellent with children and animals. Spanish speaking a plus. Light house duty. There are 16 horses, four chickens and three dogs. I would like to have help in feeding them, repairing fences, help in building a stable, some light gardening duties and general security watch for the farm. This ‘finca’ is on top of a mountain with ocean views across the road. It is somewhat secluded, but within 20 minute drive to downtown. There are three ponds (a fourth will be added), tropical fruit trees (more to be planted) and 80 degree weather year round (average). There is a small, one bedroom house with bathroom, almost finished with an addition (half built) for a living area/ kitchen, that needs some work to complete it. If I can find the right guy or gal, they can be a part of helping me build another house on the property which he/she can live in. This can also lead to a permanent position with a small salary. This could be long term for the right candidate. Also, an excellent opportunity to experience the Caribbean. This is not, as of yet, a paid position, but there is work involved. Free housing and garden space is part of the offer, as well as horseback riding. There are vegetables here and fruit trees.

18. Two Years in Hastings, England

I'm going abroad for work in August 2008. I have a three bed HUGE period (Georgian) flat with a frankly vast garden, open fires, a conservatory. It's light, airy, warm, fabulous views and charmingly tatty in some ways. I'm looking for a relaxed person, over 25, who will appreciate the fact it's 200 metres from the beach, a mile from Hastings town centre, 45 minutes from Brighton, 80 minutes from central London (I commute two to three times a week)and a veritable haven in the storm. Feed two cats, a mother and son, who are eight and ten, and very homey. Water the plants in the conservatory. Keep an eye on the place, keep it cleanish, do some gardening. There's no litter tray, and the cats aren't in any way high maintenance. Broadband access, ideally set up for someone who works from home, maybe writes. Very light and sunny, apparently Hastings is the sunniest place in UK! It has views out over the channel, a beautiful conservatory, (which I use as a lounge) a new 20ft kitchen dining area, a new bathroom complete with power shower, a lovely double room, the huge garden, walking distance of some great bars and cafes and shops, and a short hop to the 15th century lanes and second hand shops that abound in Hastings. Plus of course there's the fish market, daily, and sea swimming for the truly foolish, and loads of great walks along cliff tops and local woods. There's all the usual white goods, plus a freeview box etc, it's a comfortable, quirky and slightly boheme unfinished home that you could be very happy in. Because this is such a long house sit I'll want and need contributions to my mortgage - we can discuss this - and you'll be completely responsible for all bills. I'll need references and a deposit. There are two cats, and so more than a couple of nights away from here could be tricky for any potential housesitter. Commuting daily up to London is possible, but not advisable (pricey and knackering). I can tolerate smokers, as long as you periodically fling open the windows. It's a quiet area and house, so potential party animals wouldn't be happy here, and my neighbour downstairs is elderly (and lovely).

19. Long Term Assignment in Louisiana, USA.

Housesitter needed for plantation mansion. I am seeking a mature person or couple to stay in a wonderful historic mansion that is located in central Louisiana. The home was built by a wealthy plantation owner as his city residence and has been meticulously restored. The home reminds visitors of Tara, the home featured in the movie Gone With the Wind. It would make a fabulous retreat for a writer or retired architect as it offers boundless inspiration. The potential housesitter must be willing to provide references, a possible security deposit, a possible police background check and must not smoke. The housesitter needs to know that the historic home, like many plantation homes, is located near the train area and one does hear the trains that pass. This is one of the most photographed homes in Acadiana and a wonderful place to call home. Feed pets, water plants. I have a housekeeper. Historic mansion located in the heart of Acadiana. Beautiful property. Great neighbors. Home is very large. Like many significant historic Homes, this home is one block from trains which pass by frequently. Estate will be listed for sale and realtor will have access to show home to QUALIFIED buyers only (with advance notice).

20. One Month in Dubai, UAE.

We are looking for someone to look after our two cats while we take our newborn son to see our family for the first time after his birth. Our housesitter(s) should be someone tidy and a cat lover with knowledge of their upkeep. Keeping the house tidy and looking after two housecats. We have a two bedroom apartment with aircon and satellite TV, with a fitness centre on the roof (pool, gym, sauna and steam room). It is located a short taxi ride away from shopping, beaches and nightlife. Dubai is a lively city, although summer is the quietest time. It can get very hot in summer, but all buildings and vehicles are air conditioned. The malls will have huge sales for the avid shopper (Dubai Summer Surprises) which are full of interesting spectacles. Food and drink are reasonably priced, and usually of a good standard. Most restaurants will deliver to you if you want to stay in.

21. One Month in Provence, France

We are looking for responsible, non-smoking if possible, house sitters to live in our house, to provide security during our absence and to look after our two no-problem cats. Live in the house and look after it properly. To contact maintenance people in the unlikely event of a problem arising. The garden watering system is pumped from our river and is simple to operate. The large swimming pool will be operating automatically and should require no maintenance other than hoovering two or three small areas not cleared by the automatic cleaning system. The house is quiet, comfortable and quite spacious. It is situated in a beautiful area, in the vineyards, less than one hour from St Tropez, the coast and the airports of Nice, Toulon and Marseille. Excellent communications: 700 metres to the RN7 and 10 minutes to the A8 autoroute. We are under 1km on a flat road from our village for basic shopping and we have two Intermarche and two LeClerc hypermarkets within 10-15 minutes drive, with extensive general shopping in Brignoles. The house is completely finished, with no work in progress. It has a south facing terrace, with a third kitchen and BBQ. It is set in a one acre mature orchard, fully fenced with electric gates. The other half of the land is a level meadow with a beautiful trout stream along one boundary. The house has four main bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and toilet. 22. Long Term Assignment in Ceara, Brazil

Responsible, desire to give up first world amenities, adventurous, preferably speaks Portuguese (or maybe Spanish and willing to learn?), loves animals, willing to be ‘away from it all’ for six months or so. Be present on the farm, love the dogs, cats and parrots, horses, cow etc. Oversee the gardener (who will help with above animals!), keep place in shape (pipes, pumps, wires, truck etc.) Lovely place (but simple), internet via satellite dish (no phone, no VOIP). Lots of space, so many stars, quiet (except for bugs and frogs singing at night). Not tropical, very nice climate, seasonal rains, not too many biting bugs. Near Catole (1/2km), Mulungu (10km), Fortlaza (120km). Go to Google Earth coordinates are: 04 18' 20S, 38 59' 47W. Full schoolhouse for elementary home schooler. This is not a place for the faint hearted. It is a primitive place. It is not dangerous in the criminal sense but can be a dangerous place for the person who lacks common sense, drinks too much, is unhealthy or foolish. You are on your own here in a sense and need to take care of yourself. There is a small town close by called Mulungu (10km) where there is a bank and post office and shops for the basics (good fruits and veggies). No supermarkets, no prepared food for the microwave, the hospital is basic (no x-ray for example) but functional. We bought a piece of devastated forest and have built it up slowly with small buildings, schoolhouse, and reforested it as we could afford, five yrs ago and we love our farm dearly. We originally moved here to bring up our three children in a simple environment and give them space to grow and home school. Now they are going off to school in USA. We will be coming back and forth from the UK but need a presence on our much loved homestead as we develop it further from afar. It is the ideal situation for the right person, couple or family. VERY cheap to live here if you cook and prepare your own food (as you must). There is a gardener who will help out and a part time ‘maid’. (These are people we consider friends and not servants and we will pay their salaries.) We will consider long term sitters only. Six months initially, then see how it goes. Flights can be expensive to South America so look into that (to Fortaleza), also visa requirements to Brazil from your country. We will be spending some time there as well but you will have your own accommodation. We would love to show you what Ceara has to offer. Our long term goal is slowly build a loose community of foreigners in this area. People who want a quiet and simple place, where their savings or pension will go much further. A great opportunity for someone who wants to try homesteading out prior to making the investment.

22. Two Months in Switzerland

House and dog sitters required for July and August in picturesque Switzerland beautiful house with pool. Due to a work assignment we shall be leaving our beloved house and dog in Switzerland for the months of July and August. We require house sitters to enjoy our house over summer, keep it and the garden clean and tidy and make a big fuss of our mature and very well behaved cocker spaniel. We will also require the sitters to maintain the swimming pool as required. The house is a large Swiss chalet-style property, detached in a large garden with swimming pool. It is in the foothills of the Jura mountain range and enjoys fantastic views over Lake Geneva and the Alps and Mont Blanc beyond. The village is linked to a major town, Nyon, in 20 minutes by mountain railway. Geneva is a further 15 minutes by train. We are English and would prefer English sitters. Our preference would be for a mature, active couple who will happily keep the house in order, the pool maintained and garden tidy. Of course a dog loving couple is essential. References and police record checks will be required.

23. Assignments in Portugal

House and pet sitters in central Portugal. Preferably a couple, who love dogs cats and parrots, and would be prepared to put the animals care before trips out, also take care of our house and plants. Feeding and seeing to the general needs of four dogs, seven cats (outdoor) and a caged parrot, plus keeping the house tidy and clean and watering house plants. Checking to see my TV recordings are okay in bad weather or after a power cut would be good. This is a big house with lots of room and all mod cons, in a rural area with spectacular views to three sides. A car is needed but the local towns have all amenities. We are in a forested and mountainous region with wonderful places to visit, lots of history, walks and magnificent scenery at every turn also a chance to ski on the highest mountain which is an hour away, and can be seen from our windows. We have one neighbour, who is warm and friendly, like all the Portuguese in our area. There are good restaurants nearby, where eating out is very cheap. An extra week to ten days is offered after our return in the apartment in our house, from where you can do your own thing. A car is a must, so you could hire one or borrow our old right hand drive Audi estate. My animals are my family, so their welfare is paramount, one dog needs to be given tablets, but is very easy to handle. The parrot’s cage will need to be cleaned out at least once, so carers would need to be confident with a large bird.

25. Assignments in England

Great farm life opportunity, short or long term (animal au-pair). This is a unique opportunity for you to try the small holding life style. We are looking for male or female animal au-pairs and animal nannys. If you like this idea then keep reading. Are you used to animals, domestic and farm animals? Abroad or home applicants may apply. Short stay or long stay. Not afraid of getting dirty by mucking out. Help care for several animals. Mucking out, feeding, petting and caring in general. Dog walking. Basically anything to do with caring for all our animals to help give me a break anytime during the year to suit.We live in a bungalow on a small holding located close to local village. We are a one minute walk from bus route into the city. Very quite location and rural setting but not too remote that you can not access town life easily without a car. Direct access to many miles of country walks and bike riding tracks if you feel energetic or just chill out. The work can be dirty due to mucking out but fun. This can be a long term sitting or short term sitting and free board and lodgings are provided. Can be used as a work experience or a chance to ‘get away from it all’ experience. At present we have one dog, 11 cats, seven goats, one parakeet and three rats. We are getting ourselves known as a rescue home so animals may increase as time goes on and already in the pipe lines is the possibility of having two Shetland ponies and two kune-kune pigs. So you must be prepared for other animals as they arrive. This is not a holiday sitting but a chance to try a different life style if you want. The opportunity is available all year round either long term or short term to suit. It is to enable me to have some time to myself with my husband who does not work on the holding but home each night. My children have their lives to live, my son moves out in July and my daughter is at home but working at a zoo herself. So every hour of mine is taken up with the animals. I need help! I thought this could be a great way of sorting me out as well as an opportunity for the right person/persons. Although this sounds time consuming you will have plenty of free time on your hands to explore the surrounding area and further a field if you wish. I am very flexible and can let you know further details as required. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you all, Jackie.

29. One Month in London, England

Beautiful cat in beautiful Islington house. We are looking for a responsible person or couple (with references) who would like to live for a short time (11 Feb-5 March 2008) in a grand but lived-in Georgian house full of books (with garden and off street parking) near Highbury and Islington station and shops. You will have to be a cat lover: Romeo is eleven and we have only recently inherited him so he needs stability and calm, but he is very lovely and very responsive. We have a cleaner once a week and a wonderful lady who irons once a week and dusts around another day so there would not be much housework, though you would have to make beds, do your washing (there's a washing machine and tumble dryer) and keep the house tidy. It would be wonderful but not vital if you could do anything in the garden. Most important, since there are builders in the houses on both sides, is that you would sleep in every night and it would be good if you were freelance or retired so that you could be here a lot. And of course, look after our beautiful cat Romeo. Our grown up sons live in Islington and would be there for any difficulties or questions. This is a really lovely old house, slightly bohemian though with all mod cons - two bathrooms and a downstairs shower room. It is wonderfully close to Highbury and Islington station - Victoria Line and two train lines - several bus routes, the shops and restaurants of Upper Street and the Angel, Almeida theatre, Screen on the Green. Access to most parts of London is easy. Your main problem is that this is a short assignment so it isn't any good for people wanting a long one. But, except for feeding, grooming and littering the cat, and putting out recycling boxes and bin bags, there are not many obligations apart from the ones mentioned above.

Animal residents include bunny, guinea pigs, three cats, terrapin and fish. Huge family home, four floors including basement, big park and ravine a minutes walk, five minutes walk to a high street with everything, less than 10 minutes to nearest bus stop. Friends have already booked to use house for two to three weeks in August 2008, and outside dates not firmly settled yet. 40. Four Months in Provence, France

Christmas to spring in Provence. We are looking for mature and responsible house sitters to live in our house, to provide security during our absence and to look after our two no-problem cats. If possible, we would prefer non-smokers. Primarily you will be responsible for the security of the house and to contact maintenance people in the unlikely event of a problem arising. There should be no gardening necessary at this time of year with watering probably not needed during the winter but it would be appreciated in some areas of the garden if it is dry during the Spring. The large swimming pool is always emptied for the winter so requires no maintenance. You would live in the house and look after it properly. We do not have help in the house so you would need to do your cleaning etc. The house is quiet, comfortable and quite spacious. It is situated in a beautiful area, in the vineyards, less than one hour from St Tropez, the coast and the airports of Nice, Toulon and Marseille. Excellent communications - 700 metres to the RN7 and 10 minutes to the A8 autoroute. We are under 1km on a flat road from our village for basic shopping and we have two Intermarche and two LeClerc hypermarkets within 10-15 minutes, with extensive general shopping in Brignoles. There is a large sitting/dining area with closed log fire and a fully fitted open-plan kitchen. ADSL, wifi and Sky TV package. The house is within comfortable walking/cycling distance from the village but in their own interests, sitters should have transport for major shopping and to explore this wonderful area. Ability to communicate in French is necessary in this rural community. The sitters would not normally leave the house unoccupied at night. They must be happy to look after our cats, feed and water them and keep them company. They are lovely, spend time inside and outside via their cat-flap. They are attentive and loving. We would prefer to meet prospective sitters in advance. To try things out we could offer one to two week sitting periods in April/May 2008. References will be required. For our part we can offer an excellent reference from previous regular sitters who will not be available to take up this assignment.

41. Assignments in Dordogne, France

Isolated house in Dordogne, the home of Cro-Magnon. We are looking for someone responsible and caring to keep the house clean, warm and going while we are away. The house is bright and situated on a promontory surrounded by chestnut forest. It is superbly isolated and there is a free high-speed internet and telephone connection. Ideal for a writer. Many famous painted pre-historical caves in the area, which is called the Perigord Noir or black Perigord. The house is a former farm and there is not too much comfort. Housesitters must have experience with an open fire place and wood stoves. It is really isolated (6km to the nearest town/store) and you would need a car but the service station in town will rent you one rather cheap.

42. Two Weeks in France

Visit our 12th century mas in south of France - sitter required. We are looking for someone who likes cats (as we have five indoor and a few ferals about). We have three vegetable gardens and a polytunnel that may need a bit of watering (but that depends on the weather you never know if it'll be a hot dry period or intermittent rain). That's it! Feeding five indoor cats. Feeding five semi-feral cats. Watering vegetable garden (if there is no rain!). The house is fairly isolated up a mountain (we do have a set of lovely French neighbours up the mountain with us, if you need help). The views are stunning (!) and the walks great. To be here and enjoy it you'll have to love nature and cats. It's 40 minutes drive to the nearest big town. I should also warn you that access to the house is via a 2km off road track that some people find difficult and others love! But you'll have use of a small old van. I think this would be best for an adventurous couple. It is not the best place to be if you want to tour round the south of France. But if you love the countryside, quiet, walking and mountains then you'll love it here. The house is centrally heated and we have stoves so you won't get cold. We also will give you access to a laptop and we have 24hr broadband access to the internet. For interested people we will send a link to our website so you can read more about the house.

43. Assignments Near Bordeaux, France

Charente Maritime. Converted barn studio. I am looking for a friendly, clean, non-smoking and responsible person or couple to care for my comfortable home/studio and cat while I am away. The most important thing for me is that my cat has the company he enjoys and feels loved and secure. He needs feeding (croquets) and his dirt tray emptying. Also to water the indoor plants from time to time. The house needs very little maintenance as the interior is modern. I am a artist and live in a converted barn in small hamlet north of Bordeaux on the D730 between the villages of Lorignac and St Ciers Du Taillon ; it’s an easy driving distance from Bordeaux, Saintes, Jonzac, Cognac and Royan, if you like the sea. My delightful French neighbours are cognac producers and so the hamlet is surrounded by vineyards. There are excellent local walks in the forest and along the Gironde estuary. You must have references and bring no pets of your own. The main room of the house is vast with access to the bedrooms by a fairly steep staircase. The bathroom kitchen and utility room are on the ground floor. The entire area is heated by a heat pump which is generally sufficient but from time to time you might wish to light the wood burning insert; for this wood will need to be brought in from outside. There is no public transport so you will need your own wheels. If you think this could suit you I'd love to hear from you.

46. One Week in Devon, England

Cat lover wanted for week in a pretty cottage in Devon. Someone who will look after my three lovely cats Alfie, Ollie and Ellie whilst I go skiing. Making sure the house doesn't burn down would be good too!! Looking after my lovely cats and making sure my house is safe and secure whilst I am away for a week. I live in a lovely 250-year-old cottage with all mod cons in a beautiful village in the Devon countryside. Great transport links to city of Plymouth (10 miles away) and the lovely stannary town of Tavistock (foodie heaven five miles away). The village has everything you need: Co-op, Spar, butchers, chemist, doctors, pub and the prettiest tiny train station. The village is in the outstandingly pretty Tamar Valley and only five miles away from Dartmoor. I also have a lovely garden. Although I do not really wish to pay any one for this opportunity I would be happy to of course pay travel expenses within reason. Must love cats!

47. One Year in Texas, USA

Mature animal lovers sought for extended assignment in country Texas! We are looking for a mature retired couple to housesit for an extended period of time. We have two dogs and one cat, so an animal lover is a must. We are interested in non-smokers with no children. Responsible for pets, home, mail and the yard. We have a one acre lot in a new subdivision. We live outside the city in a rural setting that's quiet and conservative. We have a landscaped yard for the garden lover and pets for the pet lover. The length of the assignment and the work involved in caring for a large home and large yard.

48. One Month in France

French farmhouse on 100 acres. We're looking for a couple or someone to look after our home and animals while we visit family in America. Once every year we like to do some traveling for about three to four weeks. I'm really hoping we can find someone who can help us out every year. We expect for things to be well taken care of, but there really aren't very many responsibilities. Our schedule is pretty flexible. We like to travel in the late spring early summer, but again, that's negotiable. This year we have a wedding to attend sometime around the end of May, so we'll need to work around that. Not many. We've got two very sweet small dogs. They are on an invisible fence system, and spend most of the day playing outside. Apart from feeding and love, they don't need much care. The cat is well, a cat. Not a lot of work there either. The pool will have to be kept clean. It's a saltwater system, and there's a regulator for the PH. It needs a vacuum about once a week, and the skimmers should be checked every day or so. There might be a little watering. That always depends on how much rain we get. Occasionally this area suffers from droughts, but that's pretty unusual in the early part of summer. Our home is an old stone farmhouse, tower, and barn with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. There's a pool, guest house, piano, brand new fully equipped kitchen, two large fireplaces, TV/DVD/satellite and lots of good books. There are two bedrooms in the main house and a crib for a baby. Most of the 100 acres is forested, and there are little walking paths everywhere. In the spring there are wild orchids and cowslips. Occasionally we'll stumble on a cave or ruin. It's a fantastic place for nature lovers and artists. We're in one of the most wild areas of France, and I've been told that we have the least light pollution in Europe. The stars are stunning. Despite its wild feel, we aren't far from civilization. The closest shops are in a village about 10 minutes away, and there are two good sized cities 30 minutes in either direction. The markets are full of fabulous produce. It's a great place for gourmands. There are plenty of tourist attractions. We've lived here for two years, and still haven't seen all of the sights. You'll need to be able to drive. A car may be provided for you if you don't have one. If you're not used to the quiet of the countryside, then it's probably not a good match. Knowing some French is not absolutely necessary, but it's recommended. The people here are very warm, but it's tricky to get by without speaking some French. Besides which, it makes for a much richer experience.

49. Two Weeks in New Jersey, USA

Christmas near New York City. Our two dogs would love to share Christmas with you in our lovely New Jersey home. Hot tub, fireplace, woods and within commuting distance to NYC. We will be gone from 12/21 through 12/28 (but would allow the sitter to stay through New Years if they like) and are looking for someone who likes dogs and would either have their own transportation (we are NOT within walking distance of stores etc) or be willing to rent a car. Our yellow Labrador and our ‘Benji-like’ terrier are very well behaved and need minimal attention. Likewise the plants and the mail. We have a very architecturally modern house with big picture windows and lots of land. It is a great place to relax and think. Please understand we are not within walking distance to stores. There is a bus line at the end of our street, but it doesn't run very often. The bus does take you to the train station to get into New York City. There is also a commuter bus into the city but it is about a 10 minute drive from the house.

50. Two Weeks in Oregon, USA

Wonderful house in Bend, Oregon. A person(s) who loves animals, is adventurous and, of course, responsible and trustworthy. Bend has a wealth of outdoor activities, and the dogs love to go cross country skiing or snowshoeing, so person who likes the winter sports would be ideal for this time of year. Watering house plants. Feeding cat and two dogs twice a day. Walking dogs every day. Nice, three bedroom, 2.5 bathroom, bright and well-furnished home that is walking distance to the Deschutes River trail. Lovely neighborhood. House has cable, stereo, a deck/upstairs with a lovely view, hot tub, and a fenced backyard. Bend (75,000 population) is one of the top 10 winter/summer destinations in country, due to fantastic biking, fishing, hiking, river rafting and golf, all nearby. Great new 50 meter long pool/yoga/work-out center 10 minutes away. House is half hour to Mt Bachelor, a wonderful ski/snowboard mountain. Numerous groomed and open trails for skate and classic skiing. Back country skiing is also quite fun. One of the dogs is active, but is now almost 11, and the other is a year-old Australian cattle dog. She is very sweet and responsive to humans, but can be a handful and needs exercise and lots of human contact and supervision. Cat is easy and nice. A car would be helpful for getting out and exploring the area. We would need to meet you first.

Also some plants in the garden will need watering although we do have a watering system. The house is a renovated granite mill house with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and Sky TV. It is situated near a small hamlet in the Alvarinho wine region of northern Portugal in a secluded wooded spot right along side a small river. We have a river beach, swimming pool and large garden. Three acres of private grounds, very peaceful but with all modern conveniences (wifi, broadband, satellite TV). This is a very quiet location, not isolated but you will need a vehicle. We are happy to offer one month's self-contained accommodation in return for two weeks caring for the animals while we are away.

53. One Month in New York, USA

Large studio, two cats, in Queens, NY. A mature, conscientious person to take care of my two pets, few plants, and the apartment. My travel dates are flexible, must be late January to February, though. I've got two young cats, siblings, male and female who are very affectionate. Chloe has feline herpes which is completely under control, except for slightly runny eyes and a sneeze or two, but I feed them l-lysine daily to keep her in check and Marcel's immune system strong. They are active, almost like kittens, so, they're not appropriate for someone looking for somnolent balls of fur. Responsibilities include caring for cats: feeding (if you're adept, clipping nails), litter, keeping off the furniture (ha!), wiping Chloe's eyes when needed. Plants, not many. Keeping apartment neat and clean. Collecting the mail from box downstairs. Interface with next door neighbor who keeps a watch out for me and my animals. Charming, large, airy and bright studio, freshly painted and decorated. Great for a single, a bit of a squeeze for two. Great neighborhood, totally diverse. Subway is one block away, 25 minutes from midtown Manhattan. Very safe, inside and out. Photos on request. I have no TV. I need to check on references and either meet or speak to the sitter on the phone. Non-smoker, non-meat eater preferred, but I'm not hard and fast on that.

54. One Year in Provence, France

Special person/couple needed for a year in Provence! We are looking for a housesitter who enjoys looking after a cat and a dog in a rural, quiet area of Provence, close to a lively village. We need someone who will live next door to our house, in a cottage, either all year or from November to May. Caring for a dog and a cat and keeping the house secure and aired. We would preferably like someone with building skills as there is an on going renovation project on the property. The house and cottage are surrounded by beautiful, unspoilt countryside. We have seven acres of gardens, olives, meadows and woodland. The local village is lively and has great restaurants, shops, cafes etc. There is plenty of opportunity to improve your French. We would want a long term commitment and preferably someone who would be away for part of the summer. This is not a condition of the position if we found the right person or couple.

55. Assignments in Southern Coastal Spain

Two dogs need you occasionally on Spain's south coast! I'm ideally looking for two people who would like a short holiday in a lovely area and who are honest, reliable and will exercise the dogs daily. Once exercised the dogs are happy to be left so you won't be tied to the house. To look after our pets, Millie a very friendly dog and Harry a rescue dog who is a fairly new addition to the family and still a little unpredictable in his behaviour! He's a lovely dog, and very nice natured, but at the moment, still a bit wary of strangers. Our dogs are not pampered pooches and are unlikely to be any trouble, though Harry does have a very long, wet, tongue! We also have a pet rat but will try to board her if you are not keen to look after her. She's quite a sweetie and really just needs the occasional piece of food putting into her cage. To generally keep the place clean and tidy and put the Hoover in the pool if necessary. To assist with any rental guests who may be staying in our apartment, which is on site. We don't tend to have many guests out of season, and it's unlikely that we will have them at that time, though it is possible. The apartment is fully self contained and well equipped so our guests tend not to need anything while they are here. Our house is tucked away at the end of a lane on a hillside overlooking a village. The sea views from the house and terraces are spectacular! While sunny weather in January cannot be guaranteed, we usually find it is very nice at that time of year. This area is known for having the best climate in Europe and it's almost certainly going to be better than in the UK! We are only 1/2km from the sea and five minutes from the motorway so the road links are ideal if you wish to explore. All amenities are nearby. The house is bright and airy and very comfortable to live in. We have views across the Mediterranean with spectacular sunsets through the winter. More photos and information can be viewed on our home exchange listing. I'm travelling to the UK on Monday Jan 21st and need sitters until Friday 25th. Ideally I would like someone to arrive on Sunday 20th so we can meet. You would be very welcome to extend your stay here, if you wish, by having a few extra days in our apartment (as long as it's not already booked) or an extra few days in the house. This could be at either end of your stay. It may be possible to arrange for you to have to use of my car while I am away. I hope to hear from anyone who might be interested.

56. Two Months in Tuscany, Italy

Cat lover wanted for couple of months in Italian countryside. We are looking for a reliable, capable, person to stay in our lovely warm cottage for a couple of months, from early January 2007 and look after our four great cats. Our main requirements are that the house sitter is honest, sane, a real cat lover (with experience) and preferably creative. None other than to feed the cats twice a day, and not to go off on long jaunts (ie to stay put). This is an ideal opportunity for a writer, or someone who wants to have a period of consolidated peace in a really lovely setting in the heart of Tuscany. The cottage is very comfortable, with lovely bathroom and well equipped kitchen area. It has excellent underfloor heating and a washing machine. It is in spectacular walking country and has a beautiful garden. It is about a mile from the nearest village, and we could lend you an old car for occasional trips. This assignment would suit one person rather than a couple, simply because of the accommodation. We would need a non-smoker. You would need to be independent, and not be looking for social life, as although we are near a very friendly village, we are in the heart of the countryside.

57. One Year in Andalucia, Spain

A year in Los Molinillos, Capileira, Spain! We are looking for a mature, responsible couple to care for a new-built, traditional stone house set in five acres of trees and calm. The house is within easy walking distance from two Andalucian mountain villages and about one hour's drive from Granada. The coast (Costa Tropical) is also about an hour's drive away.To look after the house, garden and land and two friendly and well-trained dogs. Sitters should like gardening and be somewhat mechanically practical. The house is well-constructed with massive insulation and double glazing, south facing and very comfortable. There is one double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and an open plan kitchen and living area. There is a guest bathroom off the living area and a wonderful terrace with views as far as the Rif mountains in Morocco. The land is tree-covered and very tranquil. The accommodation is fully furnished and ready for immediate occupation. This farm and house are in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas facing the Mediterranean at about 1500 metres (5000 feet). Although the area has a micro-climate and has generally warm days throughout the winter, it can be cold at night, though the house is very warm inside. The house has an efficient solar electricity system, though sometimes a generator has to be run on overcast days or to use the washing machine. Excellent town water is connected as well as telephone and dial up (slow) internet connection.

58. Two Weeks in Wales, UK.

Welsh stone farmhouse. Single or couple who love the peace and quiet of the countryside, to care for two cats, assorted chickens and ducks and large garden high on Welsh hillside. Stay in house to ensure it is secure, feed two cats and other animals daily, water plants in greenhouse weekly, take messages and keep owner informed of them, keep outside tidy and keep down weeds. Extremely private, quiet, beautiful views and lots of wildlife. Suit writer or photographer. Lovely old stone house with huge fireplace, comfortable large lounge, farm house kitchen and beamed rooms. Several dates required over the year from 10 days to six weeks, same person each time preferred.

59. Two Months in Idaho, USA

Two affectionate house dogs in peaceful retirement setting in Idaho. I need a house sitter from 1 March through 1 May 2008. Our new retirement home is tucked in the trees on five acres with a beautiful view of Meadows Valley, and we are located three miles from the small town of New Meadows. McCall Idaho and Payette Lake are approximately 10 miles away. Feed two dogs, twice daily and maintain a clean dog kennel, that is attached to the house and is under cover. The dogs are well trained and very affectionate house dogs. We are looking for dog lovers to care for our pets while we travel in Mexico. The Brundage Ski Area is about 10 miles away and open until 15 April and during the summer for use of mountain-bike trails. There is an 18-hole golf course and Zim's outdoor hot springs pool is only one mile from our home. The Salmon river is 30 miles away (great steelhead fishing), and Hells Canyon national recreation area is approximately 60 miles away. We have a heated garage for your personal vehicle. Our home is new and modern, with DSL computer hook up and Dish TV. Our home is located three miles from town in a low-density retirement community. New Meadows has only 500 people. Our home site is very quiet and the home is built on five acres with mature conifer trees. We have a beautiful view. This is country living! During March there will be some snow storms, but we will have the driveway plowed on a regular basis if needed. The nearest hospital is 10 miles away, but we have a local medical clinic.

60. One Week in Greenwich, London, UK

One week in Greenwich, October. I am looking for a reliable, responsible person or couple to take care of my cat and flat between October 5th - 14th. Feeding and generally spoiling my very loving cat. Watering plants. Bringing in mail. The usual stuff... A stunning triplex apartment with amazing views and private terrace in lovely Greenwich. Very close to lots of transport links. My flat is on the 5th floor, up 88 stairs, so you need to be fit! No smokers. Cat lovers rather than cat toleraters required!

61. Six Months in Wales, UK

Rural Wales. If you are free for 4-6 months from October 2007 and would like to spend time in a large farmhouse cum guesthouse on the edge of the Brecon Beacons this could be for you. Dates and terms are very flexible. The sitter will have sole charge for about half of the time. There is also an option to stay for a while on the Isle of Mull if you want. The owner will be staying occasionally but will be away for the bulk of the time. Owner’s dog (very lively black Labrador) will also occasionally need a minder. The location is rural and very scenic, definitely not somewhere for anyone seeking nightlife. Mountains, river, countryside all on doorstep. You will need to be happy to have the owner staying at times. Although the house is fairly large (seven bedrooms) we would need to be able to rub along together.

62. Three Weeks in France.

Water mill (and animals) in France. Responsible, friendly, animal-loving house sitters to look after our property and animals, and maintain the level of the river, while we go on holiday for three weeks. Our dogs (mongrel, German shepherds) need companionship, entertainment and feeding. We also have a few chickens, ducks and rabbits (that need feeding, watering and shutting in at night), and a horse (who needs nothing more than a carrot or slice of hay now and again). Because we live in a water mill, and generate most of our own electricity, you might also have to regulate the level of river by opening the lock gates if it rains heavily. Space, peace and quiet, so ideal for relaxing, writing, painting etc. Our house is in a small hamlet and the nearest shop, baker, post office etc is about 2km away (car available). We have a large garden, with a river running through it, and the surrounding countryside and forests are ideal for cycling (bikes available) and walking. Broadband internet and satellite TV also available. Best suited to people who like animals and outdoor life. Some ability to communicate in French pretty much essential.

63. Three Weeks in Costa Rica

Costa Rica luxury mountain house. Responsible person who will benefit from this inspired and artistic setting with a lovely view of the river, bamboo cathedral and the city lights. We enjoy a perfect 72 degree temperature. You must love animals! We have three wonderful dogs (one old Irish terrier and two adopted mutts) and two small white kittens who love company. Our maid Lola handles most everything except their breakfast and of course the attention that an animal lover instinctively provides. We need you for overnight stays and breakfast with the animals. This is a luxury, artistic home with river view and bamboo cathedral. Wireless internet, hot tub on a spacious deck with city lights view of San Jose. Car included. From our home you can experience day trips to the rainforest/cloud forest, volcanoes and beaches. Do you have a love for animals? You can manage in English here but a little Spanish would be helpful. This is Costa Rica's green season. Just about every day you have sunshine and beautiful mornings (with usually about two hours of rain in the afternoon, which we find perfect for napping).

64. One Year in Norway

A year on a remote island in Norway, north of the Arctic circle! We need a wilderness and nature loving couple who are responsible and capable and willing to live in a friendly village on a remote island 100 miles north of the Arctic circle. A four bedroom house with central heating, a wood fired kitchen stove, cat, hens if desired. It’s a large, warm and comfortable old timber house plus barn with large insulated studio, kitchen garden if wanted, canoe and boat. It's on a remote island (pop700) with stunning 360 degree views to fjord and mountains. Rural wilderness experience of a lifetime. This is for one year in a place with mild summers and long winters with temperatures varying from 10 degrees C plus to 10 degrees minus.

65. Two Months On A Greek Island

Eccentric cottage on Greek island. Someone who can cope with and possibly even enjoy my very eccentric, bohemian, funky little house (not isolated) which might suit a painter/writer/musician looking for a hideaway in which to focus and create. I need an occupant for various periods (about eight to10 weeks) throughout the year while I go away to work, especially autumn and spring. Although I have put dates in the advert, they are not fixed and so there is flexibility there. Feeding a dog and some cats once a day. Watering plants if necessary. Although eccentric, my house is situated on a beautiful Greek Island where people are friendly and helpful usually. There are lots of books and musical instruments to compensate for no TV and there is ADSL connection if you have a laptop. There is no public transport on the island but hitching is easy and walking is pleasant. Market town is 15 minutes on bike which is available. There are taxis. I must stress that the house is very old and bohemian in style but there are the necessary facilities such as bathroom, hot water, washing machine, etc.

66. One Month in Norway

Norwegian countryside 30 minutes to Oslo. Somebody who is reliable and who wants to experience Norway and all its beauty, but not live in the city. Need somebody to look after my cat and occasionally water the plants. My house has a lot of character, and is in the countryside but very easy access to everything. The nearest bus stop and local supermarket is five minutes walk away and the bus takes you in to a small town with large shopping centre, cinema, restaurants etc. From here you can also take a train into Oslo city which takes 30 minutes. The airport is less than 10 minutes by car. The house is surrounded by farms and it is about 30 minutes to drive to a number of fjords (lakes), forests etc. The house although extremely liveable is waiting to be renovated. So if you are happy to use a fully functioning kitchen from the 60s-70s and don't mind that the house needs a good coat of paint then things should be fine.

67. Two Months in Montana, USA

Homestead with character in Montana's Paradise Valley. My husband and I are looking for a sitter or sitters to stay in our home and care for our cats for two periods this winter while we visit friends and family in the southwest desert: November 1 2007 to early January 2008, and February through March 2008. There are a few house plants to take care of, and we'd like to have the mail forwarded once a week. Our main concern is that we know our four cats are well-cared for, which means locking them in every night and making sure the house stays warm. And sharing your lap and bed. We are well-located in Montana's scenic Paradise Valley, about 10 miles south of Livingston (a small town with a healthy mixture of writers, artists and blue collar residents). Yellowstone National Park is about 50 miles to the south; Bridger Bowl ski area about an hour away in Bozeman. We're 15 miles from Chico Hot Springs, a mile and a half from the Yellowstone River. Our house is an old homestead, built in 1893, and the property abuts the national forest. It is rustic - we heat with a wood stove - but has modern amenities (wireless internet, satellite TV). There are five bedrooms (two of which we use as office space), two and half baths, wood floors. This is a good situation for someone who likes winter and loves cats. We will pay all utilities, provide you with firewood, and reimburse you for cat and other household expenses. Use of canoe, drift boat and car is a possibility. Potential sitters should be aware that the wind blows fiercely here.

68. One Month in Canary Islands, Spain

Cave-house and pet sitter santed for Gran Canary Island for August. A kind, responsible dog lover who enjoys the countryside and living in a village area in an authentic cave house with all facilities. The house sitter will look after our two dogs who live in an enclosed area where they run free. A neighbour's dog usually hangs out with us and we feed him too! Daily dog walking in the valley (usually from 7.30 am to 8.20 before it gets too hot) and some mild household tasks such as general upkeep and looking after plants and the garden. A cave house in the centre of Gran Canary Island. It is situated overlooking a valley in a quiet area. The view is terrific. The weather is glorious. The cave house is authentic and is very cool in the summer. It has all the facilities plus a broadband connection. There is a terrace and garden to enjoy the outdoor life. It is an ideal location for a writer or artist who wants time alone and who enjoys the company of friendly dogs. The house is a five minute walk from the car park. It might be necessary to consider renting a car but if you don't mind walking 15 minutes or less, there is a scenic mountain path to the local pottery village where there is a regular bus service to Las Palmas and the neighbouring villages. There is an excellent taxi service also. The local village has a Spar supermarket and a few pubs and some authentic Canarian restaurants and a great Italian restaurant. Another village, Santa Brigida, has a weekly fruit and veg market with great atmosphere.

69. Two Weeks in Alsace, France

Someone (or two people) to keep my house clean and tidy, care for my garden and pool and look after my chickens. Open and shut the hen house morning and night, collect eggs, check and maintain water and feed, clean house every four days, water plants if necessary, clean pool. Two weeks in august, lovely peaceful setting in the Alsace, France. We have an outdoor pool, boulangerie in walking distance, fresh eggs every day. You need to have your own car or be a keen cyclist as we are in rural French village. It is only a 15 minute drive to a tram stop in Basel, Switzerland, and 10 minutes drive to a small supermarket. Delivery vans to the village. This is a non-payment house sit, which would suit someone wanting a quiet holiday.

70. One Year in Southern Spain

Southern Spain for 12 months. We are particularly interested in retired couples from the UK who are dog lovers. The dog sitting period would be for a period of around 12-14 months. Our dog (Mac) needs walking at least twice a day and cannot be left alone in the house for long periods. He also appreciates being taken to the beach bar and fed 'tapas' on a regular basis :-) Forwarding our mail to the UK on a monthly basis. Apart from watering a few plants no other specific responsibilities would be expected beyond standard household maintenance. We have a three bedroom townhouse with a roof terrace looking over the sea. Rooftop kitchen area and barbecue. The beach is a five minute walk away down quite a steep hill. Located on Spain's Costa Tropical, which has Europe's finest climate. There's a shared swimming pool available between June and September. The house is well equipped with all mod-cons including satellite TV with the mainstream UK channels. It has easy access (one hour) to Malaga and Granada airports. The Sierra Nevada ski resort is about a 90 minute drive away. Great opportunities locally for outdoor activities including walking, diving, golf and skiing. Anyone interested must be prepared to commit (100%) to a period of 12 to 14 months beginning around November 2007. Firm dates would be arranged with the sitters. Monthly costs for water and electric amount to around 70 euros per month. Gas bottles cost 12 euro each; you'd be unlikely to get through one per month. A cleaner can come in for two hours per week if you wish for 20 euros per week. If you want to leave the phone connected the monthly charge for the line rental and broadband connection is nearly 70 euros plus calls. It's important to note that Almuecar is very much a Spanish town that hasn't become a ‘Little Britain’ like many places along the Costa del Sol. The house does not have a garden. You'd probably want to rent a car for getting around or better still, bring your own with you.

71. Three Months in Upstate New York, USA

Foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. My wife and I are professors in the vicinity of Saratoga Springs, New York. We own a beautiful home on two acres of land in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. It is 3000 square feet with a sunroom and a porch. It is beautifully landscaped. We have a whirlpool bath, high speed internet etc. We are going on sabbatical spring semester of 08, and are looking for someone to housesit and take care of our pet cat. We are looking for the months of February, March and April but could expand or contract that if needed. Please contact us if you are interested. Take care of cat. We have a sunroom with a fireplace, which is great in winter. One can sit there warmly with snow on ground all around. Close to southern Vermont, Finger Lakes etc. This is a great winter area, with skiing, hiking etc very close. Downtown Saratoga is on the historical register because it is a wonderfully preserved small town. Many tourists come to visit our town all year long. Need some maturity. It is a big house.

72. One Month in Orkney, Scotland, UK

Orkney country house needs holiday sitter. All the usual attributes! You know who you are, genuine lovers of dog walking preferred. Two dogs, a cat that lives in the barn (doesn't come in), five friendly hens who live free range in one of the walled gardens. Our dogs need two walks a day. There are three beaches within a five minute stroll, quiet lanes and astonishing island scenery. It's a beautiful Victorian house in four acres of walled gardens. We are two miles from the village (shops, pubs, post office, doctor, ferry) and 25 minutes drive from Kirkwall, Orkney's capital. A car is essential. A love of wild and wuthering island weather too. You will need to get here from mainland Scotland, via the boat (choose from two boats, from Aberdeen or from Caithness), or fly in and hire a car in Kirkwall. Orkney isn't a place for lovers of nightlife.

73. Assignments in Surrey, England

Parrot loving house sitter wanted. We are an unusual household. We run a busy physiotherapy clinic from our large house in Surrey and this will carry on regardless whilst we are away! We need someone who won't mind constant comings and goings all day (conversely it means we don't need you to be hanging around all day to maintain a presence). So...you will need to be tolerant of others as well as being an expert with parrots. We know we are asking a lot! Our parrot, Fergus, is accustomed to being fussed over first thing in the morning, at lunchtime and in the evening. He is not partial to children (nor is our house!). Fergus is our main concern. We need someone who is accustomed to handling parrots and is therefore sufficiently confident to look after Fergus. He doesn't bite or scream and we don't want him to learn either of these behaviours! He is happy spending whole chunks of time in his cage in the corner of the treatment room but also expects time out around the house and in his cage in the garden (he is clipped and in fact plucks his feathers but that's another story). Our house is on the edge of Wentworth golf course and 200 yards from Windsor great park. Our nearest train station is Virginia Water which is about 40 minutes from London Waterloo. The garden is stunning, the house open plan downstairs with lots of huge windows which are south facing onto the garden. Everything tends to be orientated towards the large garden which is totally secluded and graced with waterfalls and ponds, wild ducks and of course the parrot. There is a large well-equipped pilates studio out there, also, which you are welcome to use. At the time of writing (June 2007) our physio practice is busy. Understand that this is an essential part of the life here and you will inevitably come into contact with our patients. And there is the parrot. The dates we have entered are not definitive. We have written this ad to try to hook up with potential house and parrot sitters and then to chat about dates. We would love to be able to go away in the autumn and / or winter but are unable to go because of our parrot. We are hoping that by October the practice will for the most part be moved out of the house so it will be an altogether different experience for potential sitters.

74. Two Months in Echuca, Australia

House sitter required in Echuca on the Murray River in Victoria. Urgent, our house sitter has had to decline for family reasons so we need a replacement, preferably a reasonably fit retired couple who are non-smokers. Maintain the house as found, collect mail, mow lawns if necessary using a ride on mower, water fernery and pot plants. Most importantly care for our two female Labradors (seven and eight years old) and our seven-year-old male cat. Our house is centrally heated and is very cosy at this time of year. It has four bedrooms, two bathrooms, is two years old and situated on 1.5 acres on the edge of town, 6km from the post office. Garden consists of native trees, shrubs and lawns. Echuca is a popular tourist town and is home to the world’s largest fleet of steam driven paddle boats. It is also host to many weekend activities. You could enjoy the activities of the town and its environs or just relax at home.

75. One Month in The Rhine Valley, Switzerland

Peace and quiet in Switzerland. I am looking for a reliable individual or couple to look after my ground floor apartment while I am away. You must like cats, since I have two that need care. Apart from that, the duties are simple: Just keep my home in clean state, bring in the mail, water the yard, and mow the grass. The pool also requires cleaning when used regularly. You will have access to an attractive yard and patio with a wonderful view of the foothills of the Alps. A small above ground pool is available for cooling off on those hot days. I live in the Rhine Valley region in eastern Switzerland which is simply gorgeous! My apartment is spacious, with two bedrooms, two studies, two bathrooms, a spacious living room, and a fully modern kitchen with all the amenities. This is a rather small, rural community, but there is a sizable town just minutes away, with many fine restaurants and shopping facilities. The Rhine river is less than a mile to the east, and has a marvellous paved recreational trail that runs along it. A great place to do a little walking, running, bicycling or roller blading! Moreover, attractive hiking trails will let you explore some of the surrounding countryside. You will have use of my car for daily transportation. Also, there is an excellent bus service available. If you are looking for a quiet getaway in beautiful Switzerland, then this assignment is for you! Like I mentioned, this is a rural community; so if you're looking for exciting night life, then this might not be the location for you. Good references are a plus. Other than that, being able to drive a stick shift is a major factor to utilizing my car as transportation, as it has a manual transmission. Cable TV and broadband internet are also available.

76. One Month in Far North Queensland, Australia

Enjoy tropical paradise in Australia. We are looking for a sitter while we visit our daughter in China. We would like an experienced responsible professional or retired couple or individual who likes animals and gardening. We have two affectionate dobermans who need a walk every day, fish to feed (aquarium and outdoor pond) and watering of some indoor and outdoor plants (most of the garden of natives looks after itself). Our two storey house is set in a leafy suburb on the side of a rainforest hillside 10 minutes from the centre of Cairns city, beaches and the rainforest with crystal clear creeks. We have a pool, lovely native garden and patios on two sides of the house for outdoor living. As a tourist destination with the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics world heritage rainforest on our doorstep there is lots to enjoy. Winter in Cairns is wonderful: warm with blue skies. We have bikes and would negotiate use of our car. Reliability is our main requirement so references are essential, experience with animals (and liking dogs) is also a key requirement.

77. Eight Months in Brittany, France

House sitter wanted central Brittany. Wanted someone who will love our home as much as we do. Someone who will treat our home and our neighbours with respect, integrity and honesty. We can be flexible on sitting dates, from three months to a year. As you may have gathered, we love our home and garden. So much so that we would like our garden to be tended and our house lived in whilst we are away working. No hard work, just live in it and enjoy the country, village life and explore Brittany. Nearly all major links are no more than 90 minutes away. Dinard and Brest airport plus St Malo. Less for Lorient or Brest airports and Roscoff. The north and south coast are both 50 minutes away. There is a shop in our village and local English speaking support and translators for anyone who is house hunting. The house has two bedrooms, one of which is in a self contained annexe. Broadband and satellite TV, log burner and heating. Conservatory and terrace, plus fully fenced 800 square metre garden. Water, electric, telephone, broadband etc charged at cost. If you are interested, full details and photos can be supplied. We welcome mature applicants. Well behaved dog and cat, no problem, smokers no problem. The property has beautiful views but this also means that it is on a hill (I have lost half a stone just living here!), which unfortunately means that it may not suit people with walking difficulties.

78. One Month in Worcestershire, UK

Riverside retreat in Worcestershire, UK (re-advert). A sensitive individual or couple (preferably non-smoking) to look after our little wooden chalet by the river Severn and our loveably neurotic border collie, Milo. Generally keeping the garden watered in hot weather and the dog walked, otherwise relax and enjoy the surroundings! Totally peaceful, secluded and idyllic location, 10ft from the river itself and next to a large wood and conservation area. Ideal for fishing (dependant on season), walking and relaxing! Chalet is totally self-sufficient with solar panels for electricity, rainwater collection and compost toilet system. Will be a need for water conservation in dry weather and electric-use conservation in wet weather! As whole garden runs into the River, not an ideal location for children. Chalet is two minutes from vehicle parking area so you need to be fairly able bodied to get here.

79. Two Months in Florence, Italy

Property for home sitting in Italy, Florence. I'm looking for someone reliable, with references, who likes the country and loves dogs. I would prefer a couple with experience on rural properties. The tasks required are to guard the house and to give food to the pets, to water the flower pots and some new trees, and to clean up a small apartment (35 square metres) beside the house, where tourists will come to stay for one week. My vacation rental has been reserved for five weeks during the summer and the apartment must be clean for my guests’ arrival. My two bedroom typical colonial house is 8km from Florence in Tuscany, on a fairly large rural property. A quiet place in the country. There are many fruit trees and you can eat all the time fruit from the land. The house is fully supplied, there is everything you need. ADSL free. I have a dog, ‘Pastore Abruzzese’ and a cat. The house is 25 minutes walk from the bus station.

80. Ongoing Assignment in Ohio, USA

Rural north-west Ohio. Someone who will take care of the small front yard and keep the house in good condition. A non-smoker. There is a baby grand piano and a gas fireplace plus a nice dining room for dinners with friends. We are looking for someone responsible and who loves historical homes and rural communities. Take care of the lawn and keep the house in good condition. Hello, I have a lovely Craftsman home built in 1911 in a small, rural town in Northwest Ohio. It has been recently renovated. Unfortunately, there is not a backyard but we have wonderful large city and county parks. I used to walk our dogs to the largest city park through the college campus. It was about a half hour walk (if we didn't stop to visit and chat along the way). The park has wooded areas, which are great for frisbee throwing, and a creek with babbling water. Our dogs and I used go down to the creek and sit on the large rocks and listen to the water. The county has several parks with hiking trails. Our favorite is a mile and a half long walk around a marsh. Our dogs went leash-free and loved chasing the ducks. Regarding our Craftsman, it's larger than a bungalow. The primary inspiration for the Craftsman style was to look to nature (lots of windows), local materials, and local building traditions. When you walk into a Craftsman home, you experience the sense of space, the openness of the rooms, and the bold-square styling. The Craftsman style was tied to the Craftsman movement of the early 20th century, which stressed comfort and utility. The woodwork is heavy and dark, but is usually square or simple. These homes have dark-patinated brass hardware, cosy lanterns hanging as sconces on the porch. Exposed rafter ends, overhanging eaves, and clipped gables are common features. In addition, windows have divided panes in the upper sash and a single pane in the lower sash. Craftsman homes have a sloping roof line and a wide, sheltering overhang that makes the house appear to nestle into the earth. The porch is wide enough to feel like an outside room. About the porch, it is a lovely L-shaped front porch with wicker furniture, which we enjoyed daily, especially since the air is always fresh and clean. There is a baby grand piano in the living room by the bay windows. The bedrooms are on the second floor and include two antique bedroom sets. Bathroom has original claw-footed tub (which means your bathwater will stay warmer longer). There is a new furnace and the living room fireplace is ready for a gas log set. If you wouldn't mind overseeing the installation we'll pay for it. The house is walking distance to the downtown, several restaurants, several churches, public library, etc. The neighbors are very friendly. The house has cable TV, free long distance calls within US telephone service, high speed internet, dishes, silverware, towels, sheets, etc. I lived there for over 15 years and love it for many reasons but mostly because the cost of living is extremely low and because it is less than two hours away from Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio, and Detroit (which is where we regularly visited our favorite Ethiopian restaurant). It is about six hours from Toronto and Chicago. We have a large state of the art YMCA with a beautiful indoor swimming pool and a brand new exercise facility. There is a dry sauna in the adult dressing/shower room (which means the kids and families have a separate dressing/shower room). My husband is a contractor for the army and we never know where we will be next (I'm sure you understand). But we want to keep the house for our retirement. We like to visit our friends often and can stay with them. Basically, you could live in the house as long as you want. There are two vehicles you can use: an old Ford wagon and a 1997 Montero Sport (outfitted with Sirius satellite radio). They have been sitting since June but there is an excellent mechanic two blocks away that has very low prices but does excellent work. We would pay for any repairs needed. Let me know if you are interested. It is a large house with a small front yard. There is no backyard for pets. It's a small town of approximately 19,000 so everyone knows everyone's business.

81. Two Months in Waterloo, Belgium

Responsible sitter who will keep things tidy and care for our medium sized (8 kg) dog. Care for the dog and any routine upkeep and maintenance required. Lawn care is not necessary as we have a gentleman who already takes care of it. We have a four bedroom, two bathroom home, with eat-in kitchen and full dining room. Home office set-up in upstairs loft with sky light window. Good sized, fenced in garden. Pretty and quiet neighborhood near to the battlefields of Napoleon's final defeat. French-speaking neighborhood, but many English speakers also because of the large number of expats. Neighbors can watch the dog for one or two days if you need to go away for a short trip. Having a car is useful because the train station is a long walk (probably would be OK to bike there). Dates are fairly flexible now and will be finalized around the end of May.

82. Two Months in Las Vegas, USA

We like to travel without our cats. Late this year, my wife and I will be going on an extended vacation to Europe and we need to find someone to watch our cats and house. We have a great three bedroom, two bathroom house in North Las Vegas, Nevada. We would like to meet a responsible person that would watch over the cats and house. Indoor cats so they are easy to care for. House is a no maintenance type place. Feed the cats, take them to the vet, if necessary, and just watch over the place. We want someone that will not ruin our house and someone that wants to stay for a couple of months. We would even consider a salary for the right person. It's clean and convenient with two big screen TVs and a good air conditioner. Two miles from a good casino. Responsible with verifiable references. We will check out the references too because we have a nice house and we love our cats.

83. Two Weeks in Florida, USA

Townhouse in beautiful Palm Beach Gardens Florida, golf, beaches and fishing! We need someone to come and enjoy the warm southern climate and beautiful beaches of South Florida in exchange for watching our house and two very dear pets, a senior female cat and a young female dog. The dog is a papillion, a small breed. We prefer a female individual or a couple over 25 years of age. Must be dependable, have references and be willing to sign a house-sitting agreement. Responsibilities include taking care of our two pets, a mellow old female house cat and a perky loving female papillion (small dog). The cat is older and pretty much keeps to herself, though she does like attention at times. The dog will except as much attention as you are willing to give. We ask that you are home in the evenings to feed and give proper attention to the girls. We have a fenced in backyard so neither require actual walking just keep an eye on them when they are outside. We have a beautiful lake to walk around if you wish to take the dog for a walk. The cat was recently diagnosed with cancer. However, as of this date there are no special instructions for her care. We ask that you keep a close watch on her as she is very dear to us. The House: There is really nothing that you will be required to do other than maintain its current condition and keep it clean. The Utilities: You will not be responsible for utilities. We have a beautiful brand new townhouse located in beautiful Palm Beach Gardens, Florida just 10 minutes from the beach and the fabulous Gardens Mall (Macy's, Apple, Nordstroms). It includes high speed internet connection, big screen cable television, private fenced property. (Pictures will be posted after 4 October.) We are near some of the finest fishing spots in the world and we cannot forget our proximity to one of the world's most prestigious golf course, PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, which is literally across the street! We prefer someone who would come perhaps a week or so prior to our departure so that we may meet and become acquainted with our girls. We will check credit, references and background. Also we will require a small deposit to be refunded when we return. We ask that you read and sign a house sitting agreement. You are not responsible for utilities however we do ask that you provide your food and drink.

84. Two Weeks in Rocky Mountains, USA

Active person or couple needed for dog and cat care in the Rocky mountains. An active fit person(s) to care for our dog and cat in the beautiful ski resort town of Breckenridge, CO. It is best if you are active and enjoy the outdoors and will put the time into walking our dog. He enjoys off leash hikes in the woods. We are also set up well for working quiet hours at home. This is an ideal house for cooking, reading, walks, working online, exercising outdoors, and exploring the small mountain towns in the area. (Nearby towns: Frisco, Dillon, Silverthorne, Copper Mountain, Keystone. Vail, Beaver Creek, and Edwards are over the Pass). We are looking for a non-smoking, physically active, honest clean responsible person or couple who enjoy animals and the outdoors. Put out food and water for the cat and dog, take the dog on walks or hikes. Water the potted plants inside and the potted plants outside; the rest of the natural yard with aspens, pines, spruce and wild flowers is on a drip system. You will need to vacuum and clean the two separate door entrance areas where the dog runs in and out. Our home is fully equipped, has four bedrooms, a wonderful kitchen, cable TV, wireless internet, living room, dining room, a small TV and reading area and a large outside deck with barbeque. Located in the charming mountain town of Breckenridge, 1.5 hours west of Denver, Colorado with mountain views, pine trees, lakes and rivers. Several nearby 14,000 foot mountain peaks. A fun area for hiking, cycling, mountain biking (you can rent bikes), fishing, golfing, lake kayaking and sailing (you can rent boats). The town (within walking distance) has small shops and restaurants, art and music. We are not remote, you will be able to find anything you need within 30 minutes in Summit County (www.summitnet.com). Please visit: www.breckenridge.snow.com or www.gobreck.com or Google the town for more information and to view pictures and town events. Shuttle vans available from Denver international airport. Local bus system and bike paths. Although the home needs little to no maintenance, we are at altitude 9600 feet! It will take a few days to acclimate. Our dog has a great personality, but is used to regular hikes or walks (trails are nearby). June in the Rockies may still have some snow melt-off on the peaks (the ski resort is nearby our home), temperatures are mild (65-75F in the daytime and 35-40F night), rivers are full. Some afternoon thunderstorms may occur although storms pass quickly, usually lasting only 30 minutes to two hours, trails may have some mud.

85. One Month in Connemara, Ireland

This is a last minute appeal for help. We are looking for a very dog and cat friendly pet and house sitter to mind our furry friends while we go away for a couple of weeks to visit family in the UK. We need someone who can walk our two boxer dogs, play with them in the garden, feed them and clean up after them in the garden. We also have three cats who need to be fed, let out of the house in the morning and back into the house in the evening. These are the most important issues, thereafter just generally keep the place tidy and secure. We are in rural Connemara, in the west of Ireland. Our house is a three bedroom bungalow set in a mature garden (half an acre). The house is pleasant with open fireplaces as well as oil fired central heating. Nearby there are beautiful beaches. Coral Beach is about 15 minutes walk from the house and is simply stunning. If you are a scuba diver you will be delighted with the opportunity to dive here. Galway city is 40 minutes drive away or 90 minutes on the bus. There are several a day from the town. The town is very small but very friendly we are in an Irish speaking community but this would not present a problem as visitors are always made to feel very welcome. English can be spoken fluently by almost everyone here. There are a couple of restaurants in the town, a few small grocery shops and a few great pubs. We live about 15 minutes walk away from the town.

86. One Month in Denmark

‘Happy’ needs a dog lover in Denmark this summer. Hello :) I'm looking for someone who will take care of Happy (1.5-year-old Labrador mix) and our terrace house. Someone who just loves dogs and is ready for a young dog with lots of energy. Must be a non-smoker. Must be able to stay during the whole period offered. Walk Happy at least twice a day (preferably three walks), feed him, give him water, go for long, nice walks so he can play with other dogs. Also water the plants and maybe vacuum clean now and then. Oh and mow the lawn if it grows. We live in a terrace house 12km north of Copenhagen. Easy access to public transport to CPH (Happy can come along too). We have a nice little garden that doesn't need a lot of attention. The area is pretty quiet. Lyngby and its surroundings is known as ‘The Green Area’ as there are a lot of nice places to walk and bike. If you promise to bring Happy, you can travel practically anywhere in Denmark. Happy is a very active dog and needs at least two hours exercise each day. He is VERY friendly and loving not to mention funny! Pretty good manners. He is able to be alone if you for instance go on a day trip but he should not be alone every day.

87. Two Months in Edinburgh, Scotland

House dog sitter Edinburgh district (semi-rural). Clearly sitter would need to be reliable, trustworthy, honest etc, and references would be required. All electric, oil fired central heating and hot water, and broadband internet will be provided free of charge. Telephone provided for local and national calls. House is not on bus route although you can take a subsidised taxi (£1) to the train station or make the two mile walk. The taxi service is good but this assignment might be more suitable for a car owner.

88. Three Months in Long Beach, New York, USA

House by beautiful surf beach, 45 minutes from Manhattan. We have a lovely home in Long Beach, NY, just a few blocks from the beach in one direction or the bay in the other direction. Our house and dog need a sitter. Are you able to house sit? Initially the time frame is March 1st 07 (this is flexible, if we have to we will wait to leave) till May 31st. So to be clear right now we want someone full time March 1st to May 31st. During the summer (June 1st to September 30th) ideally we would look for someone who is able to stay Monday to Friday afternoon, during this summer time if the person was interested I would offer to pay them $50 to tidy up after our weekend visits (make beds, vacuum, clean bathrooms and kitchen etc) so this may not suit you unless you had friends or parents to stay with in the summer weekends. From October 1st 07 we would once again be looking for someone to stay full time again. I am a vegan (not that you need to be) and a nice person. There would be no hassles, just a dog to be walked twice a day and fed. There are no plants or a pool, just a bit of lawn and a tree. We have lovely fresh air out here and the most beautiful 2.5-mile-long boardwalk. Please include your phone number if you are interested and email me a picture of yourself. Feed and walk dog twice a day, put garbage out regularly, maintain the house (call me to organise any repairs etc), pay utilities during the cold months. Nice 10-year-old large home with modern decor. Two minute drive from train station, 45 minute train ride from Manhattan. We are a handful of blocks from a lovely surf beach with boardwalk. Very nice small beach town. Lovely neighbours. Lots of restaurants and bars in the area with lots of summer time jobs. There will be a police background check done on any applicants. We are great friends with all of our neighbours so I don't want any parties or any behaviour that is going to annoy them. I do not want a sitter who has their own animals coming with them. I would like three references.

89. One Month in Budapest, Hungary

Cat sitter needed in the centre of Budapest. I'm looking for a non-smoking single house sitter to take care of my cat. I don't know the precise dates when I will be away yet, so the sitter should be prepared to share the flat with me for a while if the need arises. If the sitter wishes to leave the flat occasionally for two or three days to visit the rest of Hungary, the cleaning woman who lives downstairs can take care of the cat. The sitter should keep the flat clean (cleaning woman is available for less than four euros an hour) and take care of my cat (play with her at least half an hour a day). As she's an indoor cat, unfortunately keeping the litterbox tidy is also necessary. My flat is 48 square metres, with one living room and a lofted bedroom. While it's modestly furnished, it was totally renovated two years ago. It's on the 1st floor of a two floor building, inside an enclosed 100-year-old building complex surrounding the Direction of Railways. It’s near one of the main railway stations of Budapest, with public transport connections to everywhere and all sorts of facilities in the area. Despite this it's very silent, because the bedroom window faces the courtyard, which has some trees and plants, and the living room windows face a street with no traffic except the tram. The bathroom is all renovated and has a full bathtub. There's satellite TV and a computer that you can use with broadband internet access. My flat is a perfect base for visiting the city on foot, for enjoying the nightlife or visiting the surroundings. I know I probably won't find anyone for the whole two months, but each sitter has to stay at least three weeks, because a frequent turnover would be too much of a trauma for my cat. Keep in mind that Budapest can be really hot in summer, especially in August. Unfortunately there's no sea here, but there are open-air swimming pools, Turkish baths, and it's possible to swim in the Danube.

90. Two Weeks in The Lake District, England

I am looking for a house and dog sitter whilst we take a short holiday because our usual dog-minder is unavailable. Looking for non-smoking people prepared to care for the elderly boxer dog who has few needs apart from love and attention and of course feeding. Leaving you plenty of time to explore this beautiful part of England. The dog needs a walk every day but now does not go further than about two miles. She likes to laze in the garden and is a good companion. Caring for the house is pretty straightforward because most of the living is on the ground floor. Just keep it clean and tidy. Water the plants in the house and the garden and if the mood takes you, cut the grass. We live in rural South Lake District in a three bedroom detached property with fine views and walks nearby. Medium sized garden, terrace and fish pond, so not suitable for small children. The house is homely, quite well appointed. No neighbours closer than 200 yards. We are three miles from the nearest village and six miles from town. This is a rural area and although there is a daily bus service it is not very frequent. Ideally, access to your own car would be beneficial. A couple of bicycles are available for anyone interested in using them. For the right person we might be able to negotiate car transport for you. This would give you possibilities to visit the Yorkshire Dales national park which is10 miles east of here, the Forest of Bowland which is 15 miles south, the Lake District national park which is 10 miles north west and of course Scotland is only 50 miles away.

91. One Month Near Bathurst, NSW, Australia

Bathurst acres. Reliability, and must like animals, particularly dogs and birds. Care and feed two dogs, seven aviary birds, water garden and pot plants. Pump water from one tank to another occasionally (verbal and written instructions will be given). The house has three bedrooms, study with computer you can use if needed, reverse cycle air-conditioning, slow-combustion fire, and the usual mod-cons. Not good mobile phone reception so you can use our phone. Peaceful and quiet, panoramic views and a big veranda to sit and watch the wonderful sunsets on. It is on 126 acres of native bushland so is great for your own private bush walks. Plenty of birds and kangaroos. The location? We're 25 minutes drive from Bathurst, a city of around 30,000 people, about 200km west of Sydney. As well as all the usual shops, Bathurst has a wonderful fossil and mineral museum, motor-racing museum and race track, easy drive to Hill End goldfields, Jenolan Caves, Blue Mountains etc. We can supply maps if requested. Rural property and the pros and cons that go with living in the countryside.

92. One Month in Switzerland

Summer in Switzerland, re-advertised. We are looking for an active person(s) who likes animals and walking. Look after one very active 18-month-old border collie and two completely inactive cats. Hallie needs at least two one-hour walks a day plus a game of frisbee or a hike from three to five hours. After a hike she tends to sleep for the rest of the day (hurrah). She can be left in her crate for a few hours OK but not for a whole day. She is very good on the trains, trams, and boats. The Swiss are very dog friendly and allow dogs in 95% of restaurants. Outside shops there will always be places to leave a dog. We have a four bedroom house (actually five bedrooms but one bedroom now used as an office) 200m from the lake and 1km from a swimming location. Our house has four loos, three bathrooms (1 bath, others showers) and a small garden with barbecue and patio. The railway goes right past the house. The electric trains are very quiet and go past four times per hour. This is not heard inside the house. UK Sky TV including movies and sports. Exercise equipment including running machine and rowing machine. Broadband internet and wireless network on all four floors. All the mod cons: dishwasher, washing machine, dryer etc. We are 3km from Rapperswil which is a very pretty town on the lake known as the Swiss Riviera. Italian food is the norm but also good Swiss hotel-restaurants and also Indian, Mexican, and Chinese including takeaway. The Swiss footpath network goes right past the house which is located by the side of a vineyard. The footpaths (wanderwegs) are fantastic if you like hiking. A five minute walk takes you to the local railway station. It is two minutes into Rapperswil on a cheap Localnetz ticket or 40 minutes into Zurich. The cost is about 15 CHF for a day ticket which covers the whole of Zurich Kanton. Zurich is brilliant for a night out. Other places to see: Schwyz about one hour away, Luzern about two hours, loads of lakes and mountains from 30 minutes to two hours away. The local language is Swiss German. However, 99% speak English but appreciate efforts at German (High German is usually OK). French is also spoken by most people. I only speak English and get along fine. When I attempt German, the response is usually English :) Some country's citizens may require a visa.

93. Two Months in Oxfordshire, England

Edwardian house in Oxfordshire market town. Someone reliable, possibly retired or travelling. Must be a non-smoker. My dog is already farmed out for the time I'm away, although there may be a week at the end of May or beginning of June where he'd need looking after. He is a seven-year-old, friendly collie cross. Other than that, keeping the place looking lived in, watering a few plants inside and out if it gets hot. Wallingford is a small market town (population about 7,000) which has a lovely feel about it and lots going on. The house has three bedrooms (two doubles and a single) and is an Edwardian end of terrace. We have lovely neighbours. There is beautiful countryside on the doorstep and bus and rail links to bigger places (like Oxford) or my car may be available (but it is a manual or stick shift!) Our house has a chamber grand piano and tolerant neighbours, so this assignment would suit a classical musician. Wifi internet access is available. I'd really like someone who could stay for the whole eight weeks. There would be no payment unless you ended up looking after the dog for that week.

94. One Month in North Island, New Zealand

Kiwi paradise. A relaxed person or persons that enjoy the outdoors, will treasure our animals and enjoy the calm of the countryside. We have two cats that need feeding daily and lots of cuddles (one thinks he is human and may shower with you too.) We have a coop of chickens that need feed topped up once a week and we have two cows that just need their self regulating water troughs checked daily. This one hectare lifestyle block is a great base to explore from. Our renovated character cottage has one double bedroom and a nursery, kitchen, lounge, bathroom and great deck for entertaining. The property includes awesome views of the rolling pastures and an olive grove. We are 1.5km from the local village that includes several vineyards, child care, golf course, tennis and squash courts, recreation centre and rugby grounds. Our neighbours include a horse stud, farm and the picturesque (if somewhat shallow) Lake Waikare. It is a 40 minute drive to the major towns of Auckland, Pukekohe, Hamilton and Thames. Its also only one hour to either coast for a swim or surf (Raglan or the Coromandel) and 3.5 hours drive to ski at Whakapapa. You really need a car to get around. No smokers please. We are happy to send photos to interested parties.

95. One Month in Minneapolis – St Paul, USA

Raspberry-lovin, dog-crazy housesitter sought. Looking for an active-oriented housesitter to take care of my dog and house between June 20 and July 28. You need to be extremely responsible, honest, careful and committed to exercising my dog. Must be completely and absolutely a non-smoker. Walk or run the dog twice a day (morning and evening) with the option to take her to dog parks. Feed her and pet her. Water plants and lawn as needed. Mow small lawn every week (takes about 15 minutes maximum). Pick and eat so many raspberries that you'll die and go to heaven! (Optional.) Enjoy the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Sunny 1924 Craftsman bungalow with two bedrooms, office, living and dining, gourmet kitchen (gourmet as in high end appliances etc, it is not large). I have every cooking device you can imagine. Very quiet and safe neighborhood. Good neighbors. House alarm system if you would like to use it. Wireless internet and cable TV. Lovely patio and fenced backyard. We are four blocks to Mississippi River and miles of walking/biking trails. It is a 10 minute drive to either downtown St Paul or Minneapolis and miles to University of Minnesota. One block to busline. HUGE raspberry patch that fruits throughout July. Minneapolis and St Paul bars and restaurants are smoke-free. Neighborhood park is three blocks away with tennis courts, skate board park, shallow wading pool, baseball and softball fields, horseshoes, grills, playground etc. The YWCA is one mile away and has weekly or monthly memberships. Minneapolis and St Paul have huge farmer's markets. There are tons of museums, music venues, theaters etc. I would like the housesitter to come at least one day or more (if desired) before I leave to be introduced to my dog and be shown around (I leave June 21). If you would like to explore Minnesota for a weekend, I may be able to get one of the neighbors’ kids to look after the dog for a short time during your stay but if you plan to leave a lot, then this is not the right housesit for you. There is SO much going on in the summer in the Twin Cities, you will NOT be bored. (The map at right represents the middle of my zipcode, not the location of the house.)

96. Three Months in San Francisco, USA

Spring and fall house sitter/s wanted. We're looking for someone who will enjoy living in this beautiful area while we're away. The dates are March 23 to June 22 and August 8 to November 30. The odd split is because we'd like the couple who usually spends the summer here to be able to do so this year too. If either, or both, periods work for you we look forward to hearing from you. We're looking for someone to mind our house, forward mail and keep an eye on the automatic watering system and the houseplants. If you've a car, the whole San Francisco Bay area is easily explored from here. If you don't have a car, the bus is close and our house is only a few minutes walk from extensive hiking/biking trails. San Anselmo is a charming small town. Our house is on a hillside, so, along with lovely views, come quite a few stairs.

97. Ongoing Assignment in Michigan, USA

Birmingham, MI apartment and kitty need care. I am looking for an honest, trustworthy animal lover to watch my downtown Birmingham apartment and take care of my baby, Kitty. I am doing work in Petoskey, MI and would like to find someone to live at my apartment full to part time and take care of my cat. Stay at my apartment full to part time for an indefinite period. I am back and forth between Birmingham and Petoskey so we would work out details. Take care of my five-year-old cat named Kitty. Keep the apartment tidy and maybe clean up a bit. Great location in downtown Birmingham which is walking distance to everything: bars, shops, restaurants. Really great neighbors. There are four units in an old house with lots of character. Must like cats and want to take good care of my Kitty. Must be respectful, clean, and honest.

98. One Month in Norfolk, England

Someone responsible and reliable who will treat our home with care as if it were their own. Must be a non-smoker. To take care of our extremely friendly and sociable west highland terrier. This will involve feeding him twice a day, taking him for a good walk once a day and possibly a short one later, and giving him attention and affection. Also to take care of our house while we are away and water the garden. Our house is Grade ll listed, dating from the 17th century, having lots of exposed beams and high ceilings. in the front part of the house there is a drawing room with big inglenook fireplace, and a dining room, then a big kitchen/ living room extension at the back. This all has a very spacious open feel. Upstairs there is a master bedroom with French doors opening onto a balcony, with views of the river and steps down to the garden. The bedroom leads into a dressing room which leads into an en suite with roll top bath, double shower, two basins, loo and bidet. There is a guest bedroom with own shower, basin and loo, a second sitting room/ study upstairs, with double sofa bed, and an attic bedroom with two single beds and shower, suitable for children. The house overlooks the River Waveney and the water meadows beyond, and has a good sized paved garden, also overlooking the river. We are situated in a lovely old market town at the top end of Suffolk, on the east coast of England, being on a street two minutes away from the shops and facilities and seven minutes from the railway station, where trains run every two hours to London, Liverpool Street. We are surrounded by beautiful Suffolk countryside and 20 minutes by car from the sea at Southwold or Walberswick, which are both exceptionally unspoilt places. Also we are only about a 40 minute drive from the equally stunning north Norfolk coast. We are in a rural setting, so although there are good restaurants, a delicatessen, good food shops and supermarkets, and lots of lovely places to visit, it is not like living in London or a big city. The nearest city is Norwich which is about 30-40 minutes away by car or bus.

99. Assignments in DC, USA

Cabin restoration in a rural neighborhood. Responsible couple or single with the energy for two hysterical female coonhounds. You can do your daytripping with a snug cabin to come home to every night as long as the hounds get lots of attention when you are here. Caring for two goofy dogs. Basic housekeeping, mowing only when needed, hugging hounds and chatting with neighbors. Water plants, collect mail etc. Daytrippers will love spending time here! Small cabin-home, simple upkeep. We are 90 minutes from DC's museums, Baltimore's Inner Harbor, and Philadelphia's history and art scene. So much to do! Amish and Mennonite culture, national battlegrounds, parks, theater etc. Also, the Susquehanna River, Chesapeake Bay and numerous rivers to paddle. Use of kayaks and canoes at the local nature center nearby, better yet, bring your own! Hiking like crazy on the AT, PA's incredible mountains. It's why I moved here: to have a base camp near so much without the long drives. Coonhounds are big and energetic dogs who never grow up. They are total couch potatoes inside but need a good romp morning and evening. This community is an old hunting/fishing neighborhood with a mix-match of cabins, nice homes and what-nots. It's totally a hoot. Must be prepared to follow Amish buggies at a very slow pace. As a painter/writer and lecturer, I often have drop-ins to see my work or just visit, so good manners and a pleasant, welcoming attitude are appreciated. I have many opportunities throughout the year to house sit and would like to offer this home for free board to anyone wishing to explore the PA/MD/DC. Great way for folks from far off to save on lodging, but you will have to rent a car. A few nosey neighbors, but everyone is nice enough.

100. One Month in Dublin, Ireland

Dog lover wanted to share house in lovely Dublin village home. This is a slightly unusual housesit, but it could be a great opportunity for the right person or people! I live near the seaside village of Malahide in north county Dublin and require a live in dog sitter to care for my rather large but very low maintenance dogs during the day. The couple I share a house with, who normally keep an eye on our dogs while I'm at work, are going on holiday in late January for three weeks. I would like a person or two to share the house with me while they're gone, mostly so as to avoid burglars, and keep an eye on and maybe play with the dogs a wee bit while I'm earning the daily crust. I've put the dates that the other housemates are away but the sitter would be very welcome to stay longer or shorter, depending on what suited best. Not many! The sitter wouldn't have to stay in all day every day, obviously, but I'd hope that he or she would enjoy living here and be willing to keep half an eye on the dogs while he or she was in the building, as they are used to having people around off and on throughout the day. I will be leaving for work, I work in local government, each weekday morning at 8am, and will be back around 6pm in the evening. One of the neighbours has kindly agreed to feed the dogs at lunch, so I was hoping that the sitter wouldn't mind walking them in the afternoon. That would really be his or her only responsibility. But really I'd like a sitter here off and on during the day so the dogs don't feel abandoned (they are rescued dogs) and so that they don't have to spend pretty much the whole day in the back garden without any company. You don't have to cook (unless you want to!) or clean or maintain the garden or anything like that. The house I live in is a comfortable, fairly big detached house (four bedrooms, two living rooms, three bathrooms, a big kitchen, an utility room, a dining room, and so on) in a pleasant upscale village suburb north of Dublin city. You would have your own living room, bedroom (obviously!) and bathroom, and access to the rest of the house. There are many armchairs, a fireplace, cable TV, offroad parking, internet access, a front garden and a big back garden, all the standard mod cons like central heating, a landline telephone and a washer/dryer, and plenty of elbow room. The neighbours are friendly, mostly academics and business people with grown up children. The house is 10 minutes walk from the beach, five minutes walk from a castle with hundreds of acres of forested grounds, a mile from the centre of the pretty and lively village, and less than an hour from Dublin city centre by bus, road or light rail. Normally house sitters have the house to themselves but I will be sharing it with him or her. But I'm working during the day and pretty busy otherwise, plus there's the fact that you'd have your own living room etc, so hopefully that's okay. I've lived in shared houses all my life and am very easy going. Smokers are welcome providing they don't mind smoking out on the porch. Food, if the sitter doesn't mind vegetarian food, is included. The sitter is welcome to cook and eat meat providing he or she buys and cooks it his- or herself. Household bills are included. If you have any questions, please let me know. Thank you for reading this far!

Just wanted to say you are the best housesitting site out there ( Sitter)

Just wanted to say you are the best housesitting site out there, we have been members since we started sitting in 2013 along with other sites, and I love how MMH has always been the same, we have had some tremendous sits and the website is one of the easiest to use, (probably because it is not fiddled with too much (if it ain't broke, don't fix it). The membership fee is amazing, please carry on with all your wonderful work. Thank you so much, it is very reassuring in this world of fast moving technology to find something you can rely on always. All the very best.

House sitting has been a very positive experience for us ( Owner)

House sitting has been a very positive experience for us on the whole, the odd glitch but over 15 years hardly surprising! With many animals and an off grid farm we have attracted lots of different folk and several are still in touch with us as friends. We have also had both young and more mature but all embraced the peace and beauty of our location. Having house sitters is a lesson in trust and we have learnt lots and would say our property and animals have been cared to our standards of not better! If we come across behaviour we find unacceptable we deal with it and come to resolution that suits both parties. Housesitters and volunteers have given us the opportunity to travel, work and deal with family bereavement in another country. I would use the word invaluable especially having so many animals. Thankyou for setting up this valuable service.
