280 year old Irish Farm House

About this assignment

Preferably a cat loving person or couple, who can safely light fires and don't mind the countryside and a little bit of gardening and mowing.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Feed cats, clean up after cats!, look after house, water poly tunnel, mow the garden, water the outside garden beds, should it be required. Basically relax and enjoy.

What are the good features of the property and location

Our house is located midway between Cork and Killarney (centres of both are approx 40 minutes away) The town of Kenmare is also around 40 minutes away. Train station (to Killarney and Dublin) is 20 minutes about. We are 3 miles west of Macroom (a busy market town with a market, supermarkets, cinema, theatre, cafes, shops, library) on the outskirts of the village of Clondrohid.

The house and large garden are surrounded by farmland with views across to the mountains that form the Cork/Kerry border. The village shop/post office and two pubs are within 10 minutes walk.

The house is full of character but needs energy to look after. The central heating and hot water run from a solid fuel stove and there are additional electric radiators and a wood burning stove for cosy evenings in the sitting room. Familiarity with safely lighting fires is very important.

Cooking on the hob of the solid fuel stove is possible and an electric hob and oven are also available.

If you'd like to bring children that's no problem. We have two nine year old boys and the garden is designed to keep them entertained.

The cat needs love and company, basically a lap 24/7 would suit him nicely. Please note that the cat likes to hunt, a lot!, *rabbits, birds, shrews etc.) and likes to show off his conquests to us humans, usually at the foot of the stairs.

The gardens, depending upon the weather, may require a mow. The area is abou 1 3/4 acres including a polytunnel,which may require watering, a fruitcage, grass areas and veg beds.

Beyond that we just ask you to look after the house as if it were your own and relax and enjoy your time here.

Please Note that we do not have a television. However, we do have a PC, which we use to stream "tv" and wireless broadband.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

This is an old house with some electric radiators but mostly solid fuel powered central and hot water heating. There is also a wood burning stove in the snug. The ability to safely light and maintain fires is a must. Cat likes to hunt, and brings lots of gifts into the house. He can, and does leave a bloody mess!
