House Sitter(s) Wanted — Historic Medina Home, Fes 1 August – 15 September 2026

We're looking for a warm, responsible house sitter (a couple would be ideal!) to look after our beautiful home nestled in the heart of the Fes Medina while we're away.

What you'll be doing: The main tasks are simple but important — watering the plants twice daily (we have an automatic system for most, but some need a little hands-on love, including a few indoor ones) and feeding our two friendly terrace cats. They're outdoor cats, so no fur on the sofa!
We just ask that you keep the house tidy and leave it as you found it. We've had the odd mixed experience in the past, so we genuinely appreciate sitters who treat our home with care and respect.

A word about the heat. We want to be upfront: Fes is HOT in summer. We're talking 45°C outside at peak. That said, inside the house it stays around a very manageable 28°C — it's a dry heat, and as long as you stay out of the midday sun, it's perfectly comfortable. One bedroom has air conditioning for those warmer nights. This is truly a role for sun-lovers!

About the home: Our four-storey, two-bedroom Medina house is full of character. It has ADSL internet (10 Mbps), hot water, and a fully equipped kitchen. A couple of things to be aware of: the bathroom is one floor down from the bedrooms, and the stairs are steep and uneven — it's not suitable for anyone with mobility issues. Just being transparent!

The location You'd be living in the middle of the Fes Medina — the largest medieval pedestrianised city in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's one of those rare places where it genuinely feels like time has stood still. Magical, exotic, and truly unforgettable.

The dates: We need someone for the full stretch — roughly 1st August (flexible up to 10th August) through to 15th September 2026. We do need someone sleeping at the house every single night, so please only apply if you can commit to the entire period. That said, you're very welcome to arrive early or stay on afterwards to explore Morocco at your leisure!

The practical bits:
* We cover the water bill
* Internet is €15/month (shared cost)
* Electricity: one bedroom has A/C — it's efficient and costs roughly $1/night. We ask sitters to cover their own usage (easy to monitor via the meter just outside)
* We ask for a €500 refundable deposit, returned on departure minus any bills. We've been let down before and find this creates a foundation of mutual trust — we're happy to share references from previous sitters who've had a wonderful time!

If you're drawn to history, culture, and a truly one-of-a-kind experience, we'd love to hear from you. We're happy to share more photos and have a chat over WhatsApp

Please only apply if you can commit to the full dates — thank you!

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Your day-to-day will look something like this:

Plants — A twice-daily water for the terrace plants. There aren't many, and we do have an automatic system, but on extreme days with 45°C heat they appreciate a little extra love on top!

Cats — We have two gorgeous cats who live on the terrace. One (Siamese 2 years old) is a homebody and will be your constant companion, the other (calico 10 years old) prefers to pop in during the day and disappear by evening. You'll just need to make sure they're fed daily and that the neighbourhood roaming cats don't sneak in and steal their food — they can be cheeky!

The house — We ask that someone is home every night, and that the house is kept clean and tidy throughout your stay — especially for when we return!

And while it's absolutely not a requirement... we do have a soft spot for the odd photo of the cats and plants while we're away. No pressure, but we won't say no!

What are the good features of the property and location

Step into living history
Imagine waking up in a 300-year-old Moroccan dar, throwing open the shutters, and stepping out into streets that have barely changed in centuries. That's your daily reality here. We're right in the heart of the Fes Medina — a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the great medieval cities of the world, and honestly one of those places you have to experience to believe. Oh, and the food? Incredible, and wonderfully cheap!
We've welcomed many house sitters over the years — a good few have even come back for more! We can't upload testimonials directly to this platform, but we're very happy to put you in touch with previous sitters so you can hear firsthand what it's really like.

The house
Our home is a traditional Moroccan dar — "dar" simply means house in Arabic (a riad is larger and has a garden). We've lovingly restored it using traditional materials, but this is our home, not a museum. You'll find a warm mix of old and new: hand-painted zelij mosaic floors, cedar ceilings, decorative lanterns and wooden doors sitting comfortably alongside modern comforts. It's full of character, in the best possible way.

A few things worth knowing: the floors are uneven, the stairs are irregular, and things occasionally work a little differently than you might expect — that's part of the charm! We're always on hand to help you get your bearings.
The house has 4 levels and 38 stairs in total.

Ground & courtyard level: Kitchen (oven, gas hob, fridge/freezer, full utensils), living room with sofas and armchairs, a salon that doubles as our bread-making space when we're home (we run a small micro-bakery — but don't worry, it's all ours when we're away!), and a separate toilet.

Bathroom: A lovely walk-in shower, one floor below the bedrooms.

Bedroom 1 — cosy single/double: A comfortable sofa bed that opens into a double, bedside cabinet, desk, small wardrobe, and windows overlooking both the lane and courtyard. Traditional cedar ceiling and zelij floors throughout.

Bedroom 2 — the big one: A king-size bed, Moroccan sofa with cushions, wooden wardrobe, bedside lamps, and a large window with wooden shutters looking out over the courtyard. There's also a single bed in the room we use for storage — just ignore that one! Same beautiful traditional details throughout

Towels are provided

The terrace
South-facing and sitting on a hill, our rooftop terrace has sweeping views over the Medina and Fort Sud — genuinely spectacular, especially at golden hour. There's a table and chairs, a pergola for shade, an olive tree, and a good collection of plants. It's a beautiful spot to start the morning with a coffee before heading out to explore.

WiFi
We have reliable wifi throughout the house at a solid 10 Mbps (fast by Moroccan standards!). The 17th-century walls are thick and characterful, which does mean the signal can be a little patchy in some corners — but you'll find a good spot.

Getting here & getting around

We're right in the middle of the old town — and yes, the Medina is a labyrinth. Getting lost is genuinely part of the fun, but we'd recommend saving our location to your phone before you arrive!

We're one street from Dar Gnaua (listed on Google Maps). You can also find us on What3Words: ///snap.peachy.actors or ///holidays.ripples.escapes
All the main sights are within a 5–15 minute walk. Free offline smartphone apps make navigating the Medina easy, and taxis and public transport for further afield are just a few minutes away.

Parking: We live in the world's largest pedestrianised medieval city, so the nearest covered car park is a 15-minute walk and costs around €4/night.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

A few important things before you apply
Please only get in touch if you're able to COVER THE FULL PERIOD — we really do need someone for the entire stay, every night.

This is also a home that rewards the adventurous! The stairs are steep and uneven, the lanes are narrow, and the house has plenty of character in all senses of the word. For that reason, it's probably not the right fit if you have any mobility issues, cat allergies, or are prone to feeling claustrophobic in tight spaces.

One practical note: our kitchen runs on gas, so you'll occasionally need to swap out the gas bottle (up to 20kg). We have a trolley to make it easier — but you will need to be able to manage this independently. Gas bottle lasts months and costs less than €5

Finding us on the map

Just a small note — the map attached to this listing uses the address of a nearby hotel to pinpoint our general location. We're right in the heart of the Medina, close to Riad Dar Bensouda (findable on Google Maps). We'll make sure you have everything you need to find us easily before you arrive!

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.
