About this assignment

We are looking for experienced dog and cat lovers (must be a couple) to care for our 2 sister rescue dogs and rescue cat from about 25 August to 2 October, 2026. September is one of the nicest times to visit Fiji! The weather is usually starting to warm up so lots of sunny days and very little rain.

Frankie & Flora will be about 4 years old in August, they have beautiful personalities, super affectionate and a great guard dogs! Kitty will be about 2 years old and is mischievous and independent. They all get along fabulously! I walk the dogs every day to the beach.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Primarily just look after the dogs! Feed, walk, play and cuddle!

We already have a gardener who comes fortnightly to brush-cut and do general garden maintenance. We also have a cleaner who comes fortnightly. (We like to support the local communities). But general garden and house maintenance would be expected eg water the garden and keep the house clean

What are the good features of the property and location

We live in a quiet safe area surrounded by rainforest and near the beach. Our nearest neighbor is a 5 minute walk away! We have a house and a guest cottage. As we only need someone for about 6 weeks, our sitters stay in the guest cottage, but have free use of the house. The cottage has a bathroom, kitchen, king-size bed and sofas. and a great deck. The property is 5 acres overlooking the Koro Sea.

We have Starlink Internet access which is very fast and reliable.

We are a 15 minute drive to Savusavu town where you can buy your groceries, organic fruit and vegetables and fresh seafood. There are also some wonderful eateries, a great Yacht Club, a doctor, vet, hospital and library. There is lots of exploring to be done on the island of Vanua Levu – waterfalls, beaches and reefs, local villages, mountains and rainforests.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

House sitters MUST be fit. We live about 80 metres above sea level which means its a hilly walk (about 1km) to get down to the beach. Our daily walk is usually 5-7km and the beach makes it worth it!

We are ‘on-the grid’ but not reliably! Our water supply is from a spring – it is very drinkable and there is plenty of it but occasionally it just stops or peters out for no reason, or it turns brown and undrinkable after heavy rains. We have 2 backup water tanks with pump for these situations.

We are on town power but occasionally there are planned and unplanned shutdowns. Due to the recent fuel crisis, we installed a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) so power outages do not affect us. We also have a backup generator we can run.

Due to the water and power systems, our house-sitter would ideally be fairly practical.

We have a Suzuki Jeep but it is not insured. In the past, we have given our sitters the option of a short-term insurance (at their expense - costs about F$400) or a "Bend it you Mend it" condition. If you choose not to use the car, there are about 5 buses running daily to town from the main road, about 10 minute walk (about F$4 per trip). It is also possible to rent cars in town.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

Testimonials

SavuSavu sit

Hwei-Ying and Neal were a pleasure to sit for, and their two dogs, Jarley and Dobby, a delight. Our sit was for most of September 2018, and the location of the home overlooking the Pacific is just beautiful. It's an elevated position, with a deck to sit back on, facing the ocean. A reef protecting a swimming hole that was used in the making of Australian survivor (Fiji) episode earlier in 2018 is a 15 minute walk away. Our hosts gave us plenty of information relating to the area, dogs and requirements of country living before they left. They were extremely helpful, kept in touch while they were away, and made our stay a very enjoyable one. Highly recommended. Michael &Veronica
