Caro is very good natured - he loves company
Responsible sitters, preferably a couple, good with dogs, and keen to experience all that Rio de Janeiro and the Brazilian lifestyle have to offer. Preferable too, to be contactable via e-mail or Whatsapp so that we can keep in touch during their stay.
Looking after our house and dog - Caro, an elderly Alsatian-type mongrel who is very friendly and placid. And have a fun time whilst you're here !
The house is in Niteroi, across the bay from Rio. Niteroi is way safer than Rio, but close enough to make all the sites of Rio within reach.
Fabulous location and standard of accommodation, with all creature comforts and great view of the bay. In a very safe location and within walking distance of local amenities and transport. Just 400 meters from the beach, with a supermarket, pharmacy and lots of bars and restaurants.
Niteroi itself is something of a dormitory city and doesn't have the range of facilities and culture that Rio can offer. In addition to the good range of local restaurants, other local beaches are just a bus ride away, and Niteroi now has two arts cinemas showing current or recent releases (usually sub-titled).
Weather in Rio/Niteroi is good most of the year. Although a maritime climate, and thus less predictable, most of the year has equitable temperatures for Europeans and North Americans - but January and February can be hot and sticky. The Rio winter (June - August) is like a British summer, weather wise. It never gets cold - indeed, the house has no heating, only air conditioning.
The house has lots of space; 4 bedrooms; 6 bathrooms; a separate granny extension; a large kitchen that suits those who like to cook; two terraces with fabulous views over the bay; gas barbecue; and a comfortable lounge with satellite TV and all the streaming services. There's fast internet throughout the house. A gardener comes once a week and a cleaner one day a week.
We have also a number of local friends and neighbours, including an on-call vet, that speak English, and who are at hand to help should you need any help, and to step in should it be needed.
We have also prepared a comprehensive house guide, to help you settle in.
The house is on a hillside and there are around 50 steps from the street to the house - but there is now an elevator from street to house. Moving around the property, you don't need to be a mountain goat, but you do need to be mobile.
Speaking a little Portuguese or Spanish helps, but these days lots of people get by on English alone.
Living costs (food, transport, eating out) are low because the Brazilian currency is currently weak.
Niteroi, and especially the district around the house, is safe - we usually walk to places nearby such as the shops, restaurants and beaches, and have never had a problem. The house itself has security cameras and other precautions, and so security at home is not an issue. When travelling further afield, especially on the Rio side of the bay, standard precautions (no bling, don't dress and act like a gringo tourist, don't wander into dodgy areas etc) will help reduce the risk - remember, millions of Cariocas (Rio residents) go about their business every day, carrying iPhones, laptops, wallets etc and do not have problems.
Being the tropics, mosquitoes are an ever-present risk, but the usual precautions will serve you well; the house has many features to limit exposure (including nets on windows, beds etc).
Although we have a car, we ask house sitters not to use it – driving in Rio and Niteroi is tricky and not for the faint-hearted: it would be easy to get into difficulties, especially if you do not speak Portuguese (for example, there's a minority of drivers without licences or insurance). Instead, there is good public transport, making all local amenities and Rio highlights within easy reach. Uber is also widely available, reliable and cheap in both Rio and Niteroi. And local amenities are within walking distance.
No, sorry.

Caring, gracious owners, wonderful home and pets in a fascinating part of the world
We recently had the honor of caring for Joe & Georgia’s wonderful home and their delightful dogs. They made us feel very welcome from the very start and communication back and forth was excellent. We were greeted with big smiles and a home cooked meal after a long travel day. They also went the extra mile by setting us up with tickets to some of Rio’s must do’s during Carnival, which we thoroughly enjoyed. They are used to having house and pet sitters and have the most comprehensive guide to their home, garden and dogs that we have ever seen in our eight years of house and pet sitting. Everything we could possibly need to know was included and the additional information about getting around and places to visit, both in Rio and the surrounding area was priceless. With the addition of swift and regular contact via Whats App we have to say that ‘they know how to set their sitters up for success’. Niteroi itself was a quieter haven than bustling Rio de Janeiro across the bay and we enjoyed exploring both. Being able to stroll along the sea front and choose from a variety of nearby restaurants just a ten minute walk from ‘home’ was a bonus, as was the mangoes, bananas, papaya and avocado straight from the garden. If you get the chance to sit for Joe & Georgia do not hesitate, they are gracious hosts, well organized and great communicators, with a delightful home in a fascinating part of the world. The dogs are all great characters too, from young Runi who is a bit of a wuss, to Minnie the diminutive boss dog, we miss them all.

Hard to Beat
We had a great stay sitting for Georgia & Joe in their lovely home. We became very fond of their dogs. Joe & Georgia are interesting & warm people who are very experienced & prepared for sitters, with an extensive file of information on the house, dogs, & local attractions. Their cleaner & gardener visited weekly. We can't imagine anyone doing better! They couldn't have been more helpful at settling us in & helping us leave, including arranging a car to & from the airport. We also went out to dinner & had a fun time. We made the most of exploring the local bars & restaurants of Niteroi which are a short walk away, & travelling into Rio to visit many tourist sites including Copacabana, Lapa, Sugar Loaf & Christo. We got by without speaking Portugese, had no safety/security incidents & travelled around cheaply with Uber using a local sim card that Joe set-up for us. This house sit will be hard to beat for us!

Outstanding
We had a great stay at Niteroi/Rio de Janeiro, with lovely dogs. We will have great memories of our stay: Rio is of course a "world class destination", with its Sugarloaf, the Corcovado, Copacabana, etc. But just as important, the house in Niteroi is very well located, convenient for all these visits, and for going to the Atlantic beaches on the Niterói side. The house is very comfortable and has excellent facilities. There are lots of bars and restaurants close to the house, and transportation in Niteroi and to Rio is easy, with quite low prices (bus, Uber, taxis). Our hosts were very friendly, and helpful, with good advice and guidance about the house and for visiting this very charming place ! We had a very friendly relationship with this interesting and open minded couple, fluent in English, Portuguese and some French. They also provided a local SIM card and set up a Whatsapp group so that we could keep in touch and resolve any questions or problems straightaway. The dogs are cheerful, well behaved, and live independently and happy on a large plot around the house. The dogs liked to be with us at breakfast and in the evening; we loved them, and they enjoy the company. We had a good time together !

Delightful visit near Rio
We were in the happy opportunity to spend 4 wonderful weeks house / dog sitting in Niteroi, a beautiful town in front of RIo de Janeiro. Joe & Georgia couldn’t have been any nicer. We had everything we needed, including a smartphone with a local number and a comprehensive house guide with a lot of extra information for travelling around. The house was safe and comfortable airconditionned. It’s easy to get a good contact with the 5 nice dogs. So, if you want to have a delightful stay near Rio and you are a doglover, we can recommend this housesit very much

Very safe house sit in Brazil
We spent 5 weeks at Joe and Georgia’s very comfortable house in Niteroi with a lift from ground level to the house which has all the amenities you would need. Joe and Georgia were very friendly and helpful and showed us the local area. The dogs are so lovely and affectionate and are very obedient. Joe was very communicative and there is a comprehensive manual of instructions detailing every aspect of the house sit and surrounding areas. When visiting Rio we took a quick cheap Uber taxi to the catamaran or ferry stations which are not far away and the ride across the bay is 20 mins or so. The local beach, shops, supermarket and restaurants are a 10 min walk from the house. We are so pleased we did this house sit which enabled us to experience Brazil and the wonderful views of Rio, going on the bus to other places and beaches and meeting the friendly people there.

Tropical Paradise
We spend four amazing weeks in Georgia and Joe's house, enjoying the company of their dogs Jana, Caro, Minnie, Laika and Runí. We arrived a couple of days before Georgia and Joe left and we could not have asked for a warmer welcoming and introduction to the dogs, house and area. The comunication whilst them being abroad, was always easy and quick. The house is more than confortable and with a beautiful view of the nearby waterfront. The area is really safe and very well conected, in order to go to Rio or various other places. We can definitly recommend accepting the opportunity for a House Sitting with Georgia & Joe.

Perfect
I spent 5 wonderful weeks in this wonderful home with 5 wonderful dogs. I arrived to a warm reception from Joe and Georgia and they made sure my every need was met for the sit. The 5 dogs were a joy to be around, not demanding and a laugh with every turn. I felt completely safe within the surroundings of Niteroi and downtown Rio and I would recommend this opportunity to any house sitter wanting to see the most beautiful city in the world!
