About this assignment
We are hoping to find a friendly and non smoking couple who will take good care of our property and animals. Single sitters are welcome to apply but as our property is rural, having a friend along is recommended. A driver’s license is needed.
We appreciate sitters who are socially independant but good at keeping in contact with us.
The property is rural and so it is helpful if sitters are practically oriented and familiar with small home maintenance chores just in case something should arise.
We always write to every applicant several times to let them know where we are in the process of choosing a sitter.
What responsibilities are required of the house sitter
Feed the dogs 2 x day, brush long haired Carrie a few times a week.
The dogs exercise themselves and do not need walking but love to follow along if you go on a walk yourself.
Water plants. 5 inside and some outside in pots on a small patio, this takes about 5 minutes. I’m happy to send a foto of the plants so you can see how many.
Check mail in town 1 x week.
Sleep on the premises each night.
Take rubish and recycling to disposal in town.
Keep the house reasonably clean & tidy.
Keep us informed of how the animals and property are doing.
If any repairs need to be done, inform us.
Add water treatment to tank once during the sit, check water tank level and top up if needed. Access to this is located in the house.
We have 2 properties next to each other - please see first foto - the higher property is empty when we’re not there but we ask that you check it once a week. About a 3 minute walk, nice to do with the dogs. This is also where the plants for watering are located.
What are the good features of the property and location
The property is located just outside of Adra on 3 hectares of terraced almond trees on a mountainside overlooking the sea. Surrounded by mountains, the views to every direction are spectacular.
There are several beautiful beaches in Adra and many more just up and down the coastline. Adra is a unique Spanish town. It is traditional and with very little tourism but also modern with many shops, cafe's and activities. The locals are extremely friendly and helpful. The school teaches English so many locals are familiar with the language even though they are shy to speak it. They also make a great effort to understand our poor attempts at Spanish.
There are many possibilities for hiking on the mountain and other activities.
Airports are Almeria and Malaga and there is a bus terminal in town.
We are near several nature reserves as well as Granada and the Alpujarra.
Our smart tv is not hooked up to tv channels but has computer access for film streaming. Internet service is with Starlink and speed is fast.
A car is provided for transportation.
We are on city electricity and have a reliable water supply from our own well. All amenities are provided - washing machine, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, etc.
The house is newly renovated with one bedroom, 2 bathrooms and terrace off the kitchen upstairs. Downstairs, there is a family room with additional TV and sofas and shaded terrace. A large dining table in front of the terrace doors makes a good workspace. Printer is located here. There is an additional bedroom and bathroom on this level as well as the laundry room. What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment
The location of the property is rural and requires a 15 minute drive to reach town. The road up the mountainside is paved and city maintained until our driveway. The driveway is a dirt road of 200 meters which can be navigated with a regular car. It is partially paved and we have it maintained as needed.
Heating/cooling units are provided in the bedroom and main living space where there is also a wood burning stove. Wood is provided in the winter. The house is well insulated and easy to keep cool/warm.

Our time in Adra in Maggie and Stephen's house was wonderful! In a place with a beautiful view over the sea and very quiet without ambient noise. Fully furnished (everything you could possibly need) atmospheric with nice beautiful things around you. You will really feel at home there. The dogs are big but behave very well. We got used to each other very quickly, it was nice to have them around you. The transfer went smoothly, it was clean and everything was well described. Stephen and Maggie were always available if there were any questions. The only downside is that you always have to drive down by car to go somewhere. The road is too steep to cycle. Relaxing, peaceful sit with stunning views
Having chatted to Maggie & Steffen several times over a couple of years we finally met up (due to dates) and then I was able to confirm a sit for them. Lovely, friendly and very welcoming couple. The dogs Sam and Carrie are really sweet and very easy to care for. The property has stunning sea & mountain views. Modern, comfortable and clean. Hope to be back again soon.

Outstanding House Sitting Experience in Spain
My husband and I had the pleasure of house/pet sitting for Steffen and Maggie at their beautiful property in Spain. We fell in love with the ocean view, remarkable weather, great food, and hiking in the surrounding mountains. From the moment we arrived, Stephen and Maggie extended such warmth and hospitality. They generously took the time to show us around, ensuring we were familiar with all aspects of the property and that we had access to everything we might need during our stay, including a reliable vehicle that we used during our entire stay. One of the highlights of our time in Spain was the opportunity to care for their lovely dogs. These furry companions added an extra layer of joy to our experience, and their sweet nature was a true testament to the loving environment created by our hosts. Nice people, nice place.
Having looked after Maggie & Steffan's place in Denmark a few years ago, I was delighted when they recently asked me to 'sit' their new place in southern Spain. Not sure if I would have driven from the north of England to the south coast of Spain for anyone else, it's always a risk....you don't know how the people are, or the house, or the animals, and it could be you go a long way to a place you really don't want to be at, or problematic animals etc. However, I knew Maggie & Steffan would look after me, see me right, and the house would be something special. I was right on all counts. They made sure I was comfortable, and familiar with everything. The house is a beautiful, modern place with a view to die for. Spectacular sunrises and sunsets most days. Total privacy, and very VERY peaceful. The small road that takes you to their place doesn't really go anywhere so rarely do you see a vehicle, and anyway it's far enough from the house that you can't hear it. The house was impeccable, as I knew it would be, and stands 3 miles up a hillside overlooking the Med. On a clear day you can see the mountains over in Africa. That's looking south, to the north is the beautiful Sierra Nevada, rising up to 11,000ft. When I was there it was snow-capped. The town of Adra is at the bottom of their road and has all the conveniences you could wish for, including 3 supermarkets. Apart from town, the roads are in great condition and virtually traffic free, ideal for me as I'm a keen cyclist. There are 4 very nice outside moggies that occasionally turn up to be fed in the evening, and that's all you have to do....that and sit in the sun with a cold one. Perfect house-sit for me. We really enjoyed sitting for Maggie and Steffen who are very nice owners. They are organized, friendly, and take care of their sitters by preparing very well everything before the incoming date. Their Spanish house as well is beautiful, well equipped, confortable, well inside designed, and, even more, with an amazing 180° sea view !
