About this assignment

We are looking for a house sitter from Friday 16 till Saturday 24 August.
You will need to be a non-smoker and love pets.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Look after a big mackerel coat tom cat who can be a bit moody (what cat isn't??) and a 34 years old Greek spur thigh tortoise.
Also keep an eye on the house plants and water them a bit if they are dry, as well as making sure the bird pond is always topped up, as it doubles up as the tortoise's bath tub and the cat's outside drinking fountain...

What are the good features of the property and location

North Portsmouth, Paulsgrove near Cosham.
Not far from the Hampshire countryside. The house is between 2 train stations, Cosham and Portchester, and is ideally situated for people who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life: it is near the countryside and in a quiet residential area.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

The place is a three bedroom house with a garden. It can accommodate one person or a couple. We recently purchased a new Ikea bed for our guest bedroom, a single that can be pulled open into a double, very comfortable.
If you don't have a vehicle, you can use the bus system which works very well. From the shops just down the street, there are buses every 10 minutes to central Portsmouth. The 2 nearby train stations can take you to Chichester (where there is a great museum to see: The Pallant Gallery, and a stunning cathedral) or Brighton, and to Southampton, but also to London and Gatwick Airport in a couple of hours.
The area is rich in history as this is where D-Day was organised: there are several museums around dedicated to D-Day, as well as a pub called the Churchillian, on the cliff north of town, with display cabinets full of Churchill's belongings... Portsmouth is a naval town with loads of museums to visit along the docks, including HMS Victory, and the newly opened Mary Rose museum. City Museum is wonderful to visit, and there is also the house where Charles Dickens was born.
We will require references verifiable before the start of the house sitting, and a copy of your ID documents, such as a passport.

A good stay in Portsmouth

I enjoyed looking after Hobbes the cat and Tortoise. Hobbes is an easy cat to look after. He has a very definite personality. The house is close to public transport so it is easy to explore Portsmouth. There is a small shopping centre within a convenient 5 minute walk and a larger Tesco and Aldi about 10 minutes away.
