About this assignment
Dates we need sitter(s) here - Approx December 7-20, 2025 arrival time flexible between 7-8th.
We would like a responsible person or couple to enjoy our home while we are away. In return we would like them to watch the property, and do light house-keeping while also taking care of our new rescue fur baby, named Finley. (Our previous dog, Jack passed away 2 years ago and is mentioned in our testimonials). We've only had Finley about a month and he's still settling in and getting used to men (he prefers female humans and is very suspicious of men - but not aggressive, just avoids them). As a newer rescue, we hope that's better by December, but just in case we prefer female applicants right now. He's completely housebroken though, and a sweet and playful pup, just still a little anxious especially around men.
What responsibilities are required of the house sitter
Besides managing Finley the pup, light housekeeping and cleaning, going to mailbox, and monitoring & adding chemicals to hot tub. Blowing off leaves on patio, deck and walkways. Water a few houseplants. Just generally looking over the property daily to watch for any issues that arise.
What are the good features of the property and location
Nice, private home within 1 mile of restaurants and shopping located in Cullman, Alabama, a charming small Southern town known for it's southern hospitality. Cullman is a thriving small town with an up and coming food and craft brewery scene. Great location 10 minutes from Lewis Smith Lake, a 21,000 acre lake rated as one of the cleanest in the U.S. with great fishing, boating, etc. 45 minutes from Birmingham and Huntsville via easy Interstate highways. Solitude and tranquility abounds at our home. The back yard features patio eating area, outdoor fireplace, covered seating area on deck with ceiling fans, outdoor speakers & lighting plus large hot tub with no neighbors within sight. Indoors features 4 bedrooms, 3 full baths, large kitchen & living areas, finished basement with home theater & workout room, and 3 car enclosed garages. High speed internet with Roku streaming on TV's. No cable or satellite TV however.
What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment
We will only accept sitters with verified references and/or online feedback after phone interview. No smoking inside or out. We also have a garden spot that is available (100% optional) if you wish to cultivate your green thumb, great time for growing most anything in northern Alabama during the summer!
You can be as isolated at our home as you wish, and contact free grocery pickup is available at our nearby Wal-Mart supercenter located approximately 2 miles away if you like.

Nick and I spent 3 months house sitting and dog sitting for Deb and Ed in their lovely home in Cullman, Alabama. We enjoyed our stay there and it was a pleasure looking after 16-year-old Jack. Jack is a sweet little dog and was easy to care for. Certain responsibilities included giving him his medications, which he took without any issue. Jack also gives the robot vacuum a run for its money – not sure which does a better job of cleaning up the kitchen floor! He’s also a polite dog and will only bark once to be let out and once to be let back in. If you’re too slow he’ll bark again, but only one bark at a time! He always looked forward to the evening joy rides in the golf cart around the property. Additionally, Jack is great on car rides; we took him to the nearby lakes and went for short walks in the area. We already miss the little guy. There are several nearby attractions in Cullman, Alabama including Smith Lake, which is approximately 10 minutes away. There are many outdoor activities to do at the lake, like swimming, kayaking, boating and fishing. If you enjoy shopping, there are several nice shops downtown and Cullman is halfway between the larger cities of Huntsville and Birmingham. Deb and Ed’s house is lovely and comfortable. There are three bedrooms, a hot tub and a theater room in the basement. The property itself is large and beautifully landscaped - Nick used the ride-on mower to maintain the property. We even saw a couple of armadillos in their backyard – they are quite adorable and can run surprisingly fast. Ed and Deb are kind and accommodating homeowners. They went out of their way to pick us up and drop us off at the airport. They were always responsive to our questions and concerns. After 3 months of calls and texts, it felt like we had known each other forever. We plan on keeping in touch and hopefully plan to meet up during our future travels.

Adorable Dog To Care For With Beautiful, Peaceful House Sit As Bonus!
We were excited to be chosen for this competitive house sit during July and August 2020. It was a great experience from the beginning. From our first phone conversation with Eddie to the thorough instructions and solid communications, all went smoothly; not to mention that their beautiful home was comfortable and spacious. We’d wanted to experience more of northern Alabama in addition to working on our businesses and projects. This was the perfect locale for both. Walking Huntsville’s nineteenth-century neighborhoods and exploring the awesome music history of Muscle Shoals were highlights. To top it off, we got to care for the sweetest dog ever. We already miss Li’l Jack, especially how he’d see us coming down the driveway and happily prance up to the car after we’d made a grocery run. Morning coffee on the back terrace was another joy, along with the bountiful garden that Deb and Eddie had planted, and, due to the timing of their trip, we got to enjoy! We think of Deb and Eddie as fellow intrepid travelers and we really enjoyed having an extra day after their return to share dinner and tales of the road. We highly recommend this sit but only if WE can’t be there… LOL!

Deb, Eddy, and Little Jack are absolutely adorable!
I knew that I liked Deb and Ed Hoenig from the very first contact! They are well-traveled, interesting, and funny. They have a beautiful home to take care of, and the sweetest little dog lives there to keep me company. Little Jack has a routine, and it was easy to get into the swing of things and make sure he was happy. He is so lovable! Deb had prepared all of Little Jack's meds, so all I needed to do was add them to his breakfast and dinner. I appreciate thorough instructions, and that is what I received from Eddy. We had time before they left to go around the house and yard, going over exactly what was required, from checking the chemicals in the hot tub and watering the plants, to the evening golf cart ride with Jack around the property. There was so much to enjoy in the house, as well as in the town of Cullman. The Hoenigs directed me to great places to hike and explore in the area. They wanted me to be happy while I was there, and even allowed me to have a friend visit for a week so that I wouldn't be lonely. Deb and Eddy are very thoughtful, kind, helpful, and generous. I would be delighted to spend more time with them and take care of Jack again while they are away. It was a pleasure getting to know Deb and Eddy, and I believe everyone who meets them feels the same. Thank you both for a wonderful experience!

Pleasant, Peaceful and very Enjoyable
We enjoyed meeting and getting to know these wonderful people, Ed and Debbie. They have a large, beautiful brick home well furnished that we found very comfortable. They left excellent instructions and useful information/directions. We enjoyed spending quiet days and afternoons on their back deck and made good use of their hot tub and cushioned porch swing under overhead fans. I am a big bird watcher, so I made good use of the many acres of their property, trees, fields and stream. Their sweet small dog, Jack, is the best dog we have ever taken care of and enjoyed him immensely. They have wifi, roku, netflix and other media to enjoy in the evenings upstairs or downstairs on their large projection screen entertainment center. They also offered us use of their electric golf cart on their property, as well as kayaks to use at a local lake. We highly recommend this house sit for the pleasant, peaceful experience.
