About this assignment

We are looking for a clean, responsible person to care for our chickens, a small flock of sheep, some turkeys, our home and garden.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Feeding chickens, turkeys and sheep, letting the sheep out in the morning and putting them back in at night, collecting eggs, watering a few outdoor plants, keeping an eye on the garden irrigation, light weeding of garden, maintaining a clean house.

What are the good features of the property and location

We are located in Sonora, CA. We are about 10 minutes from the closest grocery store, but our house feels very secluded. We're on five acres and have a beautiful view of the foothills from our deck. It's very quiet at our house and the night sky is dark enough to see the Milky Way on most nights. There are lots of local activities and we are close enough to make a day trip to Yosemite. Our house is newly remodeled and we have a nice, covered outdoor area to enjoy being outside in any weather.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

We live on a gravel road, it's a good road, but your car will get dusty in the summer. We ask that people drive 10 mph or less to keep the road in good shape. We have an apartment over the garage that is rented to full-time tenants.

Although it can be hot here in the summer months, it is easy to escape to higher elevations for day trips, and it's the best time to visit the passes that are closed in the winter. Also, we have solar panels that generate all of the power for the house, so using the AC to keep yourself comfortable in encouraged!

Amazing Home in Sonora

Beautiful home, views, & the Milky Way every night! Caring for the animals was a daily task with wiggle room when you want to venture out for a day. Their low key home has a beautiful, well appointed kitchen and covered deck. Fully solar, so plenty of power for the hot summer days. The hiking, local pool (10 min), farmers markets, music & wineries were many & spectacular. Communication was a breeze! Thanks so much for a great experience. We would definitely house sit for them again.

Solitude in the Sierra Foothills

I had a fun 2-week opportunity to housesit for the Greene's at their idyllic location in the Sierra foothills. It's a beautiful setting in open oak forests, rolling hills with beautiful views across the valleys. Their house is extremely spacious, clean and comfortable with lots of great features. I particularly liked the big deck and window seats in the living room looking out over it. The kitchen is set up perfectly for cooking, Brian and Mckenzie were both very welcoming and gracious. If you're a wildlife/bird watcher like myself, what a perfect setting. In May the wild turkeys were gobbling and displaying, acorn woodpeckers chattering, mourning doves cooing, jackrabbits here and there, deer browsing, great horned owls hooting at night, Anna's hummingbirds busily working and a pair of bluebirds on the property (to mention a few highlights). While the location is very quiet and a bit remote, it's relatively close to amenities and Sonora is a nice little town. As for care taking the animals, it's a pretty basic routine that didn't require huge amounts of time. There were chickens, young turkeys and four sheep - well-behaved and fun to watch - while I was there. Making sure they have water and food and are buttoned up at night is pretty simple. The birds do need a watchful eye during the day though if/when they are free ranging outside their runs, as there are potential predators around so that's an important responsibility with the sit. The fresh eggs were delicious! It happened to be unseasonably cool and wet for May but weather's what it is - unpredictable. It's a very peaceful and beautiful setting. I enjoyed the stay very much - definitely has nature inspiring and regenerative qualities.

Sonora

We houseseat for Mckenzie and her family for about 2 weeks.Their house is very comfortable, very clean and has a beautiful deck with a view. We really enjoyed rural California. We were there in July/August and its very hot out there, maybe something to keep in mind when you want to explore around Sonora. We did take care for the chickens and garden what was very low maintenance. Mckenzie made an extensive amount of information available to us and she responded to our questions in a few hours. It was a very nice experience and recommend this family, their home and of course the chickens very highly!
