About this assignment

We are looking for an active couple, french speaking ( or at least one of you) and who are used to looking after an organic vegetable garden and generally maintaining a property.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Daily maintenance of our organic vegetable garden. Picking and freezing soft fruit and any other produce ready at that time of year.
Mowing ( ride- on mower)
Strimming (Husqvarna petrol driven) around the property.
Coping with any practical problems that might arise. Maintaining the small swimming pool.

What are the good features of the property and location

Lovely peaceful spot on the edge of village with post office and informal bar plus a boulangerie. Pretty wooden house on two floors built in 2012. Very sunny situation beside a GR walking path so people passing by from time to time. Wonderful walking and cycling '(bikes available) all around. Themines is situated in the department of the Lot between Brive and Figeac and ideal for visiting Rocamadour, St Cirq Lapopie, the prehistoric paintings of Pech Merle and the Dordogne, Lot and Cele valleys. Lots of local restaurants offering cheap lunchtime and delicious evening meals.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

'Lagasse' is in the country up a short well maintained track and although you can easily walk to the village you certainly need a vehicle.
.The villagers are friendly but apart from one couple they tend to only speak French!
Our nearest neighbours are 500m away.
Nearest shops, Supermarket and markets are 10 kms away. Our immediate neighbours are sheep!

3ish weeks in the French Country

This sit was very organic and an almost off the grid. Pat and Pete are very active, accomplished cyclist, and social people who have a lovely spot surrounded by beautiful countryside. They built the house themselves and have curated a large organic garden. I say almost off grid and organic as they do things such as save washing up water to water plants, use extremely organic ways of fertilizing the garden, use solar (but are attached to the grid still) and monitor usage of electricity for different times of the day, which we very much appreciated their dedication. The property has a sheep barn as a neighbor, therefore there is a very large amount of flies. There are no screens on windows so we found the flies a force to be reckoned with. As per the Organic state of the property, they wished we didn't use chemicals. So the flies after 3 weeks got a bit overwhelming. And we are from Australia, flies are pretty much our national animal after the kangaroo. It was a fairly hot September so the windows needed to be open at night to have air movement, but with no screens or fans/AC, the mozzies, spiders and flies all joined in. Again from Australia, so mosquitoes usually carry horrendous diseases so we are used to being very cautious. And our spiders are the size of dinner plates, so small garden spiders don't bother much. But for someone who is not used to insect's everywhere all the time, it might pose an issue. The garden was an absolute pleasure to take care of and the pool beautiful in the hot weather and easy to care for. The village was cute, we found most people would speak English and actually wanted to practice their English with us rather then converse with us in our terrible attempts at French.???? There is a Lot (pun intended) of fabulous restaurants and day trips within 1.5-2 hours drive.

Lovely wooden house in South West France

What to say about our 4 week house sit... time went by so fast, Patricia and Pete's home was just a Joy to care for, it is located in such a beautiful and peaceful area of the Lot, and what they have created is a piece of heaven. We were greeted as long lost friends and Pat & Pete organized a get together with local friends and neighbours to introduce us and laid the groundwork for an incredible stay and the making of new friends. We are very grateful for such and look forward to returning to the Lot and visiting our new friends :-) We would return to house sit in a heart beat. Luigi & Adele

A dream month in Thémines

This was my first housesitting assignment and I could not have had better owners, in Pete and Pat. They were gone biking in Portugal for three weeks and I must say they were an example for me. I was really impressed by their physical shape. A beautiful house in a beautiful setting, next to a GR, in an area of France where there is so much to see. I was introduced to their circle of friends, in which I was generously accepted. Thank you Pat and Pete for your trust. I hope to have lived up to your expectations. JC
