We live in a valley in a farmhouse in central Portugal. Our dogs are two cheeky terriers who love company and walks. We also have two new cats which will need careful handling with the dogs at this stage, and chickens and some chicks on their way too which will need a bit of extra looking after. This placement is more suitable for people with transport owing to the remote location, but we have had sitters in the past without cars. We welcome sitters with some gardening knowledge or interest, particularly as we have a few seedlings on the go at the moment. If you love the countryside life, love rural Portugal or are genuinely interested in finding out more about life here then please read on...
We would like to find a housesitter who can look after our dogs and give them a good walk once a day, keep the cats happy, the chickens fed and looked after and the chicken shed clean, the garden ticking over and the house clean. We may have builders working for a couple of days a week on an outbuilding, or people dry stone-walling occasionally, and if so you'd need to give them coffee and biscuits! You'd also need to make sure Wriggles gets his joint medication and gets a little bit of a hip massage from time to time as he has arthritis. We require decent communication, particularly if you are housesitting alone, as this is a remote location, so if we contact you whilst you are housesitting for us we need you to commit to replying to us that very same day. Owing to the fact that you will be alone in the middle of a valley you need to be self reliant and able to deal with problems yourself capably as they arise. Therefore we are looking for practical mature applicants who are able to keep calm and happy without too much support from us while we are away.
It is set in a very beautiful and deserted valley full of olive tree
terraces. It's a 15 mins drive to Oleiros, a bustling market town with
lots of nice restaurants and a similar length drive to Alvaro where you can swim in the stunning river-lake of Cabril. You'd be staying in a large loft heated by a woodburning stove. The rest of the house has wood fired central heating and the kitchen has a woodburning range.
Own transport would be helpful.
We have wifi available for your use, but no TV.
This situation would probably suit people who don't need that much external stimulation and who love nature, and love peace and quiet.
