About this assignment

We are in search of a farm sitter who is familiar with or open to the responsibilities of caring for a garden and greenhouse starts, and who doesn’t mind a little solitude. Writers, artists, nature-lovers, or someone who can work remotely is an ideal candidate.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Responsibilities include watering indoor and greenhouse veggie starts, watering the garden if necessary, feeding and watering animals, which include two cats, a flock of chickens, and one goofy black lab. This farm uses only organic and permaculture methods, which suits the steep terrain.

What are the good features of the property and location

Our little farm is located on a knob overlooking the Tye, which is one of the most beautiful rivers in Virginia. About three acres are under cultivation and the rest is forested. Reliable high-speed internet is available, as well as an artist studio. The house is modern, small and efficient, and the living space is on the second floor so that one feels like they are living in a treehouse! Along the Tye River and through our property runs the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trail, which is a 7 mile trail beginning in Piney River and ending in Tye River. It’s a flat, easy hike, bike ride, or running trail. The farm is located roughly halfway between Charlottesville and Lynchburg. If you love swimming in rivers, fishing, boating, hiking, or being outdoors and getting a little dirty, this is the place for you.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

Something to consider is that the living area is accessible only by climbing a flight a stairs. The nearest supermarket is in the village of Lovingston about ten miles away, so transportation is a must. Nelson county is known for its agritourism and abundance of breweries, cideries, and distilleries. The AT and Blue Ridge Parkway are about a 30 minute drive and there are several gorgeous hikes in the area.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.
