About this assignment

We are looking for someone to stay in our large Portland craftsman home, take care of our 3 dogs, 2 cats, 7 chickens, and snake (no care will be needed for her). We have amazing pets and a wonderful home that we hope you will love like we love!

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Twice daily feedings of cats and dogs, twice weekly tending to chickens (with free eggs!), and letting our dogs out in the backyard several times a day. Two of our dogs need daily walks and one loves also going to the local dog park at Mt Tabor! Our dogs love to be cuddled! Because of this, we are looking for someone who is either retired or is able to work remotely. The dogs can be left alone for several hours at a time, but we do not want them to be alone all day. And some plant care - we love our plants too :)

What are the good features of the property and location

We live in the Foster-Powell area of Portland - walking distance to restaurants/bars, Mt Tabor Park, on a major bus line, and plenty of parking available. Our foursquare Craftsman has 5 bedrooms and 2.5 baths, including a large primary suite on the main floor with a walk-in shower, double sinks, and separate toilet closet. Hardwood floors, comfy couches with large screen TV in living room, large dining table, huge kitchen with 6-burner gas stove, and fiber internet with wifi extenders (including into our lovely backyard). And, we have central A/C!

Our backyard includes a grassy area with a large patio including a covered area and dining table, outdoor fireplaces, and a gas and charcoal grill. We have a garden that will have tomatoes, blueberries, zucchini, cucumber, and more, not to mention fresh eggs! We also have a huge front porch to hang out on and we live on a cul-de-sac so there is very little car traffic.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

We have stairs inside and outside of our house, including laundry on the lower level. Whoever watches our house would need to be able to navigate stairs easily.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

Great Portland Family

We are residents of Portland, and when we met Becca, we felt welcomed right away. She introduced us to all the pets right away and her family. Took us on a tour of the home, introduced us to the chickens, and see the cute little new baby chics. Shared and spoke the special commands, which the dogs immediately recognized and quit the unwanted behavior. She provided written instructions, pointed out details on how to care for her beautiful wood kitchen countertop, and the plants had great little stickers when to water them, which was much appreciated since we love plants, and a few we’re unfamiliar and on a watering schedule. At the end of the tour she asked if we ever had any questions she was reachable, being mindful of the area of travel. We stayed in touch while Becca was away and she would respond right away. In caring for the yard, we checked in about anything we weren’t sure of, and she appreciated it. It was a hot spell in Portland at the time of our sit. One of the dogs was a big strong lover, wagging tail, who enjoyed a bear hug now and then, walks in the early morning and sunset (coolest times of the day). The other girl dog is an older dog and may enjoy being on your lap more, just enjoying affection. She went out in the yard. The house cat is very affectionate, and knows when your heading to the couch. He will race you there to his spot, need the blanket to make a perfect seat for you, as long as your there in position to pat him into a blissful state. Lol. Let’s not forget the outdoor kittie. She’s smart, and will try to follow you on your dog walk each time, but will only go as far as the end of the street. They all have sweet personalities, and will love you as long as you reassure them that you’re there for them and give them lots of attention. They’re smart and knew the family just left. Here’s a tip for anyone who housesits for Becca’s pets. We usually walk together as a couple, but the first day we decided that I stay home with the older little dog, because she really wants to go for a walk, but can’t due to issues with her legs. If you hold her, she’ll snuggle into your neck and stay a while until the other one comes home. I only had to do that once. The next day upon our return I would shower her at the door with cheeks rubs, and praises. Doing that each time we came home from short trips. She was great and didn’t fret because she would greet us knowing we’d show her love every time we returned. We knew the neighborhood so, we would occasionally go for walks to other parks. Mt. Tabor is a great area. The other amazing part about their home is the wonderful architecture, and her amazing kitchen. It was great preparing dishes there. We enjoyed using the outside cooking Wok. Enjoyed the hammocks with the dogs, watching the chickens scratch, and run free range. The dogs understood that they were not allowed to chase the chickens, and followed commands very well. We would highly recommend this house sit. We’re truly thankful to meet Becca, her sweet family, and loving pets. Joyful memories! We look forward to staying in touch through our travels.
