About this assignment

We are seeking a loving non-smoking couple interested in spending time in the mountains of beautiful Western North Carolina in mid December 2025. We would like you to come in the afternoon Tuesday December 16th to meet the pets and have dinner with us so you can comfortably settle in before we leave early the next morning Wednesday the 17th. We will be returning the evening of Sunday December 21st. We will be traveling with our dog, so your company while we are away will be our funny cats and silly chickens. If interested in spending a quiet time in a beautiful mountain setting, please contact us! (We will leave detailed written instructions for you, as well as contact numbers.)

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

We have 6 mostly indoor cats and 7 funny chickens to look after while we are away. We are asking you to come the evening before we leave for you to meet them, and share a dinner with us, (to allow you to also observe their evening routines, and let the cats see we are all friends!). We will post detailed instructions for the cats and for the chickens on the fridge. :o)

What are the good features of the property and location

Our log cabin is located on 8 wooded acres in Cold Springs Ranch, a gated community adjacent to Pisgah Natl Forest in beautiful western North Carolina, between Asheville NC and Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge TN. At an elevation of 4,000', this is a hiker's paradise, only 4 mi from Max Patch and the Appalachian Trail. Charming Waynesville is our closest town, with unique shopping and fabulous eating. Not far is Maggie Valley and Cataloochee Ski and recreation areas. Not quite an hour to Biltmore Estate and other Asheville attractions, and Smoky Mountains Natl Park.

We are in a private rustic setting, with Starlink for cell service and internet. Our closest neighbor has a live weather camera on his website, please feel free to contact us for a link to get more of a feel for this special area!

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

We have enjoyed having couples sit, as it allows for them to share the duties without anything feeling like chores! Then it is so much more pleasurable for you to be here for the cats and chickens while having a nice mountain getaway. This may be the perfect place for the couple who likes to take plenty of beautiful walks, enjoy the quiet of the forest from rockers on the porch.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

Mountain Retreat

Part of the fun of pet sitting is meeting wonderful people like Christina and Garry. We arrived at their mountain retreat a day early and enjoyed getting to know them. Their house is a beautiful structure showing wood everywhere. Their front yard had colorful flowers and a vegetable garden from which we harvested tasty tomatoes and zucchini. Their development has Ore Knob, a great location for sunsets with many layers of Smoky Mountains as a backdrop. The 4 cats were friendly and easy to care for. Filling the bird feeders was easy as well. The 7 chickens followed a routine that was well described in the notes that Christna and Garry provided us. These notes also had information on grocery stores and recommendations for restaurants in Waynesville. Just up the road is Max Patch Loop which has a lovely hike which overlaps the Appalachian Trail for a half mile or so. The Oconaluftee Visitor’s Center is at the entrance to the Smoky Mountains. This visitor’s center had wonderful displays about the history and life of the native Americans and the European settlers of this region.

Max Patch house sitting

It was a pleasure to house sit for Christina and Gary. Their house is beautiful and very livable two story log cabin nestled into the woods which makes it very secluded. The chickens are easy to take care of and the cats are lovable. Nearby Waynesville is a cute little town and has all the amenities you need and several nice restaurants. The location is good for day trips, near lots hiking trails or just chilling on the property.
