Our sweet dog Juno is one of the mellowest mutts you’ll ever meet. Rescued from the wilderness she’s now content to simply eat, sleep, and get cuddled. It’s a snap taking care of her.

About this assignment

My wife and I are looking for a reliable individual or couple to stay in our mountain home in early July to take care of our loveable rescue dog Juno while we go away for a brief vacation.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Your primary responsibility is taking care of Juno, feeding and walking her mostly. Also tend to minor housekeeping so our home is in the same condition when we return.

What are the good features of the property and location

Our cozy timber frame home is set in a fabulous location at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort near Golden, British Columbia. Both scenic photos were taken within 10km of our house. It’s off the beaten track but perfectly situated for visiting six nearby national parks. Yoho and Glacier parks are less than a hour’s drive away while four others (Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, and Mount Revelstoke) are just a bit farther. There’s also great alpine hiking and mountain biking directly out our back door via the resort gondola. You can also visit Boo, the resort’s resident grizzly bear. For even more adventure you can go whitewater rafting on the Kicking Horse River or venture across the Golden Skybridge, highest pedestrian suspension bridge in Canada. Otherwise you can just kick back and take it easy while listening to the mountain stream that flows directly behind our wilderness home.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

Juno needs to be walked 3 or 4 times each day and we don’t want her left home alone for more than four or five hours at a time. Being a rescue dog she has a strong prey drive and must be walked on leash otherwise she’s a flight risk if she picks up the scent of wildlife.

No smokers please.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

A wonderful Mountain Christmas

Housesitting for Ross and Laura over Christmas in Kicking Horse was truly a perfect holiday experience for my partner and I. Their home is peaceful, welcoming, and incredibly comfortable — watching the snow fall quietly outside, seeing skiers make their way along the nearby trails, and spending time curled up in their cozy reading nooks was exactly what we needed. The location itself is hard to beat. Between endless trails, fresh mountain air, and the surrounding nature, we never once found ourselves bored. There was always something to explore or enjoy, whether it was a long walk, a short adventure, or simply soaking in the calm of the community. Juno was an absolute joy to care for. She is easy, sweet, and full of quirky personality — we already find ourselves joking about her silliness and missing her company. Looking after her felt effortless and genuinely fun. Ross and Laura are wonderful hosts: kind, thoughtful, and adventurous people who made everything about the sit clear and comfortable from the start. We’re grateful for the trust they placed in us, and happy to say we now consider them friends. We truly hope to return to Kicking Horse and spend more time there in the years ahead. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this housesit to anyone looking for a rewarding, relaxed, and memorable experience.

Fantastic Experience from Start to Finish

Ross and Laura, thank you again for trusting me with your home and with Juno. This was my first time house-sitting like this, but from the moment I arrived, you both made everything easy and welcoming. I originally planned for this to be a quiet, work-focused trip, but the scenery and the whole environment were so incredible that it honestly turned into more of a nature sabbatical. Your recommendations for hikes, restaurants, and local spots made it even better, and the mountain passes you left were such a thoughtful touch. From notes and maps and easy to follow instructions... The Prather's truly went above and beyond to have me prepared for the home, the community, and their wonderful Juno. Your home is well cared for, comfortable, and part of a wonderful neighbourhood. I never felt micromanaged or restricted. You showed real trust and encouraged me to enjoy the space, and that made the entire 18 days relaxed and enjoyable. And Juno is amazing. She is easygoing, loves being outside which matched me perfectly, and is incredibly low maintenance. We settled into a great rhythm together and I genuinely miss her already. I hope I get the chance to see her, and both of you, again soon. Thanks again.
