About this assignment

I am looking for mature and responsible people, preferably a couple between 50 and 70 years old,- maybe retired, able to speak English, well travelled and fit enough to maintain my big house, which I also use as a guesthouse. An asset would be if they are familiar with life in the tropics with weather conditions like storms and hurricanes.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

The responsibility they would have is to maintain my house and their own living space in a proper and clean manner. Unfortunately our dog Bobby passed away a month ago.
My housekeeper Georgie will be coming from time to time to help with cleaning. Also, we have a large garden which needs to be watered once a day, which they would have to do when the gardener does not come. He will be there twice a week.

What are the good features of the property and location

I am German and live on the island of St.Lucia since 48 years. My property is located in a beautiful quiet area, somewhat isolated, but not too far away from the little town of Vieux-Fort with supermarkets, drugstores and restaurants etc. My neighbors are mostly expats who have holiday homes here. We are in a community of about 12 houses. We have a fantastic view over the Caribbean sea and a beautiful garden with the most gorgeous flowers and plants. It's very serene and our guests appreciate the tranquility and harmony this area provides. Also, we have good wifi and internet service.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

I will provide free accommodation (including utilities) for them, but they have to buy their own groceries, meals etc. They have to be aware, that we are situated a bit away from town on a hill and there is no bus service to the house. The walk downhill is just 15 minutes, but uphill is about 40 minutes and when it is hot, it can be a bit tideous. It would be perfect if they could rent a vehicle if needed. But also there are buses to other locations, attractions and beautiful sites on the island down the road in town.
My property is now 35 years old and needs maintenance from time to time. An asset would be if they would be a bit handy. It's nothing major, just the regular maintenance. Also in a hurricane season they have to be prepared to take care of leaks and maybe mop and remove debris in the garden.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

What a special house sit

What a special housesit. Brigitte is a generous host and is quite the character with a lifetime of stories of living on the island. We had a lot of fun chatting as she ran me through what was needed on the sit and how life on a tropical island worked. Brigitte went to great pains to check all was well for me before and during the time she was away, which was kind and appreciated. The accomodation in the guesthouse was very comfortable and I spent a lot of time sitting on the terrace, looking out over the sea and garden as I wrote. It's an inspiring and special place. Even more special is Bobby. He is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever met, has his routines and is a very content dog. We bonded straight away and enjoyed each other's company. Preparing his food is easy and his 8am sausage is very important in his life. He loves to be brushed and will come to you when he wants a fuss. I came very close to packing him in my bags and bringing him home. The garden is easy to care for, sweeping the leaves from the paths and terrace each morning and watering the pot plants. Brigitte gave clear instructions to make it all go smoothly. Likewise instructions of what to do if it got stormy, as I was there at the beginning of hurricane season. I was hoping for a bit of stormy weather just for the experience but alas, the worst we got were some heavy showers! I didn't have a car as I was happy to just be at the house to look after Bobby and write, but it's only a 20 minute walk into town for essentials. It is a bit of a hike back up the hill on the way back but do it out of the heat of the day and it's no problem. I was fortunate that Brigitte has a very kind neighbour who drove me into town for heavier shopping and included me in some social events. Vieux Fort is not a tourist town so you get to experience local life with a market, street food and music playing from bars. If you did want to explore more, car hire is available with delivery to the door. I had a great six weeks here, my first time in the tropics. Although pesky, the mosquitoes were manageable and I soon got used to the heat and humidity to the point I rarely used the air-conditioning in the bedroom. Brigitte's social circle are so very kind and helpul and all have intersting life stories to tell. Brigitte, thank you for inviting me to sit. I'm so glad I was a fit and accepted. Your big heart, sense of humour and stories, your beautiful guesthouse, your wonderful friends and of course Bobby the Wunderhund made for a sit never to forget. I hope I might be able to come again in the future. All the best Richard
