About this assignment
We are looking for someone we can trust to take care of our 5 beloved cat family and garden while we are away.
They must be trustworthy and reliable. Ideally suited to a mature person or couple used to living in the country. We need someone from 18th of September until the 4th October but we can be flexible. The house is perfect for someone who loves cats, nature and quietness. Location is a quiet spot in the country but not remote. Our cosy casa is a 130year old traditional stone built Spanish finca heated by a cosy wood burner in the winter. If you are looking to experience Spain in it truest form, this is it. The house is rustic and modest with some renovations to be completed.
The sitter will need to be respectful of our property, keeping it clean and tidy.
What responsibilities are required of the house sitter
The main responsibilities are caring for our much loved 5 very friendly easy going cat family which need feeding breakfast and evening meal, fresh water and giving them lots of cuddles and company. There are a few planted trees that need watering by hand. There others are on irrigation. Also potted plants on the patio that will need watering. As water is scarce in this area every drop counts, so the water is used from the washing machine to water as many of the plants as possible. We'd like the house to be kept clean and tidy during your stay.
What are the good features of the property and location
The house is situated in a peaceful spot in amongst the lemon and orange groves and surrounded by mountain views, the perfect place to relax. We do have wifi and freeview TV. The nearest town of Alhama de Murcia is a 10 minute drive away and 25 mins to the beaches and marina of Puerto Mazarron. Murcia International airport only 20 mins away. If you are interested in nature, bird watching, walking, cycling or just relaxing getting away from the hustle and bustle the area is perfect.
There is plenty of room to park outside our house. We have 25,000 sq metres of land. You’re very welcome to bring your caravan or motorhome. The garden is in it’s infancy, but the are some good chill out spots to watch the sun go down with a glass of wine.
What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment
Our house is rural, but not isolated. We like the simpler life, so there is no dishwasher, microwave or coffee machines. A car or clean driving licence is essential as we are not on a public transport route. If you aren’t arriving with your own vehicle, we do have a car available to use. It is an eco-friendly house with water saving policies. There are security cameras at the property, but only on the outside to protect the front and back doors. We are non-smoking vegetarians, living the dream.

Fabulous Rural housesit with The Fantastic Five
I housesat for Elaine and Howard for the month of January 2024 and it was an absolute joy to look after their very sweet cats (The Fantastic Five) and to spend peaceful days and nights in their comfortable finca. Elaine and Howard are personable, interesting and genuinely invested in making your stay in their home an enjoyable experience. Elaine was very organized (sufficient kitty supplies and food on hand and a detailed guide for any “possible scenarios”) and they responded very quickly to any inquiry I posed of them whilst they were motorbiking in India. Caring for the cats was a delight - they are so loving and affectionate. They are very relaxed, happy cats. I will miss them very much! Each day, I had ample time to go explore different areas in the region. I did lots of hiking in the nearby Sierra Espuna Park and I took day trips to the coast (30 min drive). This housesit is one of my most enjoyable housesitting experiences yet (and I’ve completed 25 now) - the cats, the property, the homeowners - ALL GREAT ! I would highly recommend sitting for Elaine and Howard. I feel I arrived as a housesitter, but left as a friend! Thank you Elaine and H for everything!

Furry Gang in Murcia
Elaine and Howard's finca is in the quiet & tranquil campo but with easy access to local towns, shops etc. Elaine & Howard as hosts were so supportive – welcoming me a few days beforehand thus giving me the opportunity to familiarise myself with their home, their cats and their routine. Nothing was too much trouble for them and in addition they kept me very well-fed! As a vegan, I was very comfortable in this vegetarian animal loving household. It felt as though we were on the same page on so many animal welfare/environmental topics. I struggled with the heat – it was August in southern Spain after all – but there were fans without which it might have been difficult. The house is of traditional build in a terrace of four and very interesting architecturally. And, leaving the best until last, most importantly for me, the cats were enchanting – friendly, fun and full of mischief. Thank you, Tinker, Mouse, Pepe, Sandy & Blossom for making my stay such a delight.

Marvelous experience, lovely cats and nice home
I consider myself extremely lucky for being able to experience this house sitt. Elaine and Howard are lovely people and made me feel at home from the beginning. When I arrieved they pick me up from the airport and spend the days before leaving showing the rutine for the cats and the house. Their four cats are wonderfull, I felt in love with them from the beginnig. They are super cuddly and playfull. One of the cats needed some medical atention and trught all the process Elaine and H were always available. The house is really nice, and it's located in a calm area with wonderfull neighbors. Everything was so peaceful there and it provided me with the perfect calm to write, draw and concentrate in my artistic side. Since I don't have a car or license, they couldn't lend me one of their vehicles to go and buy my grocceries, but before their left they made sure to introduce me to their closest friends and neighbors who where always ready to step up and help with whatever I needed. Overall a magnificent experience. Would love to go back there some day. I totally recommend this for anyone that loves cats and a peaceful lifestyle.
