About this assignment

Sitter needed to take care of two affectionate dogs, 6 chickens and property while we are away for almost two weeks this September. We live at 6700 feet in the aspen, spruce and pine forest of the White Mountains of Arizona with temps 20 degrees cooler than the desert lowlands. We are a three hour drive from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport so it is preferable if you have your own vehicle.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Our super friendly dogs need to be fed, watered and attended to. They do not need to be walked as our property is on a fenced acre of land. The chickens will need to be checked daily with eggs gathered and to monitor their feeding systems and to open their pens in the a.m. and close them up at night. You are welcome to eat the fresh eggs. Our property has automatic irrigation and the sitter will need to know how to troubleshoot the system should their be a malfunction. We provide instructions and numbers of people who can help with that. We have a vegetable garden and ask the housesitter to gather the ripe vegetables on the vine (except the pumpkins). These include cucumbers, tomatoes, tomatillos, squash, peppers, eggplants.

What are the good features of the property and location

August is a very desirable time of year to be in the mountains. The crisp, clear night air and starry skies are exceptional. Our home is very comfortable and has all the amenities. We have high speed Wi-Fi; cable TV, a smart TV, washer and dryer. We have a clean hot tub on our front deck. Our outside deck space is shaded and private and provides an additional outdoor room to enjoy our every changing mountain weather. Mountain weather is unpredictable and refreshing compared to the desert lowlands. September is one of the best months with many community events celebrating
fall. Our community of Pinetop-Lakeside borders the Apache Nation and the Sitgreaves National Forest. It is 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix. We are an hour away from the Petrified Forest, 3 1/2 hours away from the Grand Canyon about 4 hours from Sedona and about 2 hours from Winslow and Flagstaff. The community has an extensive trail system for mountain biking and hiking. The drives out into the mountains offer shimmering peaks, lakes and trails and will provide you with the freshest air and lots of opportunities to see big-horned sheep, elk, Pronghorn antelope, deer and possible black bear. We have resident nesting bald eagles in the lakes in our town of Pinetop. The old mountain town of Greer has wonderful restaurants to reward you for taking a drive only 1 hour away. The history of the area of replete with the old west frontiers settlements of Mormons, many of whom still live here; the Apache and Navajo people who live and shop here; and the people from the desert floor who have their summer homes here. There are several public golf clubs in the area.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

The days may be warm and the nights cool. We regulate household temperatures by opening windows at night and closing windows during the day. We use space and cooling fans as needed.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

Great housesit!

We had a great time staying at Katherine and Claude’s place and taking care of their sweet dogs Buddy and Ingrid. We very much enjoyed being able to spend a few weeks in the beautiful Pinetop-Lakeside area with its lovely summer weather – warm days, afternoon thunderstorms, cool nights, and even a surprising hailstorm! Their house is comfortable with lots of different “spaces” in which to sit and read, work on a laptop, watch TV or just pet the dogs. Ingrid and Buddy preferred sitting or laying nearby and enjoyed as much attention as we would give them. Ingrid got a little nervous when it thundered, and occasionally both of them got excited and wanted to run over to the fence to visit the neighbor’s dogs, but otherwise they stayed pretty mellow and easy to look after. We were also responsible for getting five chickens and a rooster in and out of their coop every day, and definitely enjoyed gathering and eating one or two fresh eggs most mornings. Another perk was being able to use the jacuzzi in the evening, made all the more enticing by being able to look up at the night sky filled with stars. Katherine and Claude were very friendly upon our arrival at their home, and they gave us all the information we needed for an easy and pleasant stay. They were readily accessible while they were away when we had a couple questions that needed answering, and all in all they did everything required to make this a very rewarding housesitting experience.

Lovely autumn in White Mountains AZ

My first home-sitting was great, thanks to Katherine & Claude and their friendly, easy-going pets. After a warm welcome, Claude showed me the features of the house and Katherine had a list of contacts in case of problems. Their pride of home and family were obvious throughout. The pet routines were simple and the dogs Ingrid and Buddy usually roamed in the huge yard, or came to get petted and sit near me. It was fun to care for the chickens, like my grand-father did and son does. The 'White Mountains' are a vacation-home area of pleasant (if arid) weather and regular activities. In October, there was an indie-film festival and a "Fun Run Walk" for families. There was also time to visit the Apache Nation Museum and the Petrified Forest national park. Thank you Katherine & Claude for this wonderful experience.

Great Family/Pets and Location

Katherine and Claude are kind, generous and thoughtful. I arrived a day early and we were able to go over all the care instructions.. They were very organized and provided contacts for vet, handyman, friends and local resources. {Provided maps from the visitor center as well) I was able to enjoy a nice and delicious dinner with them prior to their departure. During their trip they were easy to communicate with and we used what's app for overseas contact. Any questions I had were easily answered during my stay. Their 2 dogs, Ingrid and Buddy are a delight and sweet as can be and easy to care for. The chickens were very easy and provided fresh eggs and I also enjoyed fresh veggies from the garden. The area is lovely to visit with pine trees and abundant outdoor activities. It is less then a 10 minute drive to hiking trailheads in the white mountains. I am new to mindmyhouse and this was my first assignment. I couldn't have asked for a better family, pets and home. Katherine and Claude were very easy to sit for and a delight. Many thanks for this stay!
