About this assignment

We are looking for somebody who would enjoy staying in this natural paradise, who is good with animals, and who will keep our house in reasonable shape. The sitter would need to have a car, as it is a good 30-minute walk to get to public transportation, which does not run very often. We do have bicycles, but it is steep around here, very steep.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

We would expect the house sitter to look after our three-legged wonder cat, Hercules, and give him lots of love and affection. He has an automatic cat feeder, so responsibilities would include making sure that his food is topped up and he has water. Besides that, just keep the house in good condition, water the house plants, and enjoy the local cheeses, cider, and nature!

What are the good features of the property and location

Our house is equipped with fiber optic internet connection, so it is the perfect place for remote workers and those seeking tranquility in the gorgeous Picos de Europa mountains. We are located in a small village with stunning views of Pico Urriellu. The house is only half an hour's drive from some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. We are a 5-10 minutes car ride from supermarkets, pharmacies, health centers, etc. The Cabrales area is a very popular touristic destination with a ton of good food and activities such as paddling, swimming, rock climbing, mountain biking, via ferratas, wildlife watching, caving, canyoning, etc., etc., etc.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

We live in an area where not much English is spoken, so being able to speak a bit of Spanish would be convenient. A car is required, as the pueblo is located 3 km up a very steep road with no public transportation to the village (you would have to go to the village below ours to catch a bus). This is a rural area an hour and a half drive from any major city (Gijón, Santander, Oviedo), so it would be best for someone who likes peace, tranquility, and nature. The house is over 200 years old and was a renovation project. While it is 95% completed, it is still a little rough around the edges. There is no central heating or air conditioning, but we do have a log fire for heat.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

Affectionate cat in an extraordinary place

The stay at Jackie and Steve's house, with their cat Hércules, was really fantastic. They took care to write a very complete document on the running of the house and the caring of their pet, and also included useful recommendations on supermarkets, restaurants and interesting places to visit in that area. The house is very cosy and it's in a privileged area from where you can contemplate the Picos de Europa, go hiking or walk along some of the most beautiful beaches in Asturias. In this place, Jackie and Steve enjoy a healthy and peaceful life, in harmony with nature and I was able to enjoy the same feeling during my stay. Hércules is a very affectionate cat and very easy to take care of. During the day, he goes in and out of the house whenever he wants and always comes back on time for his meals, at night he likes to be petted and to sleep by the fireplace. In short, it was a really positive experience that I would love to have again and I feel very lucky to have met these extraordinary people.
