About this assignment

Hello,

We will be away from our little piece of paradise for about 7 months and are looking for kind, responsible people to care for and enjoy our cottage in the heart of the Amazon jungle. The property sits on 6.5 hectares of land with its own river, fruit trees, and areas of primary forest.

A genuine love for animals is essential. Our small animal family includes 4 adult dogs, 2 cats, and 7 chickens. They are an important part of our daily life and will need attentive and respectful care while we are away.

This place is ideal for those who wish to slow down, relax, and reconnect deeply with nature. Surrounded by extraordinary fauna and flora, it offers a peaceful and immersive jungle experience—perfect for nature lovers or anyone seeking a simple, grounded lifestyle close to the earth.

We look forward to hearing from you.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

You will be responsible for caring for our animals and helping maintain the space.

We have 3 adult mixed-breed dogs and 2 mixed-breed cats (one sleeps inside, the other stays outside). They need to be fed in the morning and again in the evening.

Each morning, you’ll open the hen house, feed the chickens, clean their space, and collect the eggs (and of course enjoy eating them!). In the evening, the hen house will need to be closed. There are 7 chickens in total.

We would also really appreciate it if you could keep an eye on the land, the garden, and the fruit trees—and of course enjoy the fruits when they are in season.

Most importantly, we hope you’ll enjoy the energy of this special place, live in harmony with nature, and spread good vibes all around.

What are the good features of the property and location

Our land is part of an eco-retreat project, offering a unique and peaceful environment. You will have access to a Maloka that can be used for meditation, yoga sessions, or quiet work time, as well as a fire area, an outdoor kitchen, a greenhouse, and wide, lush natural spaces to explore and enjoy.

Please note that we host Airbnb guests in two wooden cabins located on the land, but you will not need to do anything related to hosting. However, because of this, the Maloka is primarily reserved for guests when it is in use. You are very welcome to enjoy it whenever it is free.

The house is located near a small town where you’ll find two grocery stores with basic food supplies, four restaurants, and three bakeries. From the town, the house is reached by a 15-minute walk along a natural path, crossing a river via our suspension bridge—an adventure that leads you into a truly magical and wild space.

Transportation is easy: mototaxis and vans are available in town and can take you to Tarapoto (about 1 hour / 35 km). Tarapoto offers everything you might need, including doctors, dentists, hospitals, pharmacies, supermarkets, cultural centers, handicraft markets, fresh fruit and vegetable markets, and an airport.

You can also travel by van to Yurimaguas, a city in the lowland forest, located about 90 km away.

Staying on the land itself is a deeply immersive experience. You’ll enjoy the sounds of birds and frogs, the calm of the river, and the raw beauty of the jungle forest. The property is located within the protected natural area “Cordillera Escalera,” home to several natural waterfalls and even a natural thermal bath between Tarapoto and our town. Two waterfalls are accessible on foot from the town.

This is an ideal place for nature lovers, creatives, and anyone seeking tranquility, connection, and a slower rhythm of life

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

The house is non-smoking indoors, so smoking is only allowed outside. We also ask that you respect the peaceful and harmonious energy of the place.

Ideally, we are looking for people who can stay for the full 7 months, as continuity is important for the animals and the land. However, we are also open to shorter stays, so please don’t hesitate to write to us even if you are available for a shorter period—we are happy to discuss possibilities.

Before our departure, we would ideally like to spend about one week together with the house sitters. During this time, we will explain the daily routines for the animals and the garden, show you the neighborhood, and share the specificities of the house and the land.

Please note: our neighbor is responsible for cleaning the shared spaces (the Maloka, cabins, and outdoor kitchen), and some workers help with the maintenance of the land. You may occasionally see them on the property, which is completely normal.

One last important point: until April it is the wet season in the jungle. Days can sometimes be very rainy and the river can rise. At the same time, it is a beautiful period for observation, introspection, and meditation—the Amazon is incredibly green, vibrant, and alive during this season.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

Paradise on Earth

Since the day I arrived, I frankly couldn't believe I was in the Amazon crossing the river to get home. :) The house is surrounded by the river, but in a hill don't worry, and mounts covered of jungle. You will be like dreaming every day, as I was, amazed by the views. Alexa and Wale welcomed me and made company for almost a week. Aurélie and Mabe arrived the previous day of my departure. All 4 are great: very kind, friendly, patient and calm...as good Peruvians, even though Aurélie wasn't born in the country. They were in contact for anything I needed. Animals are very easy to treat and care. Oso and Durga are the best companions one can imagine. They even go with you to clean the corral. Arya and Mily are beautiful too. They let you cuddle them since the very first day and like to be outside, even though Arya sleeps inside. Hens and roosters are good companions too. They will surround you if you spend time in the garden. Animals are very grateful. :) Ah, don't be afraid of dangerous animals because Durga and Oso take care of you. I didn't see anything, just a small lizard and 2 very tiny snakes, like long worms. Last but not least...it is easy to get to Tarapoto. It is one hour, but you can take a lift on the 'tolva' (behind part) of a pick up car by 5 soles (4 soles = 1€). It is very common. It is one of the best experiences I have had in my life. On the route you can enjoy all the Cordillera Escalera with its spectacular landscapes. For shopping you have a small shop in San Jose, sometimes they have some fruit at El Gato. Otherwise, Tarapoto is full of markets. I recommend you to walk from Plaza de Armas to Mercado 2, from there walk 2 streets down to Tahuantinsuyo. There are people selling food all along the street to Mercado El Huequito. To go and come back from Tarapoto take the tolva to óvalo (roundabout) El Periodista. From there another 5-7 soles to Plaza de Armas in a mototaxi. I am vegan and there are restaurants with vegan options in Tarapoto. I went twice to Mantra, but there is another vegetarian down the street. Check www.happycow.com . The area is very safe, but don't be overconfident, always be attentive but calm. Anything can happen anywhere. I don't want to forget Alex, the builder. He was a really nice companion during my stay. Neighbours are amazing too! Please, try to go to the cascades when it is not raining. There are many around the house and are unbelievable! I just had time to go to 2 of them because of work and rain. I went in the rainy season, the full month of January. Please, go and enjoy the Peruvian Paradise and nice people! You don't have an idea what you are missing. :)

Wonderful, wonderful adventure in a peaceful setting

Mabe and Aurelie are the most wonderful owners, organised, practical, kind, warm hearted and very supportive during the whole sitting. We spent three months in this very wild and remote setting, nestled next to the jungle, swimming in the river and taking care of their lovely animals. As well as Aurelie and Mabe being on hand to answer questions and helping with anything that arises, they have a full time worker on the land and the neighbours are wonderful. This is a very special place with very special people who are very much a part of our extended family now! We will be back!
