About this assignment

Kind, honest, liberal responsible human who loves nature and pets. We have one 14 year old dog. My home is in the county and garbage and recycling need to be taken out. We have composting on site.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Feed and care for one 69 pound friendly dog. There is a dog door so she lets herself in and out. Take care of house. There is a pond with fish who need to be fed a few times a week. There is a hot tub so you will need to add some chemicals occasionally.

What are the good features of the property and location

Very private yet close to hiking trails, single track bike trails, rivers, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the city of Knoxville, TN., The house has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, lots of porch space (covered and uncovered), an extra strawbale house/play house. Large fenced yard. Home is on 20 acres. Local restaurants and breweries within 7 minute drive.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

The dog is 69 pounds- very sweet, but afraid of thunder storms and fireworks. The house is down a long driveway and private from neighbors. A car would be helpful, but with planning Uber or Lift etc. can be used. You will need to take out your garbage and recycling, but we will tell you where to take it. We are Vegetarian and ask you not to cook meat in our pots and pans, but we don’t care if you eat meat. The dog does.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

East Tennessee Nature House

Terrin and her husband are kind and thoughtful. They showed me around town, introduced me to friends, and treated me to a fun dinner. They provided a parking pass to a nearby nature center, and suggested other hiking trails. They also provided excellent home-roasted coffee, and offered to put me up in a hotel when the air conditioner broke during a heat wave. Nola, the dog, is a gentle soul who suffers anxiety during thunderstorms, especially at night. Floyd, the cat, is mostly nocturnal, independent, and asserts his alpha status from time to time. Terrin is very organized, having laid out medications with instructions in easy reach. She even pre-bagged food and labeled by feeding time. She patiently answered all my questions. The home is surrounded by lush gardens, making it easy to feel one with nature. Deer visited some evenings. Composting is available onsite, while the garbage and recycling drop-off is nearby.

Knox rocks! Three weeks of ease and comfort in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains.

For my years of house sitting around the country (and a bit beyond) I’ve always been selective about timing and locations. This one came up as a perfect fit - relatively new area to me but I knew of the beauty of the area and that Knoxville had a vibrant music and food scene. What I didn’t know was how much better-than-perfect Terrin and Billy’s home and pets would make this assignment. Although I did get out for a considerable amount of music - with Downtown being only an easy 15-minute drive away - many evenings I was more than happy to hang out at their beautiful ridge top home and simply enjoy. The peace. The wildlife. The space. The stars. The walks with sweet Nola (Hey, we all make mistakes occasionally. I’m sure that the broken water pipe was not intentional!). The selective attention of Floyd. The night fire pit time in their company. All of this and being welcomed into their community of wonderful friends over the three-week stay. As with all the best places my travels take me to, this is a place I left with a longer to-do list than I arrive with. And I look forward to returning to do that again. Terrin and Billy have created a special place and I’m grateful for being able to step into it and sit quietly for awhile.
