About this assignment

Reliable, trustworthy couple with drive and enthusiasm to look after and care for our lovely house and vegetable garden and 4 cats from 4 Feb to roughly 14 March 2026.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Feeding 4 cats, twice a day. Keeping the house clean and tidy. Watering the vegetable patch and any newly planted shrubs and plants daily. Regular weeding of the vegetable patch and generally keeping an eye on the land and fruit trees. Depending on the weather, once a week to irrigate the land (~1/2 acre) using the acequia system (instructions given)

What are the good features of the property and location

We have a beautifully-restored traditional Andalucian farmhouse with several terraces giving amazing views over the Sierra Nevada and Sierra Lujar mountains. There are many fruit trees and a well-maintained vegetable garden. House-sitters are welcome to eat vegetables and fruit growing in the garden. There is a washing machine available to house-sitters and we have a good broadband connection.

The Cortijo (farmhouse) is located in the countryside about a 25 min walk from the vibrant, alternative town of Orgiva, which is the capital of the Alpujarra region. There are many pretty mountain villages nearby and we are only about 35 minutes drive from the Mediterranean coast with several attractive small resorts. The historic city of Granada is only 1 hour away by car.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

Whether you like gardening and are prepared to keep weeds under control in the veggie patch. Whether you are allergic to cats. The weather is usually nice and warm during the daytime in Feb/March but it does get cold at night. There is a log-burning stove in the lounge and gas stoves in the bedrooms, which you are welcome to use.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

What a special place to be

We house sat for Michelle and Philip in August/September 2023. With fewer animal responsibilities than other pet sits, we could concentrate on the land around the cortijo which was very satisfying as we could then enjoy the fruits of our labours. The house is very comfortable and with a pool and a roof terrace to watch the stars, what more could one want? Michelle and Philip are lovely people and the communication is clear and instructive. We came as sitters and left as.friends.
