About this assignment

We need someone to care for our cats, garden and plants who enjoys caring for green things and cats. We have a large garden, a lot of potted plants and a salt water filter swimming pool

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Our house sitters should love cats and know how to communicate with them. We have 2 cats; Yusuf, the ginger by the door and lounging on the treadmill. He is an indoor/outdoor cat who likes to hang around people but isn't a lap cat, Big Boy, another ginger who hangs around outside, loves to be petted and brushed and is a big bully who would love to be an only cat. You will also be caring for all our plants, the garden and pool which means daily pool skimming, patio cleaning and plant watering. We have weekly pool cleaning and housekeeping services and gardeners who come monthly.

What are the good features of the property and location

We have high speed internet and seldom have power outages or other problems that would affect internet service. There is a Walmart, a large pharmacy and a hardware store within walking distance - 3 blocks. Major bus routes into Centro and north to the malls are a block from the house. You will be staying in the casita which is pictured in the photos.
Merida is a large colonial city, the capital of the state of Yucatan. It's located 45 minutes from the gulf coast and the port town of Progreso and 1 1/2 hours from Chichen Itza. Our house is located 1 block from the main boulevard that goes to Centro and out to Progreso. Public transportation running into Centro and North to the beaches is a block away.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

As previously mentioned, Merida is in the tropical zone with temperatures 8 months of the year in the high 80's (26+ c) and 90's (32+c). Rainy season starts in June and the humidity can be very high with frequent afternoon showers. The casita has 3 mini-split AC's and ceiling fans throughout. Spanish is helpful but not necessary. Our housekeeper doesn't speak English but she knows what to do and you can always use google translate to communicate. There is a large active expat community here in Merida and the best way to get in touch is the Merida English Library (MEL) located in Centro on Calle 53.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

Testimonials

Highly recommended!

We had an excellent stay in Evonne's lovely casita while taking care of her three cats. The casita was clean and comfortable, and Yusef, the only cat allowed indoors, was a breeze to care for. He is an early riser, so be prepared for some early mornings to let him out, but otherwise, it was a very easy sit. The other cats came around when they felt like it and one only came by the first few days. The responsibilities included some light landscaping and pool maintenance, but both tasks were quick and straightforward. To top it off, Evonne and Sam hosted us for a lovely meal on our final night; we truly enjoyed getting to know them better before we headed out. We would gladly sit for them again if the opportunity arose and highly recommend them to other housesitters!
