About this assignment
We are looking for a person, or preferably a couple, who love living in a quiet and peaceful rural location, and who would enjoy looking after our two young dogs, one cat, and six chickens.
What responsibilities are required of the house sitter
Our dogs, five year old Petit Bassett Griffon Vendéens, are quite happy being couch potatoes, but enjoy their daily walk in the countryside around our house. They are very strong physically, and can pull on the lead, so experienced walkers are needed and they cannot be let off the lead. They can be left on their own in the house for short periods, but prefer and are used to company. Our cat is an indoor cat, and prefers to stay in her own comfortable environment- she is very friendly and cuddly and will purr loudly while sitting on your lap. The chickens are easy to manage. They need letting out in the morning, topping up their food and water and collecting the eggs, and locking up at night. A weekly cleaning of the coop would be appreciated.
What are the good features of the property and location
The house is a 200 year old restored farmhouse set in its own grounds on the edge of a very small village. We are surrounded by farmland. There are several small towns within a ten kilometre radius with supermarkets and a few general shops. There is a small ace bar and restaurant 1 kilometre away. The house is centrally heated (LPG), and comfortably appointed,so it is warm and toasty in winter, and we have wifi throughout the house. Widescreen TV’s and hundreds of DVD’s and books so you won’t be bored. There is hot tub in the garden - you may enjoy stargazing, but unfortunately the swimming pool will be out of commission. The guest room is slightly separate from the rest of the house. A car is also available if you are travelling long distance and do not have your own.
What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment
If you are looking for museums and art galleries or fancy restaurants this is not for you. Rural France is very quiet in the spring, but you can still enjoy good food and wine from the supermarkets and local markets. The weather is usually very pleasant but equally there can be some cool days and rain. We would prefer a couple or person who is happy to relax in the house, and keep our pets company.

Superb sitting
Although it was the middle of winter, and very cold and frosty when I arrived, the farmhouse was warm and comfortable and very well equipped. It had everything I would need for an extended stay. My first priority was getting to know the dogs, Scott and Shaun, and the cat, Finette. Scott was very friendly right from the start but Shaun was more cautious and took a little longer than his brother to become less wary of me, but after a good walk and a few treats he relaxed and settled down. The farmhouse is on the edge of fields and it was possible to walk many kilometres in various directions and together with the dogs I enjoyed many long walks. I was warned that although quite small, the dogs were very strong and needed a firm hand. I soon discovered this was true and because of wildlife in the fields ( deer, pheasants and hares) I had to keep good hold of them. The cat Finette was very friendly right from the start. The chickens too were not a problems and provided me with many eggs. In addition, the neighbors were very nice and forgiving of my poor English. I enjoyed my stay and the peace and quiet and would be happy to come again.
