About this assignment

Looking for someone or a couple who will take good care of my home and look after my dog (Rue) while I am away. Prefer sitter(s) who is/are quiet, responsible, and cleans up after themself/selves. Also environmentally conscientious and low impact. I would like to come home to a happy dog and a house that is at least as clean as it was when I left it.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Feed and walk Rue in the morning and evening. Throw the ball for her and give her lots of love. Water indoor and outdoor plants every few days. Feed fish in backyard pond 1-2 times daily. Make yourself at home while you are here but please clean up after yourself.

What are the good features of the property and location

Highly desirable location in town in Mariposa in walking distance to grocery stores, post office, library, cafes, museums, restaurants, and YARTS bus stop (Amtrak connection). Full kitchen, washing machine (no dryer but it doesn't take long to air dry), fenced back yard with patio table and grill, carport, all the amenities of home (since it's my home). Convenient base from which to visit Yosemite National Park by car or bus. Also hiking, biking, swimming, and other outdoor activities in the adjacent foothills.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

It's fine if you plan to spend the days in Yosemite or out and about elsewhere, as long as you are there to feed the dog in the morning and feed & walk her in the evening. She would also love to accompany you on adventures, but in Yosemite dogs are limited to paved paths. She has a dog door to the back yard so she can let herself outside as needed when home alone. Rue is an 8-year old lab mix (border collie maybe?) who LOVES playing ball. She is super friendly but needs a strong hand when out walking if she spots a cat she wants to chase. Exact start and end dates may have some flex, so feel free to let me know what you are looking for.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

Testimonials

Great pup, awesome location.

First of all, Rue is a real love. She is nothing but love and companionship. It was hard leaving her after our visit. Nicole is a good host, welcoming all into her home. She is great at keeping up communication and making her expectations clear. She is very environmentally conscious, which we learned from and appreciated. Best part of the trip is the opportunity to explore Yosemite. We had never been before and we drove the hour or so into the park almost everyday. We brought Rue with us a few times - she is great in the car - but be aware that dogs are only allowed in PAVED areas of the park, not on trails.

Caring for Dutchess

What a fantastic first experience for me. Nicole was so organized and communicative so I was never unsure about the expectations. The home was perfectly situated within walking distance to the quaint town of Mariposa while Yosemite’s close proximity is an extra bonus. Dutchess was just a sweet charmer with her big eyes & she seemed genuinely pleased to have me care for her; she loves people. I had a great time during my mini vacation and hope there will be a next time.

The Perfect Gig

Nicole has a huge heart! She made us so comfortable welcoming us into her wonderful home. Adopting an older deaf dog can take some getting used to, but Dutchess is so loving and mellow it must have been easy to fall in love. Dutchess’ court is a lovely, quiet backyard with grapes, goji berries and a fish pond. Inside, her throne allows her to keep an eye on the comings and goings of her subjects. Dutchess loves every person and dog that strolls past and when she's sitting in the front yard will rush over to greet them.  The little town of Mariposa has everything one could want even during Yosemite’s off-season, all within walking distance. This was the perfect gig for us. We were able to alternate days hiking in Yosemite National Park with resting and showering Dutchess with attention.  I have to say it's pretty cool walking through a small town where the locals know your dog’s name.
