About this assignment

We're looking for someone dependable, who wouldn't mind sending us pictures and updates to keep our minds at ease. We would request that any potential sitter chat with us over a brief video call to prior to securing the sit.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

We have 2 affectionate cats, Scout and Atticus, who are getting up there in age but spry, nonetheless. They are both indoor and outdoor cats, and will remind you often that they can't make up their minds. We also have a small flock of chickens and ducks, who share a coop. The birds are currently free range, so we let them out of the coop in the morning, and back in at night. We're currently working on building them a run, which would make their care even less hands on, just food and water fill ups. Don't forget some occasional cuddles for the cats too :)

What are the good features of the property and location

Just up the road from us is a nice loop trail to a small waterfall. Nearby you'll find tons of hiking trails, rock climbing, rail trails for biking, swimming holes, and all sorts of outdoor recreation possibilities. We also have kayaks and a canoe to lend. We're 10 minutes outside of Keene, where you will find plenty of coffee shops, restaurants and other cultural festivities. The Monadnock region is known for its picturesque quaint New England villages. Mountains, beaches and cities can all be visited with a day trip from our home.

This would be an especially great fit for families, as we have two small kids ourselves and everything families need to feel at home, including a play room, lots of toys, a baby crib and supplies, etc. Bonus are the egg hunts in the morning.

We have high speed internet for those working remotely.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

We need to bring a bucket of water out to the chicken coop once a day. During winter, they're housed up on a small hill about 500 feet from the house, where we fill up their 5 gallon water bucket. Other than that, they're really easy to manage, and even someone with no experience in farm animals would be absolutely fine. We can leave detailed instructions, or welcome someone to stay here a day or two before our travel dates, in order to orient them better.

Sitters are welcome to anything in the kitchen, just letting us know if anything runs out so we can restock, as needed. We have kayaks, bikes and other outdoor gear to share. We want this to feel like your home away from home!

We're generally flexible with our travel dates, and we're just looking to get away for awhile, so let us know what works for you.

Can I bring my own pets?

Yes
Restrictions: Dogs that get along with cats and chickens would be welcome

A bucolic farm

This is a very pleasant small farm in a great area. Emily and Danny were very helpful, providing notes on the house and animals and responding quickly to my questions. (They also have a lot of good books in the house, though i brought my own.) One of the cats, Atticus, is very affectionate and might be happy to be petted for hours. The other, Scout, is perfectly friendly and likes to be petted briefly, but she’s also happy to spend a lot of time outside. The chickens come down from the coop area to hang out by the house during the day, which is entertaining. The ducks are not as companionable, but they’re easy and quacky and they did seem to get more relaxed with me as time went on. The handsome sheep are no trouble and a bit friendly, but mostly in pursuit of food. The house is a charming and rambling old farmhouse, and the town of Keene nearby has a lot to offer. I went to a cafe there every other day or so, and there’s a very good independent bookstore and some nice restaurants. I also did a couple easy hikes at ponds/lakes nearby, and I saw loons on one of them! All in all, my two weeks at the farm were very enjoyable—I loved sitting on the deck with the chickens foraging around, looking up the little slope to the pasture where the sheep were grazing.
