About this assignment
Hi,
We're looking for someone (or a couple, or a family) to take care of our 2 kittens & 2 chickens. The dog sometimes comes with us. The kittens will be cats and allowed out by winter.
What responsibilities are required of the house sitter
We will be gone for 8-10 days (but expect you to arrive the day before) in feb, 4/5 in November. In Feb we take the dog with us, in November we don't. Mazy loves walks and games, she's very well trained. The chickens (Samsung & Galaxy) need water and food as well. The kittens have each other for company but are great purring-on-lap companions. They might still stay inside, so then you need to clean the catlitter. Coming sooner or staying longer is probably no problem the apartment is free at the moment.
What are the good features of the property and location
You have your own appartment above our house, simple but fully equiped (is a rental) for 4 people. Lake Balaton is 12 km, Budapest is 1 hour by car or by (direct) train. Railway station at 5 km. Berhida is a small, rural village but with all necessary stuff. The roe deer are always around when you go out of the garden (even visible from the house). Many lovely walks & bicicle rides in the area.The wood-sauna is functional as well as the swimming pond (will be cold). Hungary has many beautiful things to offer at short distance of our home, while Berhida itself offers peace and quiet.
What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment
In Budapest English is spoken everywhere, in Berhida somewhat less, but you'll manage (google translate helps). Hungarian is really difficult. Many older people speak German as well.
Can I bring my own pets?
Yes
Restrictions: if they're very nice to cats, our cats are used to a dog, the garden is fenced.

Staying with delightful Mazy in Hungary
I was very pleased to have this house sitting experience in the Hungarian countryside. I looked after Gaby and Gert’s border collie Mazy and chicken Samsung for a few days in May 2025. I stayed in the guest apartment, walked in the fields with Mazy, watered the plants, collected eggs from Samsung and swam in the natural pool in the garden. With Gert’s excellent bike I was able to explore some of the local area and shop for food in the nearby town. Before they left, Gaby showed me Lake Balaton and some local walks, and she and Gert invited me to share some delicious meals and enjoyable conversations. Mazy is the most delightful dog, playful, intelligent and well behaved and it was hard to say goodbye to her at the end of the sit.

Friendliest dog ever!
Gaby and Geert were very good hosts. Good communication, clear instructions and helpful attitude. Gaby was welcoming me with dinner, which was very-very kind and even asked in advance whether I follow any diet. Mazy, the bordercollie was amazing. Very well trained, very kind, playful, not pushy, not stealing food, not claiming and still happy! :) First time ever I've slept in the same room as a dog, and Mazy was so kind and easy that I was not bothered at all in my sleep. We had lovely walks on the fields nearby, very good area to take some nice walks. I recommend this sit to everyone who likes countryside and dogs!
