About this assignment
Hi,
We're regularly looking for someone (or a couple, or a family) to take care of our 2 cats & chicken. The dog generally comes with us.
What responsibilities are required of the house sitter
We will be gone for 8-10 days (but expect you to arrive the day before) in March. The chicken need water and food as well. The cats have each other for company but are great purring-on-lap companions, they have a cat-door and roam around and like to be fed 2x daily. Coming sooner or staying longer is probably no problem the apartment is free at the moment. Some plants need water too.
What are the good features of the property and location
You have your own apartment above our house, simple but fully equipped (is a rental) for 4 people. Lake Balaton is 12 km, Budapest is 1 hour by car or by (direct) train. In winter the ski area (small but nice) in Epleny is also great. From our property many nice hikes are possible. We have a real wood sauna with an ecological pond to jump in afterwards.
What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment
In Budapest English is spoken everywhere, in Berhida somewhat less, but you'll manage (google translate helps). Hungarian is really difficult. Many older people speak German as well. Berhida is a quiet village, nearest town at 12 km is also small (Varpalota).
Can I bring my own pets?
Yes
Restrictions: if they're very nice to cats but leave them alone (not jumping at them, cats don't think that's polite), our cats are used to a dog, the garden is fenced.

Serene stay
Our stay with Gaby and her husband was very pleasant We arrived in Budapest the evening prior and stayed at a nice hotel with the view of the parlament and walked around .. the city is very safe and clean We took the train the next day and were met by Gaby who invited us to a nice barbecue diner We stayed in a nice 2bedroom . apartement above her place . The house itself is in the middle of the country… open field in the back where you can see deers at night , a pool and a nice sauna The animals are lovely and easy to take care of . Mazy is super smart, well trained and sensitive …she loves her owners very much . We took her bed in our room and let her be herself . Throwing her the ball every 2 mn will make her happy .. the cats are also very endearing Gaby let us use the bikes to go visit the beautiful lake . This house sitting was quite enjoyable and is best for those who like nature as it’s quite remote from the city I would go back on a heart beat!

Staying with delightful Mazy in Hungary
I was very pleased to have this house sitting experience in the Hungarian countryside. I looked after Gaby and Gert’s border collie Mazy and chicken Samsung for a few days in May 2025. I stayed in the guest apartment, walked in the fields with Mazy, watered the plants, collected eggs from Samsung and swam in the natural pool in the garden. With Gert’s excellent bike I was able to explore some of the local area and shop for food in the nearby town. Before they left, Gaby showed me Lake Balaton and some local walks, and she and Gert invited me to share some delicious meals and enjoyable conversations. Mazy is the most delightful dog, playful, intelligent and well behaved and it was hard to say goodbye to her at the end of the sit.

Friendliest dog ever!
Gaby and Geert were very good hosts. Good communication, clear instructions and helpful attitude. Gaby was welcoming me with dinner, which was very-very kind and even asked in advance whether I follow any diet. Mazy, the bordercollie was amazing. Very well trained, very kind, playful, not pushy, not stealing food, not claiming and still happy! :) First time ever I've slept in the same room as a dog, and Mazy was so kind and easy that I was not bothered at all in my sleep. We had lovely walks on the fields nearby, very good area to take some nice walks. I recommend this sit to everyone who likes countryside and dogs!
