The house sitter(s) need to be able to handle and have experience with big, active dogs. They need to be attentive with good reflexes during the walks because our huskies tend to get excited around wildlife and pull the walker.
If possible, we would like for the house sitter to come at least a day before the house-sitting begins to meet the dogs and get familiar with them, get a tour of our home, and see where everything is located within the house (dog food, leashes, extra treats, and more).
About our happy huskies:
We have two dogs, Roy & Faroe, both unique in their own ways but overall great companions and an integral part of our family.
Roy:
In general Roy is an alpha and will leave others alone if they leave him alone, but to be more detailed:
1) He is not a fan of random people coming up to pet him, so if people ask if they can pet him, just say no.
2) He doesn’t fare well with other dogs, especially little ones running between his legs - he doesn’t bite, he just warns them by growling.
3) If you do have an interaction with another dog which is possible, just pull him closer to you and continue walking.
4) He may need a little bit more time warming up to you so just use treats and be positive with him - he works WAY better with positive reinforcement.
5) He doesn’t have toys in the house so there is no worry of him being possessive of a toy here
6) He is triggered by prey - squirrels, geese, cats, etc.. but he’ll usually only pull if they run close by him and a lot of the time he seems indifferent to them.
7) In general at home, he likes to have his own space and is extremely low maintenance. If he comes up to you and wants to be pet then it is fine to pet him, otherwise it is better to let him be.
Faroe:
In general she is the sweetest and most loving dog you can ever imagine, and she has been a very positive influence on Roy:)
Her two main issues:
1) She tends to be excited about wildlife and can pull on walks - it helps to give her a few good tugs at the beginning of the walk to show her you are in charge.
2) When you leave the house please make sure to not leave anything on the floor because she can get anxious and eat it.
Final note:
We don't want to scare you away with these specific details about each dog, we just think it makes sense to be 100% transparent about our dogs. The truth is that all of the people that have watched our dogs for an extended period of time have never had any issues with them, and end up saying how much they have fallen in love with not only Faroe, but also with Roy being the giant, gentle soul that he is.
No, sorry.
