Make the Berkshires Home — Beautiful House Sit January–July

About this assignment

I’m looking for a responsible, easygoing person or couple who would enjoy making my home their home base while I’m traveling. I don’t have pets, so the main thing I’m looking for is someone who will enjoy living here and care about my home while I’m away. You don’t need to be here 24/7 (and I certainly don’t expect you to put your life on hold!). Ideally, I’d like someone who is here an average of 4–5 days a week, although there’s flexibility.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

The biggest things are keeping the house occupied and cared for, watering my plants, and letting me know if anything needs attention. If a repair comes up, I’d ask you to help coordinate access with the appropriate person; I would, of course, pay for repairs unless there was damage caused by the sitter. I’ll arrange and pay for snow removal and yard care—you’d just make sure those things are happening as needed. I’m asking the sitter to cover utilities while living here, and I’m happy to provide average costs ahead of time.

What are the good features of the property and location

My home is in a lovely, quiet residential neighborhood in the Northern Berkshires, just a few minutes from Williamstown and North Adams. It’s a comfortable 3-bedroom, 2-bath home with two queen bedrooms, an office, cathedral ceilings in the living room, wood-plank ceilings, a dining area adjacent to the kitchen, laundry, a deck, and a beautiful yard.

The location is one of my favorite things about living here. Williams College is about 3 minutes away, MASS MoCA and MCLA are about 10 minutes away, and the Clark Art Institute is nearby. For people who love being outdoors, Mount Greylock, the Appalachian Trail, the Hoosic River and lots of hiking and walking trails are close by. One of my favorite places to walk, the Spruces, is about a 10-minute walk from the house.

We’re also tucked right near the Vermont and New York borders, so there’s a lot to explore. Bennington, Vermont is an easy drive, Boston is about 2½ hours away, and Albany is about an hour away, where you can catch the train to New York City (2.5-hour trip). It’s a wonderful home base for exploring New England and the Northeast.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

This is probably best suited to someone looking for a comfortable home base rather than someone who plans to travel continuously during the assignment. I don’t expect you to be here every day, but I would like the house to be occupied an average of 4–5 days a week, with flexibility for trips and time away.

Sitters will be responsible for the utilities they use while living here, and I’m happy to share typical monthly costs before we make any commitment. My car will remain stored in the one-car garage, so parking will be in the driveway.

Most importantly, I’m looking for someone who will treat the house as their home while I’m gone—enjoy it, take good care of it, and be willing to keep an eye on things and communicate with me if anything comes up.
