A week in Puglia caring for our Yorkie, Benny

About this assignment

Someone conscientious who loves and knows how to care for a small dog. They should also be respectful of the property and the neighborhood as we live in a historic center with many neighbors.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Primary responsibility is to feed, walk and give love to Benny whom we saved from a shelter after he was abandoned by his original family. This will be the first time both my husband and I will travel, leaving him alone. We don’t want him to feel that he has been abandoned again. Grateful for also watering the plants as needed in the terraces and garden.

What are the good features of the property and location

Nardo is a beautiful Baroque town in the Salento region of Puglia 10-15 minutes drive from the sea—a stunning sea indeed with crystal clear waters, beaches, lidos, rocky shores (great for snorkeling)—and surrounded by other charming towns and villages that are fun to visit. October is usually a glorious month here, sunny and warm with sea temperatures still very pleasant.

The house is in the historic center with a large 15th c walled garden. You will be staying in a newly renovated apartment (still a work in progress) with a large outdoor terrace and direct access to the garden.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

Benny is very attached to me and will be depressed at least for a day or two. But he loves people, playing and snuggling — hates other male dogs, cats and pigeons all of which are in plentiful supply around town and in the garden. You will need to keep an eye on him in the garden as he is a true terrier and obsessed about driving out unwanted creatures including on the neighboring roof!

The apartment is still being renovated. It’s semi furnished and the bathroom and equipment is in good working order. The kitchen is not yet done but hopefully will be by end October. If not the use of the kitchen in the downstairs house can also be arranged.
