About this assignment

Hello, I'm looking for a single woman to stay in my apartment and care for my cat, Gracie, container garden and care for the hummingbirds. Pretty simple and you get to enjoy living near the largest lake in Mexico in a vibrant community. We boast to be one of the planet's best climates here in Ajijic, Mexico.
I'm looking for someone who will adapt to and enjoy the culture of Mexican living. Simple, vibrant and sometimes noisy. There is so much to do here whatever your interests.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

Gracie, is an indoor/oudoor cat. There's no litter box to clean. She gets wet food twice a day and dry all day. She'll sleep on the bed with you and likes affection.
Depending on the weather, the plants will need water daily. The indoor plants only need water every 5 days. The hummingbird feeder needs to be cleaned and refilled every three days. It's pretty simple. I just like my plants to be well cared for and the hummingbirds are a joy to watch on my large terrace that has a mountain view.

What are the good features of the property and location

The apartment is a lovely one level 2 bedroom, with a nice kitchen, granite countertops, large bathroom, second floor, nice neighbors, indoor laundry, 35 minute walk to Ajijic center and the lake. It's a 3 minute walk to the produce store and store with Costco type products. There are restaurants and food places 10-15 minutes walk away. The bus is 3 minute walk from my house that can take you to the town center if you don't feel like walking. I have WiFi and Netflix. The apartment is 6 years old and the landlord is wonderful and would help if anything needs attention.
I have the beautiful view of the mountains from my terrace and the living room. When it rains, it's great to watch the lightning from the couch. But it is sunny most days and in the 70's and 80'sF year round. There are lots of expats living in this town, and lots of wonderful art galleries, restaurants and cultural activities. The town is 35 minutes (when no traffic) from Guadalajara, the second larges city in Mexico. There is good public transportation. I have lived here 4 years without a car.
Also, I am a single woman and I find this area to be quite safe.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

You need to be a single female, be able to stay from September 14-October 15, be clean, honest, trustworthy, non-smoker, no drugs, no overnight guests, no drama, a good neighbor, and want to live a tranquil life in Mexico. I do not have a car, so you will need to be able to walk on cobblestone streets.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

Peaceful stay in Ajijic

From the start, Michal was an absolute joy to connect with. She was clear in seeking someone who would integrate respectfully into the local customs of the village, which resonated with my own intentions. I came to Ajijic to attend a retreat with a spiritual teacher, continue my Spanish studies, and experience the magic of a small-town. Michal went above and beyond to help me land smoothly, introducing me to her language tutor (a wonderful resource), showing me around the local markets, and pointing out gems that only a local would know. I’m especially grateful for the time we shared before her departure—it made the transition into the sit feel all the more welcoming and personal. The housesit itself was simple and restorative—mainly caring for plants, which gave me ample space to settle in and explore. Having two bedrooms and two bathrooms made it super easy to settle in without infringing on Michal's space. I loved sitting out on the balcony to watch the hummingbirds and observe the hibiscus flowers in bloom. It was also wonderful to connect with neighbors (especially Lauren across the street), and I always felt safe walking on my own. I never had any issues around the area or with the apartment, other than a leak beneath the sink, which was promptly attended to by the landlords! Despite being in different time zones, Michal was always easy to reach. Leaving was harder than expected, which is always a sign of a meaningful experience. I’m immensely grateful to Michal for her trust, generosity, and the thoughtful way she stewards her home and her relationships. It was a very restorative time for me and I look forward to returning in the future :) Thanks again! Leah

Great home owner!

Michelle and I clicked right away. We were on the same page as far as communication was concerned and she had ready answers for all of my questions. Michelle had 2 sheets on the fridge with emergency information for her cat, people I could phone to ask questions if something came up, and addresses for local stores and other places of interest. Her apartment is warm and comfortable and I felt welcomed and at home. Her cat, Gretchen, is one of the most loving and accepting kitties I've ever met and I hated to leave her.

Very enjoyable pet/housesitting experience had!

Being at Michelle's home taking care of her precious little Gretchen as well as her plant life was a real treat! I had the opportunity to have an extended housesitting adventure at her home the summer of 2015. Her place is not too big and ultra-comfy. I enjoyed breakfast on her patio area with Gretchen each morning as well as the neighborhood during mid-morning hikes. Everything you might need is within close reach and her neighbors that I did get to meet were very friendly. I kept up with Michelle via email. It was nice to be able to share pictures and updates with her on during her trip.
