About this assignment

I am looking for an adventurous couple (or 1 person) with a big love for animals. They must not be easily scared, tough enough to handle an earthquake, soft enough to talk to my pets like they were little humans :).
Besides that, if you, or one of you is handy fixing things, that is a big plus!
Also it would be good if you know how to ride a scooter or at least are willing to learn this, since we have no other transport around here.

I live here for 18+ years. I have 2 rescue dogs, and 3 cats (+ a few wild ones), a house and garden to look after.

I will leave 3th of April '26 and stay in Europe 6 months.
The housesit is a commitment these 6 month (179 days visa wise).

My house is basic, 3 bedrooms (guest room, my room and animal room where Putih sleeps and the animalfood is stored also, outside bathroom with cold water shower and western toilet and a better bathroom with hot water (if working) tied to my bedroom., and I love my outdoor kitchen with all you need to cook, indoor living room and small garden,
Guest room has 2 pers. bed and a fan. If you want to use my room with aircon, that's ok also, you will be more comfortable there.

You will have to take care of the payments of about €50 (depending on your electricity use) a month to cover electricity and internet bill. I pay all monthly online, the months you spend in my house, electricity and Internet have to be covered by you, I live on a very tight budget.
Internet is IDR 300.000 per month (30mbs), electricity depends on how much you use.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

My dogs, Putih and Mo, need two walks a day. Putih is streetwise and but she's getting old, her sight and hearing isn't 100% anymore. I put her on the leash when we walk on the road, on the beach, she can go free. Once free, she will find her way home if you can't catch her anymore. Mo is not allowed to walk free at al. She was rescued 2023 when she was run over by a big truck and frankly has learned nothing from that ordeal. Mo is very active, Jack Russel type, and with her 3 legged body she's fast as the wind :)
MO doesn't support heat very much, so no walking when sun is out and burning.
Early mornings we go to the beach, watch sunrise, wait for the fishermen to arrive and buy fish for the cats.
Putih a senior Bali dog now and has settled down a lot. She has kidney problem and is sometimes losing some urine where she sleeps , this means washing the sheet of her bed every when you notice it's happening, at the moment she's doing fine,
If this worries you, you can contact my previous housesitter about this, he's been taking care of her for 6 months. It is not a big deal, she sleeps most of the time and stays on her blankets. She spends a lot of time in the garage also.
Then there are the cats, at the moment 3 of them.
Hookie and Catness (but you can call her Fatness ) (female) and Singgah (male), 2 sisters and brother.
They pretty much live their lives by themselves, they will come for some cuddling :) and will ask every afternoon for their food.
I cook fish for them, as for the dogs I cook chicken and rice.

There is always dry food and fresh water available for my animals. The bowls are kept full, fresh water every day.
In the night time I hide the food, so the wild cats don't come and steal.

Besides that, other tasks are keeping the house clean and water the garden (dry season twice a day, mornings and evenings), feed the fish and keep the pond and garden clean.
Normally I takes me around one or two hours a day to walk the dogs and keep the house and garden up to date. I have to sweep or vacuum and mop the floor, clean the kitchen (which is outside) and garden every day, it's not a lot of work, but because the house is 'open', a quick sweep every day is something that needs to be done, besides taking care of the furry family.
Of course all is done with love and respect, if you break stuff try to fix it or let me know so I can arrange a solution.
On Sunday, the cleaning lady will come a few hours for cleaning bathrooms and do a good floor wash through the whole house.
I will pay her.

What are the good features of the property and location

Opposite of my house there are few local shops where you can buy all basics. At 1.5 km are ATM, western and local supermarkets.
My village in Amed area, at the feet of the holy mount Agung, Bali. Here is THE diving spot of Bali. We still have breath taking reefs that makes this the perfect snorkelling spot and in the top 5 of worlds best diving spots.

The real Bali is still here. My house is near the beach, but it's not quiet since I live with the local people, you will be in midst of local life.
The Balinese children are a joy to watch, every day around sunset you will find them (and me) on the beach. Their smiles are a true source of energy! And the beach is lovely to chill.

The local people here like to chat with you and will ask you many questions out of curiosity. They are extremely friendly, and smile a lot. You will be invited to their homes for coffee ,food or drink arak.

We have NO crime at all here in my village!
As mentioned before, there's WIFI.

There are lots of "instagram" photo opportunities around, great daytours reachable by motorbike. You can't use the housebikes to do this, since they are old, not reliable enough and out of papers.
Few spots nearby to google:
Tirta gangga waterpalace
Maha gangga Valley
Lahangan Sweet
Lempuyang Temple complex
Ujung water palace
Rumah Pohon

Of course we have amazing dive and snorkel spots around, coral reefs and shipwrecks.

Google "Bali Amed" and you'll find lots of info about this place on earth there.

I still love discovering the area by motorbike, it's always an adventure, especially if you love to shoot photo's.
The Balinese love to pose for this.

I have an amazing group of friends that will help with any advice.
I always make an WhatsApp group for communication. We have an Amed Bali Community Facebook group where you can post any questions about Amed. Lots of expats know the answer for sure!

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

My village can be noisy. If you are easily offended by neighbours noise, that might be a problem. The real Bali is still here > this means I live in a primitive village, with uneducated people (mostly)
Mornings from 6:30 to 11 it can be busy in front of the house, people sell their fish and buy stuff in the 2 shops opposite of my house and nextdoor preschool in the mornings. The youngsters can have some loud motorbikes also but it is a village road, not a city road, so it's not constant traffic noise.
Between 11 and 15:00 it's normally quiet and slowly life will get more vibrant again from 15:00. Evenings after 7 pm it's normally quiet again. (unless there is a ceremony or a party... they can be pretty loud also)

For the past 5 years there has been promises that the road in front of my house will get an update, and same story for the land behind my house, building a hotel is planned but until this day nothing has happend. I can't guaranty building will start or might be happening.

Rainy season the beach has periods of many plastics, I organise cleanups with a few people on regular basis, but it can get overwhelming sometimes. Most locals don't seem to care about the plastic ending up on the beach and in the ocean.
I'm just trying to let you know, it's not all paradise here! Most of your time here it is dry season though.

We have no public transportation around here.
You really need to ride motorbike (the best transport for discovering the Amed area) or rent bicycle to get around!
I have 2 old motorbikes that you can use. They have no papers nor insurance and can only be used around Amed (from cullik to saraya, a stretch of about 30 km)
If you want to go sightseeing further, you need to rent a good motorbike, for about 60k a day or 800k a month.

My cats hunt, they catch rats, bats and mice and will sometimes put the leftovers of their feast in the house, BE WARNED!
Also, cockroaches are common here, the house is open, no way to not bump into one of those once in a while.

-Living on an island means also that sometimes the electricity is broken. Then you will have to improvise, no electricity means also that the water pump doesn't work, and of course internet is down then also. This doesn't happen very often anymore these days.

If after reading all this, and you are still interested in having a break of war-madness or other western world fearporn, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Peace and Love
Daphne

Can I bring my own pets?

Awesome location with adorable pets

Daphne is a very friendly host and it takes no effort to get along with her. The cats and dogs are very easy going and easy to cate for. I also love Amed as a location. The locals are very friendly and welcoming. The house is a comfortable and laid back spot very close to the beach. Those 6 months went by very fast and i would definitely go back!

A little taste of paradise.

I had the pleasure of spending 6 fantastic months looking after Daphnes house and her gang. It was a wonderful experience, which went far too quickly. Walking along the beach every day with Mo, morning and evening, or depending on the tide, afternoon, (something I miss already)…Putih did her own thing, sometimes came with us, most of the time, not, the glorious weather!! the crazy cats, the incredible people that live there, with their usual greeting, “ hello, where are you going” so incredibly friendly. Also a great place to see the sunrise, see the mysterious island appear as the sun comes up, before disappearing. Attending the odd ceremony, dressing up in local attire, many a coffee, and beer drunk with them. Barbecue on the beach, fresh fish, mainly mackerel. I have made some life long friends in Bali. Daphne is very honest in her description of the area. It is noisy, but from 10 at night, it goes very quiet, apart from the odd serenade by the local dogs!! It’s a very cozy house, good WiFi, pleasant place to spend a chill out evening. The area is stunning, beautiful scenery, warm seas. Worth hiring a scooter for the day, and go for a ride around. Places to visit a plenty. I hadn’t been diving for a long time, so took the opportunity to refresh myself. I can honestly say, one of most wonderful experiences of my life. The reefs are amazing, and the wrecks are just incredible. The various types of sea life that I saw, just took my breath away. The local restaurants are all very good, and cheap. It is also useful if you can ride a scooter, that literally is the main form of transport in Bali. I joined a very modern gym in Amed, (Lift Bali) about 5 kms away, where I was a regular user. There are also some lovely restaurants and bars near there, my favourite being the Chill Bar, opposite the gym. Bar on the beach, great place to see the sunset. Daphne’s friends are very welcoming and helpful should there be any problems. It was an incredible experience in Bali, for which I wish to thank Daphne for giving me the opportunity of looking after her place and accompanying animals. I have many memories that I will treasure, in a little piece of paradise. A place that I will most certainly return too.

A Snorkeler's Paradise

Daphne's back yard, literally, is a premiere snorkeling/scuba beach. I went almost every day and witnessed some of the most beautiful coral reef fish! You don't have to be a snorkel/scuba lover to be able to appreciate the beacher near Daphne's home. It is in a fishing village and the people are a close knit community. Because Daphne is quite beloved by her neighbors, I met lovely people in the village that were always helpful and welcoming. I stayed there for over 4 months, so I also joined a gym and had one of the most spectacular walks to get there. Cliffs, beautiful views and stunning blue water. There are several magnificent beaches, great restaurants and wonderful hiking experiences in the area. Daphne is the perfect communicator. She is very clear, always responds to any questions immediately and she will prep you with everything you need to know about the pets, home and the village. Now to the pets, suffice it to say, I fell in love with all of them. A longer pet sit really bonds you and I miss them all since I've been gone! They are very easy to read personalities, very affectionate and responsive and you will know each one's personality within a week. This pet sit is for the adventurer who truly wants a cultural and nature experience while taking care of a family of wonderful pets.

I looked after Daphne's home for five and half month. At that time she had one dog (Putih) and five "free-range" cats. Cats demanded very little, a food, water and a few cuddles. Putih wants to have her bi-daily walks on the beach and in the village. Easy and friendly pets to look after. Daphne's house is cosy, with a large living area, beautiful kitchen and a small garden to water. Surrounding is noisy but this was something she was very much upfront about. The place has good internet (but no cell phone network) and two nice local shops in a walking distance where you can buy your daily fruit and vegetable as well as fish. The area has a fairly large ex-pat community and many food places. The local beach is nice for swimming and there are a few good snorkelling beaches in a few km range. Communication with Daphne herself was clear and timely. she provided me with contacts of people who could help should anything go wrong. I enjoyed my time with Daphne's animals and in an authentic, Bali fishing village.

Amed, Bali

Daphne is the kindest, most loving house owner I have met so far. I had a few problems to deal with during my 2 month stay there but she was always available and always had solutions. The house is basic and the animals friendly. If you want to experience the real Bali and are understanding towards the concept that no day is the same then apply. I miss my morning coffee on the beach with the dogs watching the sunrise over Lombok.

Fun at Daphne's Zoo!

This was a wonderful housesit for me, staying at Daphne's place in Amed. The pets were great, especially my lovely girl Zoe who had to fly to Holland part way through my stay! :( Pikkie, Puti, Alfie and the cats were all a real delight. There were challenges too: the accommodation is basic and there are noise issues at certain times of the day (though daphne highlighted these to me before arrival). Positives were many though: amazing beaches, wonderful scenery, a very helpful support network of friends and neighbours. I really captured a flavour of living in a totally authentic rural Balinese environment - the rough and the smooth of it all. Daphne is a very generous person, she offered me use of her motorbike (i prefer walking), she was very supportive and has a great sense of down-to-earth humour. The sunrises in the morning were simply the best I've ever seen. Don't expect the Ritz-Carlton hotel, do expect a totally unique and great experience!

The most amazing pets in the world

Daphne's pets are full of charisma, joy and love. It was an amazing experience and a privilege to be chosen to look after them. your routine in the house will never be bored and you will appreciate the simple things in life. Her pets will be your best buddies especially if you are in the kitchen cooking something for you. They will look at you with their small and deep eyes and you feel that your dinner is just about to be shared. And in the morning they will wake you up gently reminding you that is time for exercise. Such a a great life! You are so lucky!
