About this assignment
Sanday Island, Orkney
Responsible, active and experienced dog sitter to feed, walk and generally keep company 3 friendly, very energetic Border Collies whilst family are away. Also tend to 2 guinea pigs.
7/8 October to 27/28 October 2024, exact dates to be confirmed.
What responsibilities are required of the house sitter
Taking care of and keeping house tidy. Making sure dogs are well attended, fed, watered and exercised. You will need to be fit and active. Best to have your own transport as beaches though plentiful are beyond reasonable walking distance. Car may be made available if you have insurance in place.
What are the good features of the property and location
Centre of island, 250m to shop,
House is modernised with electric heating and multi-fuel stove. No shortage of beautiful empty beaches for walks. Daily return ferries and flights to Orkney mainland.
What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment
Access from Scottish mainland takes a full day and two ferries. Flights from Kirkwall to the island are expensive but once here cheap island rate returns are available. Ferries are day return, twice daily.
Island has two shops catering for all needs and two excellent pubs serving sit-in and takeaway food.
Can I bring my own pets?

An introvert's dream!
I've had the pleasure of looking after David and Magda's lovely home and pets three times now, and I hope to keep coming back whenever our schedules align. They are friendly and easy going, and have always made me feel very welcome in their house. It's a pleasure to catch up with them at the beginning and end of the sit. Their home is tucked away on one of the most peaceful islands I've ever visited. Definitely not the place for extroverts or highly social people, but if you're into silence, peace and nature, and want to slow down in life, this island is perfect for a retreat. Dino, Mac, and Lossy have completely stolen my heart—they’re the sweetest, cuddliest, and smartest dogs I’ve ever cared for in my 19 years of house-sitting. I even have their photo as my phone screensaver because I miss them so much! They have a very easy routine and they're very easy to look after, provided you like long beach walks and can either play fetch with Lossy for the whole or your waking hours or somehow resist her disappointed puppy eyes. The house is warm and has everything you need (including lovely views!) and is walking distance from a well-stocked shop. Getting to and from the island can be a bit of a journey, but it's absolutely worth it.
