About this assignment

We require a non smoking couple who are active and enjoy the outdoor life. Please do not apply if you want to come on your own as we need 2 people due to safety issues on the croft. Due to our location and infrequent public transport a car is necessary.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

We have 13 chickens and 5 ducks. They need feeding twice a day, locking in their houses at night and their houses cleaning weekly.

We expect our home to be kept in a clean and tidy condition.

What are the good features of the property and location

Our home is situated in the north of the Isle of Skye between Portree and Dunvegan with far reaching views to the Outer Hebrides and easy access to all of Skye's attractions. Our croft land is steep and extends to the shore, a peaceful place where, otters, seals and sea birds can be seen. The house is a modern detached bungalow and sitters have the use of a double or twin guest bedroom. We have 2 lounges, both with sea views, one with a wood burning stove, TV, DVD, radio, superfast broadband wifi and digital piano. The kitchen is large and ideal for those who enjoy cooking/baking. We have books and maps and tourist information to help you make the most of your time here.
We are 2 miles from Edinbane village which has a pub and restaurant featured in the Michelin guide. Portree the islands biggest town is 11 miles away with a selection of pubs and restaurants.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

Our house is suitable for those who enjoy peace and the natural world. Our croft land is steep so requires fitness. Wellies and wet weather gear are advisable. A car is necessary as it is an 11 mile drive to the nearest shop, town, cinema and leisure centre with pool. We expect our home to be treated with care and left as you find it.

Can I bring my own pets?

No, sorry.

Christmas in Skye

Many thanks to Liz & Nigel for the opportunity to look after the flock and your home on the Isle of Skye. We really enjoyed your home with the views over the loch, we quickly settled into the feeding and watering routine, our rewards were beautiful fresh eggs, your large kitchen was ideal for producing cakes and delights fresh custard, pavlova & chocolate cakes! Think we have had put on a couple of pounds, had we not enjoyed all the walking and fresh air Skye has to offer. It really was a winter wonderland, nice to come home and sit by the log burner in the evening. Thanks for your detailed instruction booklet and your warm hospitality which gave us a great house sitting start to 2024. Many thanks Alan & Lorraine

Two wonderful weeks on Skye

Location, location, location!! Liz & Nigel's house overlooks the lovely Greshornish peninsula, so you wake to wonderful views even when the hills are shrouded in mist. We received a warm welcome, tasty meal & excellent instructions on how to care for the 2 pigs, 7 ducks & 14 hens. It was easy to get into the routine of feeding & cleaning out the animals which was not too onerous so we had plenty of time for exploring the island. Plus we got the benefit of fresh eggs. The house is very comfortable, warm & tidy. Would definitely recommend this house sit & would welcome the opportunity to go back.

Hen nights on Skye!

The owners of the property and animals are very polite kind clean and methodical. I am impressed with their efficient ways and reliability. There was sufficient communication before and during the assignment which is in a stunning location with minimum light pollution so there is an additional bonus to witness the northern lights if you’re lucky. The animals are very entertaining and a pleasure to care for them. I have no reservations in recommending the animals the property and location and the owners too. Should you be fortunate enough to be able to care for the animals here I highly recommend you research your travel options and discuss day to day commitments with the owners in detail as some people may find this too isolating which I enjoyed. It really is an unusual experience I’ll never forget...thank you!

Liz and Nigel are friendly, kind homeowners who invited us to their home on Skye, Scotland to look after the animals while they went on holiday for two weeks. On arrival we were pleasantly greeted and introduced to all the animals in our care, then given a lovely home cooked meal. Their home is large but easily cared for and a full instruction kit was available. We enjoyed the animals and our time on Skye and had no problems with any of them at all. Being travellers we didn't have appropriate wet weather gear to fully appreciate the many wonderful walks available, but made the most of the fine days to get out and about. We can definitely recommend a stay at Liz and Nigel's........Skye has some wonderful landscapes and a beauty all of its own. King and Linda, New Zealand

Beautiful house and location; Well organised animal feed and care.

We sat for Liz and Nigel in their very comfortable B&B on Skye for two weeks and looked after their cat, chickens, ducks and three pigs. Very clear feed/care instructions were provided and Nigel took us through the routines before leaving us to it. All very straightforward. Liz kept in touch via email throughout our stay. There is plenty of time between morning and late afternoon feeds to go out walking..and lots of maps and guidebooks in the sunroom to help plan activities. It was a pleasure to meet Liz and Nigel...and the animals!..which we really enjoyed looking after.

Lovely Bed and Breakfast, Stunning Views!

I had the absolute pleasure to care for hens, ducks, pigs and lovely cat and fabulous vegetable gardens on the incredible Isle of Sky for Liz and Nigel whilst they were away on holiday. They fetched me from town, fed me like a guest or loving family member, and didn't want me taking in any guests. There are stunning views, fantastic sitting room w fireplace, and watch the Northern Lights dancing on the water right in front of you! Strathearn B n B located in Edinbane. I will be back, next time as a guest!!! Go on Holiday, you'll love it there!
