Due to unforeseen circumstances we are urgently looking for a reliable couple or friends to house sit for approximately 4 months from 20th December. If this is not possible before Christmas we will try and amend our travel plans to 28th December or early January. Maybe you will be digital nomads or people who like getting away from it all. This is not suitable for house-sitters who have children or would like to bring their pets with them.
I will contact you all personally to discuss the house sit further or to advise you that we have found suitable house-sitters.
There is one cat to care for, Grace, who lives inside and does not go out that much. She likes to sit on laps! There are also many village cats to feed outside. There will be some watering required for pots and little pool maintenance.
Our house, an old large farmhouse, is located in rural Andalucia in the province of Granada, with mountain views all around. We will provide an insured car for you to use whilst you are here. All you will need to pay for is fuel and any road fines. There is wifi.
The farm house is on the edge of the village of Venta Micena, ten kilometres from the historic town of Orce in north-eastern Granada. The town of Orce has a Moorish castle and a fascinating museum, plus a beautiful old church, and there are shops, banks, bars and restaurants, as well as a weekly market. There are good quality reasonably priced restaurants where a menu del dia is 10 euro per head including all courses, drinks and coffee. It is also well worth sitting in the bar in the square sampling the free tapas with a few drinks and watching the world go by. Orce has a natural free swimming pool, spring fed. There are many villages to explore and the mountain town of Castril has a dramatic gorge which you can walk through on an elevated wooden platform. Twelve kilometres in the other direction is the unspoilt wilderness of the natural park of the Sierra de Maria. This is a dramatic landscape of forests and mountains, which rise to a height of over 2000 metres. There are numerous tracks and pathways where you can walk for miles with little likelihood of meeting other people. Twenty minutes drive away is the regional centre of Huescar, another historic town with a greater range of shops , busy restaurants and bars. This is an ideal place to sit outside a street cafe and watch the world go by, or relax in one of the many bars where free tapas are served with every drink. A bustling market every Thursday fills the streets and squares and is a great place to soak up the atmosphere of real Spain. To the north is the vast natural park of the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas, another region of forests and mountains, famed for its wildlife. Between Huescar and the park is the highest mountain of the area, La Sagra and there are signed footpaths to the top, should you have the energy. A drive in any direction will take you through stunning scenery and you will encounter little other traffic. Nature lovers should be in their element, with endless opportunities for exploring the wilderness. Less than half an hour away from the house is the dramatically sited castle at Velez Blanco has splendid views, and all the towns in the region offer street cafes and bars to sit and watch the world go by.
Please note this house sit is for approximately 4 months so you should ensure you are able to comply with the Schengen visa rules.
We prefer house-sitters who use Whatsapp or another instant smartphone messaging service as it makes communication very easy once the house sit has commenced.
This is a rural location away from it all with a very small population. It will be winter and cold outside at night as the house is at 3000ft. Days are often sunny, but there may be some rain or even a little snow.
Average daily maximum temperatures are: December 10 degrees, January 10 degrees, February 13 degrees, March 17 degrees and April 20 degrees.
The house is comfortable and restored but it is not flick of the switch heating and you will need to use a chain saw on the logs and prepare kindling for fuel. In the kitchen is a wood burning range which heats all of the downstairs including a bathroom. There is also a small wood burner in the sitting room for colder days and evenings. Upstairs is NOT heated but there is one double bedroom where the room is heated by a vent from the fire in the sitting room.
Hot water is heated by an electric immersion heater.
I stayed at David's and Simon's house in Andalusia and it could not possibly have been any better: - Both David and Simon and very friendly, nice, helpful and generous. They allowed me to arrive two days early, so the cat and me could get acquainted with each other. - They gave very clear instructions, had bought all the cat food for the duration of the house sit, and whenever there was a question, they were always available online. - Grace, the cat, already has house sitting experience and she warmed to me quickly. From the second day, she was sitting on my lap every day. She is a very relaxed cat. - The area of Venta Micena is beautiful for walking and hiking. You won't meet many people, but you can walk for hours in all directions, explore old farmhouses and caves or climb mountains. The view from the house towards the Sierra de María always gave me a feeling of being in a Western movie set in Montana. I really had a wonderful time there, and I thank David and Simon for the opportunity!
David and Simon were an absolute pleasure to sit for. Communication was quick and clear from the start, making it easy to organise coming from Australia to Spain to begin looking after their home. We quickly became friends with Grace the indoor cat, and having the outside cats around makes for great daily entertainment as well! David's instructions were clear, easy to follow, and he responded to any questions within minutes, despite being in a completely different time zone. The house is very comfortable with great internet. It was warm through the winter, and the location is within easy drive of beautiful mountainous nature or the coastline. We would 100% recommend these owners and their home, should an opportunity arise to take care of it for them.
I highly recommend a housesit at Cortijo Romero. Grace the kitty is just the sweetest little lovely, the home is without issue and comfortable, the wood for the fire if you are coming for a winter stay, is dry and easy to access, and the area is just fantastic for walks and cave exploring. There is no shortage of pleasurable day excursions as well. On my first night I was hit with a serious wind storm which knocked down the chimney. David was quick to respond and quickly had a repair person out to rectify the situation. Feeding the village wild cats was a pleasure, although their situation sad - despite the kindness and care provided by David and his partner. I have only very good things to say to my generous hosts. Thank you to you both for a wonderful stay in your home.
Our three months long stay at David and Simon's house was a fantastic experience we can't recommend enough! They are friendly, funny and down to earth guys whom we truly consider to be friends now. They clearly communicated their expectations (which weren't a lot) before they left and were always available when we had questions during their absence. Our main responsibilities were Grace, an indoor cat, who is very affectionate and playful as well as about 30 outdoor cats who needed nothing besides food and water. We'd housesit again for David and Simon in a heartbeat!
